I do a little bit of snorkeling in the north east and am interested in spearfishing. I am curious as to what kind of equipment I would need besides my mask, snorkel, fins and suit. What is the yellow thing hanging from your wrist.
@seahunter1 how does one go about getting into the sport of spearfishing? this is so fucking awesome i gotta try it. Are there certification courses or any special licenses needed? watching your videos makes me wanna try it out so bad
@utah0uts I dive year-round in 48-58 degree water off California (Sonoma to Big Sur) in a 5mm open cell wetsuit. Stays warm for the first 2 hours but after that I get cold if I sit still too long.
Oh, and nice vermillion rockfish seahunter!! I'm marinemammal on spearboard.
@MILLIONAIRE916 Its a flashlight on my wrist. The range of that gun is probably about 8 feet. The reel is so if I shoot a fish in a hole and the shaft gets stuck I can swim to the surface with my gun. It has kept that gun from getting lost more then once.
I really like this video, the footage was well done and even though I have never tried this sport, you made it look like something i'd like to try. Is it hard to learn to dive to that depth? I assume that it's a skill that you acquire from just lots of practice.
No we don't have them here. We have wolf eels that get 5-6 feet long and they eat urchins. I had a piece of one and it tasted good, but other guys say they taste bad so maybe the taste is variable. We also have monkey face eels that are pretty good tasting and get 3 feet long, but they live in cracks that are in 3-4 feet of water so most guys don't spear them since we are out deeper.
@seahunter1,cheers mate Ive always stayed away from congers as my father always told me to steer clear,Ive heard of people spearing them though, your vids are great anyway man, that seaweed you have there is insane
I've watched this video a dozen times and it never gets boring. Good choice of music and video shots. Was your partner on scuba or was he also freediving. I'm just getting into spearfishing and this video always gets me excited.
I tried two 14mm bands. It had good power, but the bands didn't sit right in the muzzle slot so I switched to one 20mm band. That looked better, but doesn't have enough power in my opinion. I have switched back to 2 bands. I might try two 16mm bands.
I have never seen one up here and I haven't heard of anyone seeing a WSB in sonoma Co either. Boat fishermen catch a few in marin county and in the Bay. I have heard guys see them in monteray occasionally. .
I live in So Cal. Sure want to learn how. done alot of shallow spearfishing, (inland waterways 30' or less). Kelp forest looks intimidating. I think I would put fish in float. though... Aren't there some big sharks up in Nor Cal?
hey man were in norcal i fish in santa cruz a couple times, but i just moved here now so i can head out alot more now. that is some nice water quality. best reef i found over here the water isnt that good and its arond 55ft so i cant stay down that long, hopefully ill have some of your lungs soon...
The first fish does look like a canary, but it is a vermillion rockfish. They look similar especially that particular fish since it had so much white on it's side, but once it is at the surface you can see that most of the white is already fading away and that it is a much darker red color then a canary.
When Vermilion rockfish are alive they commonly have white patches and even a white outline on a portion of their lateral line. Once dead they fade to a solid deep red color. The white lateral line is one characteristic used for ID, but color is often a poor characteristic to use. Vermilion have little to no fork in the caudal fin (tail), while canaries caudal fin is forked. The lobes of the caudal and anal fins on vermilion are rounded while the lobes on canary rockfish come to a sharp point.
My brother wears the elios. The picasso is mine. It is an older picasso. They don't make that color anymore, but it was a gray and black camouflaged suit. I don't remember the name of it.
That depends on where you are diving, but on the north coast it is probably not a good idea to use a belt stringer. We usually use a spearfishing float, but I wanted the shot of my brother's catch on his belt.
ohh thats kool...i wish i could go spearfishing here but im too afraid of sharks lol i have however gone spear fishing on the island where im from (sao jorge, AZORES). Well good luck, glad you replied.
I HAVE AN ra 70 AND I HUNT ON BC'S WEST COAST. ITS A BEAUTIFUL GUN FOR SMALL GAME FISH LIKE ROCKIES AND LINGERS.
