1) Why was it still regarded as world reserve currency and accepted by the Canadian government as payment for goods and services.

Didnt Germany commit acts of espionage against the United States? Didnt they send operatives to sabotage factories, set fire to them, destroy them? Didnt their submarines sink commercial and civillian boats? Didnt Germany itself warned American citizens that travelling on the high seas would be at their own peril? First of all supplying weapons to the Allies was already an act of war from Germany's perspective, and the Roebling factory's sabotage was never even proven to be Germany's doing.
"Neutral" ships were used to transport weaponry to the Allies, so Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare was entirely justified, especially after the naval blockade that killed hundreds of thousands of German civilians. The fact that Germany warned people to not enter the war zone was somehow bad?

We went in because of the Lusitania being shot at and sunk. The U.S. knew the U.K. and neighboring waters were surrounded by the Germans and they still let the ship go. They wanted an excuse to go into the war. Get out of your conventional wisdom, it's not healthy and not true.
