This is a great performance. I wish I could have seen the band play, or caught a reading. Thank God for youtube, right? Rest in Peace, Jim. You're my favorite.
Thanks for sharing this. I, too, bought this album as a highschool kid when it was new and it really knocked my head for a loop. Picked up a lot of my guitar playing style from it!
I saw you guys at the Reseda Country Club in 1983 or '84, if memory serves. You guys killed it. Absolutely fucking killed. Was my pleasure and a show I'll never forget.
Steve, I will never forget seeing Jim over the years in San Francisco. I feel so very fortunate to have heard him read at the Mabuhay Gardens and sing at the Stone, where I worked nights. I sold your records by day at Rainbow Records, and still proudly show my autographed t shirt every chance I get! Thanks for posting these awesome videos. I hope Jim knew the impact he had on my generation.
This album had such an impact on me, that it remains one of my favorite albums of all time. The albums that came out 'after' Catholic Boy were still ok, but without the awesome guitar work of your brother, it became very clear that one of the 2 vital parts was missing.
I did see the band a couple times during Dry Dreams and once during I Write Your Name. They are imbedded in my 50 yr old brain.
Thank you for posting this. It was an incredible time period for a brief moment.
If this was the New Year's Eve show at the On Broadway, I was there too. I've missed a lot through the years, but, motherfucker, I DIDN'T MISS THIS! The meaning of the word "epic" pales in comparison with this show.
Another druggie-induced performer I used to follow in my post-adolescence...then went down the road again with the Dead before the '84 New Americana punk scene got me back on the alternative track (Husker Du, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Black Flag)
amazing man! This man and your band Changed my life.I am now the first rock "artist" to sign in china.I actually wanna play something off Catholic Boy at the great wall in august! Thanks for this video man! AMAZING SOUL

Great video. I got to see the original band at their gig in Hartford shortly after "Catholic Boy" was released. My recollection is that it was a small crowd in a big club and they put the band on a secondary stage in the back.
Also had a brief chat with Jim at a reading he gave in Cambridge, MA around 1992. There were some distractions going on at the moment and he was very gracious.

@silverandlight I was in Jersey, dealing with the passing of my Mother and her estate. I live in New Mexico now..The radio was blasting, "People who Died" and they announced by the "Late" Jim Carroll..My heart stopped...He was my friend...so long ago..seems like yesterday. I should have stayed in touch..Just a train ride from Jersey... I can make my own excuses sound new..H..

Thanks to all the JCB and JC Fans for your comments. I just returned from burying Jim in NY and am pleased to share with you that he is resting in a beautiful old cemetary on the upper Hudson. The cliffs of the palisades above his head and the sweet old Hudson, flowing on it's way to the infamous "C rock" where Jim jumped as a kid, flowing past his feet. It's a truly beautiful resting place.
@silverandlight I only two days ago read of Jim's death. I don't know how that news slipped under my radar, especially as many who know me knew of J.C.'s significance in my own, former musical career.
I wrote a parody (a la Weird Al, about the time Yankovic himself was beginning his career) of "People Who Died" sometime in 1981. It was humorous, although dead-on (pun not intended now, although maybe then). I won't get into details here, in a public forum, will send you a private message.
@silverandlight Suffice to say, I saw you guys twice on the "Catholic Boy" tour (though cannot recall the venue of the first gig, only the second--maybe you can refresh my failing memory?), met Jim briefly, complimented him on the "Sweet Jane" cover, which was then refreshing, as had not yet been covered by any Cowboy Junkies. He just quietly said "Thanks," and smiled. I was too drunk and/or in awe to say anything more comprehensive.
@silverandlight I read "Basketball Diaries" (twice) after its re-release in 1979, wish so much another "lost angel" (River Phoenix) had lived to play Jim's role in the film. But at least Leo's stardom and talents helped expose a younger generation to J.C's music and writings.
@silverandlight I'm bummed out about Jim's passing, had really hoped to hear & see The J.C. Band play again one day, give Jim a copy of my cover/parody in person, really chat with him, now that I have wrestled my own demons and have some perspective.
Jim's passing may be old news by now, for most who knew him or of him. But to me it's fresh and very sad, having discovered it so much after the fact. Look for a p.m. from me in your Tube in-bin. Take care and take cover--Another "Jim."
This is friggin awesome, I saw the Jim Carroll band about 1980 in virginia beach, va at the peppermint beach club, great show! RIP JC, and thanks for the great tunes
looks like the Fab Mab SF. Always considered him bookends to Patti Smith. somewhere is a pic of him kissing my dead girlfriend. Guess they will reminisce.
I was just watchign the Fridays footage and remembering how sharp this band was. I really really loved those records. thanks for posting this & RIP to Jim Carroll.
R.I.P. Jim Carroll... didn't know your music well.. but in 1978-1980.. the punk and new wave explosion was strong on New York radio and "People Who've Died" was in regular rotation on WPLJ of all places. Jim I Mourn You More Than Aaaaaallllll the Others... I Saluuuuute You My Bruuuthhhaaaaaaaa!

Lyrics, lyrics, lyrics. I miss music with words that make statements.
Look up Jim's "Day and Night" Miss his words and spirit.
