  • Here's another Haiku:

    Your husband's a pig

Your hands are fine as they are

    Kill him in his sleep

  • She also did ads in Spanish for Palmolive.

  • this WHOLE time i've been saying palmolive like one word.. -_____- didn't realize it was palm-olive >.<

  • Madge is still hot.

  • I'm always trying to get my family to buy a dishwasher. But I got used to washing dishes in boiling hot water working in deli/bakerys. You wash dishes by hand there.

  • So it seems Madge was out of a job, once her customers started "soaking in it"!

  • Madge is such a bitch.

  • I LOVED Madge! Love Margo Martindale from these childhood memories all the way to Dexter, Justified, Secretariat, you NAME IT, she RULES!!!!

  • Madge fuckin runs the dish soap game.

  • Back then - Cheap husbands wouldn't buy their wives automatic dishwashers

  • @lightsofrose Also people thought (and some people still do) that "THEIR way of washing dishes uses less water and is more effective", neither of which is true. (Electric dishwashers use less water - unless one washes all the dishes in a bucket of hand-hot water, and the water in dishwashers is FAR hotter than a hand can stand.)

  • Seven people are still soaking in it

  • Madge really became a manicurist because of what happened to her in 'Nam.

  • Unfortunately, I still have dishpan hands...

  • Your not the only one who feels old I still remeber madge

  • a haiku for palmolive::

    "olive and palm"

    pretty green wonder

softens hands while you clean plates

    you're soaking in it...

    ::thank you

  • This commercial was edited very well that is why Madge is so appealing and trustworthy.

  • Palmolive vs Timotei anyone?

  • who came to this commercial cuz the guy from the 2nd gretest lick told u to?

  • @nerfplayboy12345 me i didnt hear shit

  • .....Would have been much better if she was soaking her hand in DIARRHEA instead of Palmolive. :-)

  • Ooh Madge!

  • "from the first glass to the last greasy casserole"!! man, thats funny as hell

  • wow..."thirst for power" LOL!!

  • Say, does anyone have a video of this Palmolive commercial from the 50's or 60's, because my mom was talking about it and I wanted to see it: The one where a mother and daughter are washing dishes together with Palmolive, and when they finished, the camera close-ups on their hands and a voice says "Who has younger-looking hands?"

  • There's a lot of passive aggressive rage in that Marge.

  • In Germany Palmolive comercials had exactly the same plot. Only Madge is called Tilly.

  • They talked differently back then.

  • @flarekary It's called English. In a nail salon nowadays they be speaking Korean.

  • @Hoopermazing LOL. Most nail salons where I live these days are Vietnamese. No sign of Madge.

  • @flarekary - yeah, like they are cultured and educated.

  • "Hu-r-right, Madge", my new catch phrase for smart ass women.

  • Is Madge a lesbian? Or is it my imagination?

  • I remember Madge! You're soaking in it bitch!

  • Fantastic I love this commercial.

  • Whoa. THAT looks and sounds like Frances McDormand!

  • Get that lazy bum husband to do the dishes, missy

  • ohh madge!

  • Try looking at the hairstyles and clothes...this is easily somewhere between about 1967 and 1973.

  • FUCK YOU MADGE, you rotten cheap bitch!!

  • Cool!

  • did anybody ever really soak there hands in palmolive ?

  • Modernize this in a modern nail shop with a Cambodian lady as manicurist. " I no know, I no know . . . try Palmorriv - soffa hand while you do dishes. You soak in it." "Dishwashing liquid? Is it mild?" "Oh, me no know, me no know . . . "

  • @elc1960 OMG that's true...except for most of the ones up here in my area are Korean or Hispanic! I don't think they know the word for "OUCH!!!!" when they are sawing back and forth on your nails.

  • @pagalmasala My friend Carolyn would add the same about eyebrow threading and waxing as well.

  • Every manicurist has a bottle of Palmolive on hand, of course!

  • perhaps the girl should have put less emphasis on the first syllable in "manicurist"..

"Madge... why did you decide to become a MAN...." ???

  • Oh Madge you son of a bitch!

  • @kbrinks

    lmfao.

  • I wonder if Madge ever got bitch slapped by any of her customers for making bitchy comments about her customers hands?

  • Didn't they have electric dish washing machines back then?

  • @MIZIZVOGUE It was a very expensive thing to have.

  • @MIZIZVOGUE Yes, they had dish washing machines but they weren't standard as they are now. Not every home or family had one. They could be convenient but they were bulky and noisier back then and pricey too.

  • Madge is kind of a bitch the way she insults her customers hands.

  • Madge made sure those nails were clean! LOL!

  • Oh, the problems women had back then!

  • Why would someone soak their fingers in any random, unknown liquid?

  • @marky2112 exactly my thoughts, who soaks their hand in thick soap let alone taking it out and someone else stuffs it back in.

  • @1skunkus It's supposed to be something to soften the cuticles.

  • Sounds like Madge smoked

  • Didn't everybody?

  • "you're soaking in it.." When I was a little kid, and I saw this commercial, I thought that woman was a total moron for not knowing her hand was sitting in a bowl of dishwashing liquid.

I didn't know about the whole manicure soaking thing. I just thougth she was an idiot.

  • Madge is awesome

  • She was a Shakespearean actress who knew doing a regular commercial like this was a good steady income.

  • Do you happen to know her real name?

  • "You're soaking in it!"

  • ugg... i feel old

  • i didn't thought that soaps and shampoos of this brand in our country has a dishwashing liquid at states. LOL!

  • I always thought Madge was a gossipy bitch!

  • Lol!

  • "You're soaking in it."

    "In dishwashing liquid?!"

    "No, red fuming nitric acid."

  • Jan Miner was the actress who played Madge. She worked in radio in the late 1940s and 50s. Check out "Radio City Playhouse" online. She died in 2004

  • Palmolive isn't it for the hair?

  • OMG....LOL....

  • "When I see your hands I wish I were a nurse"...LOL...Madge straight clowned. If I went to get a manicure and they put dishsoap anywhere near me I would be getting a refund.

  • palmolive in our country is body soap and shampoo only. no dishwashing liquid

  • Palmolive in this country is for dishwashing only.

  • No they did have body soap in this country by I think it was owned by Colgate.I still see it in the dollar stores.

  • oh madge

  • Comment removed

  • I remember she was still doing this in the early 80s...if Madge is still alive, I wonder if they could get her to do some new commercials...

  • I loved madge!

  • I share your sentiments, but I think her name is Madge.

  • @patchesdf It's marge !

  • the end is fail

  • How long did the woman who played Madge have that gig? Seems like forever.

  • I read on Wikipedia that she played the Madge character for 27 years. Nice gig.

  • 26 years i think (for real)!

  • @40Rtruss hahahaahhahhah..ok i officially peed..

  • @40Rtruss

Phuk me! This is the wittiest thing I've read since I've been reading comments

on you tube. Son, you have a future as a comedy writer!

  • Why was Madge soaking hands in this stuff?

    It doesn't make sense.

    Help me out here.

  • Fingertips are soaked in soapy water during a manicure to soften the fingernail cuticles, so the cuticles can be pushed back and made invisible.

  • Do they still use Palmolive for this? Seems like something would be better.

  • They never use or used Palmolive or any other dishwashing liquid. That's why the ladies in the commercial are always alarmed when told it's a dishwashing liquid.

This is a commercial. It's make-believe. Don't believe stuff you see on commercials. Manicurists do not use Palmolive for their soaking water, that I know of.

  • Why was Marge so loved and thanked when she was acting like a psycho?

  • Sulfuric acid...oh it's more than just mild...hehe. I loved Madge, too. But even when they were current, these ads were parodied for being forced and silly. But...they had impact, people thought about and bought the product...that was the idea.

  • WOW this is the earliest one I have seen YET! How old is this? Mid 60's? AND "SALON EAST" has not changed! They must have kept that set until 1981 or 2, when they doing scenes in the beauty parlor. I met the real "Madge" during high school via letters, and she was too cool. ONLY NOW, with the advent of YouTube am I able to see these pricless ads! THANK you for posting these. ( I actually used to CALL local stations to ask when they were going to air!) So, any idea how old ths is??

  • hmmm...I don't think it's that old...I'd guess the 70's maybe even 80's by the quality of the vid...when did those sink sprayers make an entrace to the world? That would help date this, me thinks...

  • I'm pretty sure this is from the early 70s.

  • Yes, I am going to go with that - often things from the EARLY part of ONE decade resembles things from the LATE portion of the PAST decade (hence the hairstyles - COULD be 1968, OR, say, 1972! Fascinating.

  • @sideshowcarny Agreed, this is 1970s.

  • @sideshowcarny Agreed, this is 1970s. See 3.ly slash EaSF-

  • @sideshowcarny Yeah it may even be the late 60s, but definitely no later than early 70s.

  • @VelvetCyberpunk It was on in the early 70s. Marge, Mr. Whipple and Rosie "Mrs. Morgenstern" the waitress were hallmarks of my youth.

  • @Hoopermazing I know, I was born in 1968 so I remember them all too. The person I was replying to thought this particular commercial was in the mid-late 70s. It wasn't because Madge's hairstyle had changed by them. That is definitely a late 60s early 70s hairstyle.

  • The sink sprayer was in my parents' cabin which was built in 1953! Hee - but given I was a Madge freak during my high school years, the set and look is very familiar to me from that period (late 70's, early 80's). In the later 80's and even 90's, the salon was SEVERELY overhauled, and looked - well, awful. I am going to go with early or mid 70's as a guess for this one - her hairstyle and even Jan's (oh, her name - Jan Miner-) voice are different. Thank you for replying.

  • "Madge I want your body."

    "Harry, get back!"

    "Madge, It's not merely physical!"

    "Harry, You're a Beast!"

  • Madge is a DECEPTIVE bitch for soaking hands in palmolive withoug permission. SUE THE BITCH!

  • These Palmolive Ads remind me of sitting with my Nana in the living room watching The Doctors!

  • do you mean the old soap opera '' the doctors''

  • Is she still alive?? There should be a tribute show to all the spokespersons of products of yesteryear.

  • She passed away several years ago - in the early 90's I think. Her real name was Jan Minor and she acted on Broadway! As a dumb high school kid I was SO into Madge ads (???) and so I painter a mural of her on our school art building wall and she heard and we traded Christmas cards! Odd, but true.

  • hahahahaha agreed

  • Madge the MILF

  • They really should modernize it! But instead of a manicurist it should be a pedicurist.

    Dishpan feet!

  • Madge was a milf. That is all.

  • Try to be forgiving, it was different times, back then everyone was soaking in it!

  • people were warshing there hair with it

  • They should modernize this commercial, but make Marge an old Korean lady.

  • Every manicurist has a bottle of Palmolive at their station.

  • Greasy casserole? YUM

  • good old Madge

  • "Oh Madge..."

  • When I was little I used to give my mother homemade 'manicures' using her Palmolive, just like Madge did at least once a week. She always indulged me and never complained, even though the detergents in that stuff were probably eating away at her skin, lol.

Thanks for putting up with me Mom, and thanks for posting this!

  • This actress also discussed gas hot water heating in the shower. She had a dishwasher at that time. She mentioned it.

  • @totallybarefoot I realize I'm replying to a 2 year old post, but I just had to comment: That was Charlotte Rae (Mrs. Garrett on "Facts Of Life") in that gas heat commercial. It's here on YouTube also. Jan Miner played Madge in the Palmolive commercials. She passed away in 2004.

  • Okay, this really freaks me out.......it seems like yesterday these ads were on TV.

  • hahahah I looooooove it! so funny, one for the ipod haha

  • Madge was always a bit racy - rowr

  • Maybe if she didn't waste all her money on manicures, she could afford to buy a dishwasher.

  • Lol!

  • I used it for bubble baths.

  • It's also very good for clothes on the gentle cycle; I use it instead of Woolite.

  • "you're soaking in it"

    "battery acid"?

  • I always hoped one of her customers would haul off and smack Madge and wash her mouth out with the Palmolive, but it never happened.

  • Madge voice sounds like she should cut down to two packs a day.

  • She lived to be 86, so she must have been doing something right!

  • Madge was awesome in the movie Lenny as Lenny Bruce's mom. Rock on Madge!

  • I wouldnt want Madge at my holiday party...poisoning my Palmolive with Mercury and stealing my husband, I can see it now..I remember this commercial, too. We had a dishwasher...but my Dad loved to do the dishes, and his hands weren't very soft...WAIT!!! I'm sooo confused...

  • this video was hilarious...WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY before i was born...oh well

  • I miss that insulting bitch.

  • They played this ad theme for what seemed like years in the 70's when I was a kid. Madge, Mrs. Olsen, the Quicker-picker-upper lady and Mr Whipple should have had a reunion. ;)

  • Mr. Whipple died recently. Doesn't that suck? I love the old Charmin commercials.

    70's commercials are so cool!!

Squeeze the Charmin in his memory.

  • Holy Moley! I remember seeing this commercial on television back in the very early 70's a gazillion times when I was a kid! LOL Great post!

  • Jan Miner ws "more than just Madge!" As AdamqK noted, she was a stage actress--but in the Golden Age of Radio more than 60 years ago, she was one of the highest-paid radio actresses of the day on a soap opera called "Hilltop House." (No word if was sponsored by Palmolive.) And she was a very astute businesswoman, too. Sorry, Doris Roberts, there's only one Madge...

  • Madge didn't take prisoners with her caddy remarks (LOL).

  • I can't thank you enough for putting this video on youtube - I so remember this!

  • Does anyone have any Palmolive commercials with the Spanish super star Charityn " blond of America"

  • Jan Miner, who played Madge, was actually a fine stage actress. I saw her perform a couple of times, and I knew someone who worked with her who said she was absolutely brilliant. Still, she had to pay the bills.

  • I SO remember this ad.

  • Has anyone ever washed dishes with Palmolive? It really is very gentle on the hands!

  • Yeah... I have. And, Like the heavy smoker madge says, it really IS soft on hands. My Aunt used to be a manucurist and where she worked used pamolive in the softening dishes

  • And it makes a really good liquid hand soap!

  • In 1963, there was a commercial for Palmolive soap (green or pink) where they suggested that it be used twice a day as a facial cream "to keep any woman younger looking".

  • It's my favorite, and the scent is nostalgic to me; my mom used it.

  • Bad news Madge - you're fired...

Guess you'll have to go back to dancing at Bazookas

  • I don't mind bustin' suds as long as I'm using Palmolive.

  • You're soaking in it-relax its palmolive!

  • okay, stop paying manucurists and buy a dishwasher.

  • It softens your hands while you do the dishes.

  • madge rocks!!
