I have a Point of Sale software and the credit card stuff isn't connected to the software. When someone pay you with credit card, you use those stand alone credit card device to make the transaction. On the software, you press credit payment instead of cash. That's it. Really simple and safe. So there is no need for PCI compliance.
To those of you about to purchase a point of sale system. Make sure it is Visa approved for PCI compliance. It's on the Visa web site, also search for the PCI-DSS, can also be found through wikipeida.
A data breach will ether put you out of business, or make you wish you were out of business. Listen to what happened to a restauranteur. Search for "PCI Risk" on Youtube. Parts 1 and 2
