Bonnie, That is most beautiful. My father passed last year and all I have is a few photos and my memories many in the form of tools from his workshop that when I use them, I see him. Good idea and best of luck.
I injured myself and have not given it to him yet, but I will do so soon. Interesting idea, working with the tools that your father worked with. That gives me an idea for a video.
On another topic, I hope you don't get too fazed by the stupid comment left by the kid before me, it has nothing to do with you, insults are always directed at one's self.
I'm just new to your videos, but I find your thoughts, ideas and questions very compelling and interesting. I would enjoy setting up my grandparents on both sides of the family with a webcam and a Youtube account. My grandmother (Germany) and my fiancee's grandfather (China) are 90, both speak excellent English have a rich bank of experience (including personal accounts of WWII that are very dramatic).
I hope you will be able to get them webcams. I think in China YouTube has been blocked (I have not verified that - just heard it around). I wonder if China is blocking LiveVideo's site.
My father was a WWII vet too. It always surprises me when people younger than me had fathers in WWII, because even with most people my age whose fathers were veterans, they served in Korea. (Only the 3rd time in 3 months that someone has accidentally deleted one of my comments, not counting repeats. I have seen your "Gray Out" video BTW. Good idea.)
I am my father's 5th child, and was not planned. He was 42 when I was born and all my siblings from him are considerably older. The same goes for the siblings from my mothers side. I am the youngest of 6 there and the next closest is 11 years older than me. Thanks for re-posting.
letters are similar to that. but it's like comparing books with films. So I guess video is the "new" letter about views and such and seems like a more prefered option. It's more easy you see his/her face's expessions while they're talking..
I agree webcam letters are the new letter. I never was much of a letter writer. So while I understand the value of letters, I am glad there is an alternative.
EXCELLENT question and beautiful gift idea for your father! As for me, the only thing stopping me from doing the same is that my grandparents have all been deceased for some time. My grandfather was a WWII vet as well, so it's a shame he didn't share more before Alzheimers set in.
Have to cherish the access we have WHEN we have it, right? So kudos to you for your web cam purchase!!
What about your parents? Or do you know all there is to know from them ;-) . I would give one to my mother, but she needs to focus on making money and i get all my self censorship stuff from her, so if I gave her a webcam, she would never leave the house and probably never post a video. lol.
Man, what I would give to be able to watch videos of my mom. She died from cancer in '98 and I miss her even today. To be able to make even a digital connection to her, just thinking about it is bringing a lump to my throat. Do it, do it today before you lose your opportunity. Let us know if and when he posts.
Grandparents (who recently passed away). And now my parents, I suppose. One can never tell when they will go, and we all have a story to tell. Thanks for asking.
I probably should have mentioned you having your father on too. Even just showing him working on the guitar, that is such an important piece of documentation for Lilly. I wish I had videos of my grandfathers and grandmothers. Maybe that's the sales pitch. Lilly's legacy. ;-)
Bonnie, I've sent you two personal emails but neither went through. I want to give you my personal email address but don't know how to do it. I saw you at live video. Should I try there?
I think everyone is going to be very surprised. We don't look a think like each other. Also, I am hoping he will feel free to say things I would not be likely to say. After all, he is beyond the age of caring what other people think. Let me know if your brother starts posting.
Great idea. I have photos albums of my granparents but it would have been great to hear their thoughts, dreams, views of the world in a video format. Look at geriatric1927 what a life and what a legacy he leaves for his family and the worl to enjoy.
Yes, pictures are wonderful, but it leaves me with so many questions. I like that you use the word legacy. Most times people think of money as the only legacy, when in fact our real legacy is passing on what we know and experienced.
I was stunned that at my fathers 80th b-day celebration (a several day hang out at my dad's vacation place); not many of the grandkids, or even great grandkids asked to hear stories. I think they will come to regret that. I got up early every day to hang out with my father and his best friend and ask them for stories over breakfast.
My brother did something similar with my mom but only on tape. He asked her questions about her childhood etc and shared the tape with my sister and me. What a wonderful idea you have. I am looking forward to the vids.
This is such a great idea!Youtube should be full
of more old folk. They've lived a life.Of course they're more interesting!!Hope your dad gets a blog going here!

Yes, exactly. I don't need my father to leave me money; I want the legacy that money can't buy.

I think Id like to have my brother on youtube, he has all these cool ideas and he'd be good on here.
Considering my parents and/or grandparents...I dont know if Im ready to even tell them that I make videos...maybe when Im older :x
But it got me thinking of what people have to say in this situation..
Cant wait for your Dad to get on!
