@aladdr71 just watched your RPG-7 video saw this and was like why not? had no idea mortars had triggers now. i always thought of the type where you dropped the round and it launched when i heard Mortar
Japanese invented that in WWII. US vets thought a knee mortar was fired from the knee. Too bad for them when they tried it, they ended up with broken legs.
@hans2406 Sometimes a howitzer is too much gun. Or there are no major artillery assets available. That's when your local CO can call upon his mortars to bring in fire nice and close.
It's actually relatively simple, the hard part is coordinating them effectively.
Basically you have a shell, the tube and a base. The base has a device that you use to adjust the tube to a certain angle for specific ranges, then you simply take the shell, while holding the tube in place and let it slide down, it will strike the firing pin at the bottom and shoot off, just like you saw.
A little practice is required to make this work well of course but... in practice it's simple
@SlyBlackNinja a mortar shoots a grenade high into the air. with mortars you can hit close or long range targets just from above like artillery, its just "artillery" for infantry
Mortars are high angle indirect fire, artillery shoots in a direct arc. This is what makes mortars so desireable because you can drop rounds into areas that artillery simply cannot hit..
@shmodzilla depends on the artillery; a mortar is just a scaled and stripped down howitzer which also (usually) uses indirect fire, but something like a flack gun or a recoilless rifle uses direct fire.
@silverd20 Yea sorry i read my post again it was misleading. My main point to him was it is high angle unlike regular artillery such as the 105's that shoot basically as an arc. The shoot at an entirely different way. With a 105 you can't land them in deep valleys or the opposite sides of hills,thats where the mortars come in handy because we can drop rounds straight down into them.
ye thats the 60mm hand held, which is a variant of the long barrel 60mm. the hand held is for light infantry to use quickly out on the ground. its not as qccurate and is the only type of matar with a trigger

someone could warn you that it is being shot, you could go get a coffee, make some breakfast and still have 3 mins to spare.

There is a range bubble on the trigger and you aim with your thumb on the barrel.

@shmodzilla I can certainly agree with you on that then XD

@SlyBlackNinja
Round dropped in, slides down tube, hits pin, fires, explodes on target.
In this case, the trigger sets off the round, but normal/bigger mortars go off as soon as they strike the base of the tube.
