  • I thought that playing a piece really fast doesn't necessarily make you good - in fact, it has an opposite effect to it. Is that correct?

  • All hell breaks loose at 0:39

  • I think Rod has a fast piano

  • Cool :)

  • Scott Joplin is probably turning in his grave. This is played much too fast and is really enjoyable at that tempo. Joplin specifically said that his rags should not be played fast. Tempo de Marcia.

  • @mediaguardian Yeah, but ragtime is so much fun to play fast! Plus, if you listen carefully, Rod really simplified the piece so all the notes didn't get convoluted like they would have had the actual piece, as Joplin wrote it, been played this fast.

  • @mediaguardian yeah, but it's not like people at Disney are gonna critique him. They're gonna want to see stuff that seems more talented than sounds good. Disney is always trying to be better and faster, etc. So they probably want anyone working there to do the same

  • @krusie0 I don't want to think about it lol

  • That's some crazy awesome muscle memory right there!!

  • That's good quality for 1993!

  • Massive boner.

  • This man is a boss if I ever saw one.

  • すごい楽しそうに弾いてるね。

    ディズニー行ったらこの人見にいこ♪

  • look how happy that guy is doing what he loves!

  • wow!! fantastic!!

  • Bear Grylls should use Rod Miller's hands for fire starters because he set that piano alight!

  • My facial expression O.O oh my! Fantastic job!!!!

  • This guy must be so thrilled to bring people back to that era - I would be.

  • Maple leaf Rag of ScottJoplin

  • Love the tempo he plays at, I don't care if ragtime is supposed to be played slower, for me the faster the better!

  • God, I miss Rod Miller. His version of this song on the "Music of Disney World and EPCOT Center" album from 1988, was one of the things that made me start taking piano lessons when I was little.

  • showoff :3

  • I'm surprised his fingers didn't get knotted up like they do in those old Bugs Bunny cartoons.

  • Play me off, Johnny!

  • @Annaie123 Ah a good family guy joke! :) Thank you sir.

  • @krusie0 No such thing as a good Family Guy joke.

  • @Supermassively Blasphemy!!! You could be burned at the cross for saying such things Heretic! J/K

  • ....from a piano player that made a good livin as a kid for seven years playing Ragtime........this man is THE BEST ragtime pianist in my time....in my opinion.

  • unreal

  • Rod was the best. He was perfect for the job. Disneyland has not been the same since he stopped working there. His playing of Maple Leaf was a signature piece for him. For anyone that states, "you're not supposed to play it this way" the correct reply is "YOU are not supposed to play it this way, if that's what you want. Rod and anyone else can play it any way they want." That's the great thing about great music, it stands up to different interpretations. This version is perfect.

  • I can almost hear Scott Joplin in his grave screaming: "STOP PLAYING MY MUSIC SO FAST!"

  • Rod Miller, sadly, has retired from piano playing. Ragtime players at Coke Corner today are not Rod Miller, but they're still really good.

  • he's actually ruining the piece, i think. It may have a good bit of speed, but this is just too much. I don't like it.

  • now THAT....is what i call talent

  • I would pay so much money for him to teach me piano!

  • mind=blown

  • great job man man man!!!!

  • 52 PEOPLE NEED A PIANO THROWN AT THEIR HEAD

  • Hi, my name is Rod and I wanne be a plumber

  • @rudisme you wanna work with poop?

  • What would the sheet music look like...

  • @krusie0 It sounds like his own rendition of the piece, so, probably, INSANE.

  • @krusie0 Maple Leaf Rag is available online, and I don't think it looks too complicated. Miller takes the tempo to the extreme though, which is why it sounds so epic.

  • lol I clapped at the end of the video.. bravo

  • um he plays that song to fast your not supposed to play it so fast but he is talented

  • @crazymanma123 You're supposed to spell properly and use proper grammar and punctuation. You can play it as fast as you want. There is no "Limit".

  • @GamingXen I really don't care about stupid grammar and punctuation and you can play as fast as you want but it wasn't written to be played as fast as you want it was written with a reasonable speed of one note = 144-160 not like 258

  • @crazymanma123 that's the thing about ragtime, upping the tempo makes it sound awesome.

  • shoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot

  • ojala algun dia pueda conocerlo!! no words.

  • i don t understand why i hear about this man only at 18 years old...

  • i am jealous

  • Holy shit......

  • I get why he's playing it like that, and he plays it very accurately considering the tempo, but it just sounds horrible.

  • @Harmonyww

he's just trying to amaze the people

  • I don't understand those criticizing the tempo in view of the setting (not a recital hall) and the fact that Rod Miller's job is to awe and entertain the visitors/children. The people who gathered around to listen are most likely not looking for pristine interpretation that touches the soul. I assure you, Rod Miller is capable of that--it's just not the proper setting. Plus, this is all improv. IMHO, our mindset toward music shouldn't be so rigid--enjoy and have fun, don't be quick to judge.

  • wish Rod Miller were still there...

  • This is really really impressive, and awesome!!! but, Scott Joplin himself would've probably hated it! He put side notes on his sheet music and even on the front covers of his Rags specifically stating that the rags were not to be played too fast, or they would be ruined!

  • @TheHeater90 That's more like a recommendation rather than a "law." Joplin would have been rather incredibly amazed by this, considering he wasn't able to play *this* well on his own. But if you notice this isn't exactly the original composition, it's adjusted specifically for the tempo.

  • @FrosDOwnz No, I noticed that, and I myself was amazed by this guy, as I said before, "really, really impressive"! But Joplin himself said, "Ragtime is never to be played fast", he was very specific about this, because even in his day there were a lot of people playing his compositions really fast and he felt that they were ruining them! These are not my words but his! I'm sure he would've found this just as impressive as we do, but he would have probably also felt it was just too fast!

  • @TheHeater90 I understand what you're saying. No song should be played too fast, really. The truth is, playing the piano is all about soul. All about the nuance, dynamics and technical efficiency. It is not about speed/tempo.

  • @TheHeater90 Only about tempo in the sense that are you sticking with the specified tempo using a metronome or some other method.

  • すごいテクニックなのにすごい楽しそうに弾いてる~(^ ^)

    こっちまで楽しくなってきちゃいます♪♪

  • I was there

  • i would LOVE to hear him play "flight of the bumblebee" !!

  • Comment removed

  • "daniel, hi! how ya doing?" Don't mind me, I'm not playing a piano to awesome music at amazing speed or anything. This weathers nice right?

  • is he dead?

  • @Akleptose no hes just retired

  • im sorry but who the fuck would NOT like this!!!!???? this is amazing beyond belief!! mostly because i suck at piano

  • Holy..... Shit

  • @crazydrummer2012 i think we all feel the same way

  • u rock!!

  • This guy got some really good jiggly fingers. I play piano to but he is really fast

  • LOL! Love the lil eyebrow move at 0.11!

  • HOLY FUK CHRIST GEEZUS as ray william johnson would of said

  • Wow! hes fast! he is a pretty good pianist!

  • Why is it that all that matters to white people is how fast you can play something; its like trying to get sex done with as quick as possible - and to black people it's how much feel you have.

  • @MrSmackdab People like you bug me. I can't even express your stupidity :P

  • @Kylie66100 Why is it I bug you? What is stupid about my remark?

  • @MrSmackdab can we not get over color of skin? theres over 9 billion people on this planet. Nothing is just one way or the other.

  • @Kylie66100 6.2 billion....just sayin lol

  • Why is it that all that matters to white people is how fast you can play something; its like trying to get sex with as quick as possible - and to black people it's how much feel you have.

  • he doesn't even seem totally focused and he played it with no hitches

  • @MetroidMilkMan lol I was thinking that 2. It's sad

  • i like how at 1:33 someone tries to start a clapping beat, and no one joins in so they stop after a few claps hahaha

  • "Daniel!"

    "Hey!

    "How've you doing?"

    haha!

  • Fast... but hidieously awful.

  • I went to disneyland when i was a kid and saw him play, 20 years later i took my own kids there and there he was and i said to my kids "this guys the reason i started playing"

  • Bravo Rod !!!

  • this is defintely not sped up..he is called the man with flying fingers..too bad hes not there anymore..its funny that he has time to look up and raisse his eyebrows..easily one of the best piano players

  • This guy is happy

  • Meh

  • Love Piano and think this is one of the better videos of this song on here

HOpe to one day play that piece in a year or so

  • i feel sry for the piano .. lol

  • It's not sped up! Look at the people in the back!!!! Good job Rod!!!! ;)

  • Scott Joplin would be pissed if he saw him play that fast!

  • I love watching Rod Miller play. Always with a big smile on his face and smoke coming out of the piano! lol

  • Ahh yes, Rod Miller, no one does it better.

  • What is it with folk having a go at this vid? It's not some fake vid of a ufo or somesome pretending to solve the rubiks cube by playing a film backwards.

Just like the uploader says its vhs and converted so may wobble a bit, however folk in the background are steady and the tonality is in tune (if not al little usa sharp :-)

He has a style thats lets him play at that speed and his own interpertation, ie he misses some notes out.

This performance rocks. Pure talent. It deserves respect.

  • @bonesstorage well said... if anyone can play at that speed and hold conversations with people, it's simply out of this world

  • @metabolife yea i totally agree,,,,, holy shit not only that he also doesn't look at the key sometimes

  • What a lot of people don't know is... he was paid by the note, not by hour.....ha jk

  • Definitely a legend. I feel bad that his physical mobility has declined, but he still has his chops! I was in for a treat when I saw him visiting with Alan Thompson, Jr. playing this past Saturday

  • It's not sped up, he can really play that fast. The man was a machine!!!!!!!!

  • I remember him, when I visit Disneyland in early 90's, he was there, I met him in the swimming pool, he go to swim almost every night, live close to Cerritos , CA.

Met him in grocery store 2 years ago said he retired already ..I hope he is doing well now!

  • He was that fast.

  • Shkuzzle my nuzzle!

  • lol...screw all the ppl who say this is speeded up. it isn't or the voices of ppl wud be in a higher tone and the head movements wud be kinda pathethic(even if only slightly speed up).

This guy is awesome. He doesn't only play the piano freakin well, he also seems an embodiment of the disney spirit. I don't know if he's faking it or something but the truth is that he's happy playing there, he's happy amusing ppl with his plays and he is always showing a smile to everyone :)

  • @RPtubezone2 "speeded". lol

  • I wonder how much he makes an hour.

  • Where can I get this arrangement?

  • Rod miller eally did play like this. He was mad fast at the keys. I got to see him play back in the 80's he was amazing. Rain wind or shine he was there on coke corner. What makes it even cooler is that he had a fused spine and was still able to sit at the keys for all those years.

  • this is real I have been to coke corner in DL and the guy really played like that.

  • OH MY GOD!! so fast!! this guy is crazy!! : )

  • My dad and husband both worked at DLand and we saw this wonderful, friendly and talented guy alot. He never got tired of Joplin requests!

  • Is this a human being?

  • this is not sped up, many people seen this man play, including me.

  • @Hairyhole1 You guys should just watch the ppl in the background. Even if its speed up a bit, its because of the old way it got recorded. The ppl in the background move in normal speed, so if its speed up, only a few percent.

  • this is REAL , if u look at the walking people on the background , the peoples are walking NORMAL ;D and this guy is AMAZING SO FAST xD

  • Every time I watch this,Rod simply amazes me.He's the best.

  • Flawless Victory.

  • Pfft....i can totally play that :P

  • God, he's like the legend of ragtime.

  • Lol, this guy is pure class. He reminds me of those old 30s movies. Or a saloon player (on steroids!). Great stuff.

  • There are a ridiculous amount of indicators that tell you its not sped up, some easy ones being: him talking, piano notes at correct pitch, people moving in background normally. Awesome playing too.

  • dizzxy-land, the crappiest place on erth!

  • I can tell that this was NOT sped up,

  • This is amazing. This is not sped up at all this is pure talent. Also the people behind him are walking normal too.

  • Well...............that was crap!

  • This is not sped up this is how Rod played, I have grown up watching him at Disneyland. People can play fast, I've seen it over and over.

  • This is not sped up. If you have seen him play in person then you would know.

  • Hey, please check out my version of Maple Leaf Rag and tell me what you think :D Please thumbs up if you think it was okay ;)

Anyway this guy is a technique machine... really...

  • Dayumn that's awesome

  • Are you kidding me? THIS VIDEO DOESNT EVEN LOOK SPED UP! If you pay attention, the people in the background are walking at a normal pace! Not fast! And its normal that the camera is shaking i mean jeez have u even held a camera before? Listen, hes even speaking normally.

....sorry it just makes me a little irritated when people start an argument about something thats not true.

  • @sdfanforeverX3 and it makes me very irritated when people don't liste to what I fucking say. god fucking damn it! I didn't kow it was possible for so many people to he this stupid!

  • @danieldoscher Dude, I only meant that Rod is very dear to many of us who saw him over the years, and that his playing is amazing. I didn't mean to offend you personally. I really don't care if it's sped up or not, and I don't think that everyone who replies to you post is stupid; I agree with sdfanforeverX3, it makes me irritated that someone with your obviously limited vocabulary, based on your vulgar posts, is even insulting people about a ragtime piano player that many of us admire!

  • @cogdesign You say I have a limited vocabulary, yet you use a lower range of words than I do. just because you don't like words doesn't mean they take away from the number of words I know. You know what really irritates me though, is when you reply to me without reading what I said. Is it just me or would only a stupid person do that?

  • @danieldoscher Dan, I just don't appreciate the types of words you use in your insults to people you don't even know. If you actually read what I said, as was also corroborated by the person who took the video, A, it wasn't sped up, and B, all I said is that he is capable of playing amazingly fast, almost beyond belief, and my whole point is why are you even trying to prove it was sped up? I'm sorry if I misunderstood your post.

  • @cogdesign again, I fucking said SLIGHTLY and by a fuckginG ACCIDENT ACIDENTALLY SPED UP SLIGHTLY NOT ON PURPOSE BUT BY ACCIDENT is that getting though to you? how about the part where i say TO ME IN MY FUCKING OPINION? You're obviously not illiterate because you're typing to me. So, what's your problem?

  • @danieldoscher Dan, you're entitled to your opinion. I have no problem with you and you obviously misunderstood MY post. I do feel sorry for you that you are filled with so much anger that you are ready to jump down people's throats, and end up with a negative interaction instead of a positive interaction with people who obviously appreciate the SAME video, since we're all viewing it. I already apologized if I misunderstood your post, what's YOUR problem?

  • Comment removed

  • @TheMunkRocker OK, got it. yes, it was on a vhs tape, filmed in 1993, before memory/dvd cameras. Maybe sped up, but he still plays very fast in person.

  • @harborhouse55 I know he does. I wasn't saying he doesn't play that fast. XD I know it sounded that way, and I probably shouldn't have gotten that upset. but it just pisses me off when people take what I say the wrong way. lol

  • @TheMunkRocker You can tell it's not speed up because when he's talking, he sounds normal.

  • @TheMrkevin1995 Fuck you. if you're to stupid toknow what I said, I have no business talking to you.

  • @TheMunkRocker Yet you replied to me.

  • @TheMrkevin1995 Yes .just to tell you that you're stupid and obviously can't read someone's entire comment before you reply to it. Also what the fuck does it matter what I think? it is looks TO ME like it's sped up by a fucking accident, why the do you care?

  • @TheMunkRocker okay, I admit. I was being idiotic. I misread most parts, and didn't pay attention to some parts of what you were saying.

  • @TheMunkRocker It cant be sped up. listen to him talk at like 0:47 ... if it was sped up he'd be uncomprehendable. also look at the people around him, they arent moving around veraciously are they?

  • @TheMunkRocker

you must be an idiot to think this is sped up, so many things show that it isnt.

People walking the background. Him talking during the video and the people sitting down watching Rod play. The clapping and the YEAH at the end.

I'm all the way from Australia and have been to Disneyland and seen him play this and its exactly the same speed

  • @TheMunkRocker Look at Rod Millers other videos, he plays as fast on every video. If you google him, you'd know he mastered fast playing practicing 6 hours a day 5 days a week..

  • @Iztorml keywords "to me" "by accident" "not on purpose" "slightly" "unintentional" "like a cassette tape being played with the wrong settings" read what I fucking said, stupid.

  • @TheMunkRocker

listen to him talk around the middle of the video. he says "how ya doin" his voice sounds normal......

  • @ScubzMcTalBowling god you're so stupid. READ WHAT i FUCKING SAID!!!!!!!!!!

  • @TheMunkRocker

no reason to be mean. does your father beat you?

  • @ScubzMcTalBowling actually I went into fostercare because he did. but that's none of your business. =P and yes, there is a need to be rude. I've said like a thousand times it LOOKS sped up SLIGHTLY and ON ACCIDENT and TO ME IN MY OPINION. it looks TOO ME like it's sped up SLIGHTLY like a VCR tape showing normal ware. =P god why does everyone fucking care what I think? =P

  • @ScubzMcTalBowling also u can see at 0:20 a girl in the background that walks normally

  • crazily long fingers

  • oh my god, he truly rocks! :D

I wasn't able to stay still when I heard him playing. lol

  • this guys amazing his forearms must be burning man.

    exellent 5/5

  • his hands are like crazy coked out spiders

  • For the people who think it's speed up type this in the bar above:

Rod Miller Disneyland Ragtime Piano Player - Maple Leaf Rag

  • I wouldn't mind going to Disneyland just to hear this fellow in person!!
