Actually...these guys are all good. But it puzzles me how the producers who sample the most are the best. Not saying sampling is bad, but am saying how are they the best? Is it because they know how to use other peoples work and make it into something likeable in hip-hop? What happened to the people who produce beats from scratch? yes but 70% of hip hop is sampling from older usually lesser known songs and just using literally a 1 second sound and then tweaking that sound into different notes to make a beat. therefore the reason they are the best producers alive is because they have embraced that art of production and make amazing beats outta them... :)

They're not saying those dudes are the best MUSICIANS, just the best at THEIR craft, which happens to be sampling other musicians successful work. Make sense now? It actually takes a bit of practice and dedication like any other instrument(i also play trumpet professionally and do a little piano) so they ARE actually quite talented.

@Adrenalinex03 Tru dat, but originally, hip hop producers didnt have any formal musical training or equipment. But they had musical ideas that they needed to express. Also, if they created it from scratch, it would make them a "composer" not a producer, even though some modern composers(myself included) still call themselves producers. And its not who samples the most, its WHAT they sample and how people identify with the original. Basically, old hits make new hits.

@donlon77 Timbo is definately number one as far as his concepts and drumming, but he steals(not samples) his melodies from foreign music. Then adds drums and sfx to make it sound like hip hop. Producers like dj premier, 9th wonder, eric b etc. used ELEMENTS from other songs like breaks, some vocals or the bridge and created a whole new feel. So unless the "verve and life" comes from the drums only, then he aint the one responsible.

@DotsandMusic I'd say, as a producer myself, where i can play instruments, i feel the advantage is simply, playing it how i know i want it.. at the end of the day, if you can't play piano, there is always someone who can replicate what's in your head. However if you can play it yourself, you can really get going. most producers aren't incredible at alot of instruemtns, maybe one or two, but, like you said, it's the creativity.
