Tatum never ceases to amaze me. His playing, his imagination, his ideas are just incredible. That touch, the lack of pedal, his harmonic skill, just beautiful. I think the best word to describe his playing is.....WOW!
There is a story of a man playing in a club. Suddenly a portly man walked in and bumped through the tables towards the piano. AS soon as the man playing noticed this he stood up and said "Ladies and Gentlemen I am simply a piano player, but a god has just entered the room." Thus is the story of Art Tatum widely considered the best jazz piano player of all time.
Truly magnificent. Listening to any solo of Art Tatum's is kind of like listening to Liszt and Debussy collaborate with Fats Waller and George Gershwin. The effect is so special and powerful. I think the only other Jazz pianists comparable to Tatum's virtuosity and technique would be James P. Johnson, Teddy Wilson, and of course Oscar Peterson.
Those right hand runs tend to steal the glory but listen to that left hand shift between stride, walking tenths, counter-melodies and then pauses before putting the finishing touch on an some impossible run by the right hand. He never misses a beat, he never makes a mistake and never plays it safe. Endlessly enjoyable!
To jamesedwardtheobald. Love it when he starts to swing at about 2:50. One measure of his musical genius is, for me, that like great artists (think impressionists!) he suggests more than he actually does. Somehow your brain fills in the gaps. How does he get that much rhythm from so little? Dates from an age when pianist often had to play solo. Work on that.
What's especially amazing about Art is that he was experimenting with these kinds of sophisticated harmonic concepts 20 years before the Bebop guys took them into the mainstream. In fact, he's where a lot of them (e.g. Charlie Parker) got the ideas. Say what you will about his flamboyant style—he was tremendously influential.
A little gem from the golden age of songwriting. Frequent key changes make this particularly challenging for improvisation. Try it! Didn't bother Tatum - but then what did?
@transitmen i just get lost playing over the chords on this piece, it's super fun. i've spent hours this week just getting lost in improvising on this piece. and 'darn that dream', which has interesting voicings between the chords and the melody. i trip on how 'modern' some of these older pieces sound...
oh come on. they are diffrent, art tatum is a solist, who plays maybe more "piano" than Peterson, but Peterson is like the king of phrasing, when it´s about to swing with (or without) the band.
Damn these hands of mine that cannot play the piano like this! Oh well, at least we have great writers and of course, pianists like Art Tatum to supplement. Thanks for this awesome upload!
heres a perfect example of what a genius might be

@Hyperclefonical598 Ahem, uhhh, Phineas Newborn jr. end of story ... you might do well to add in Previn as well, of course.
Tatum is excellent, but I find his playing to be too excellent sometimes

..the terms "matchless perfection" are almost sufficient for Tatum....
