Landing Gear being lowered-It was a common theory that landing gear being lowered was a sign of surrender. Not so im afraid, the hydrolics were either shot through, note hydrolic fluid catching fire, or pilots lowered in order to create massive drag slowing aircraft down in the hope persueing aircraft will overshoot. Great vid and music -nice 1
Historically, when the landing gear comes down in mid-flight while being shot at, it is a sign that the aircraft being attacked is literally "surrendering" in mid flight . .So the attacker has the option of that point of either having the plane escorted back to their base (unlikely), or allowing the pilot the chance to bail out. Was rather uncommon for the practice, but that is what the message is being conveyed back to the attacking pilot.
@leftoverpoet Don't know if it's hydraulic failure, but the Hurricanes landing gear is coming down because whatever is holding it up is being shot to pieces. Time to bail out.

For the German 109 Aces the skies were filled with easy targets, because russians didn't have so good fighters in the early years of the war, and in later years they were still well behind the Luftwaffe when it came to pilot training and fighter development.
@svobobo Somewhat agree, but by '43 & '44 the Russians had come a long way, both in airplane & pilot quality. Many were just as good as any German, but the majority of those were the ones that survived the early years, therefore gaining valuable experience & knowledge.
...dogfight is a typical series where "the winners write the story" i remenber a story when a old us-pilot tells he has seen on his way back from action one of the captures p51 with swatzsika.. imagine the figth was across sout germany and the place where captured aircraft beeing testflight is around berlin - lousy 1000km away..
@mitsubishi109 Dogfights is a completely biased show. I remember I got very angry when they portrayed the F-15 downing a Serbian MiG-29 as a piece of heroic flying, when in fact the MiG-29 had a malfunctioning radar, and an out of order RWR (radar warning receiver) so the pilot was effectively completely blind and unable to fight. Also, that fight was portrayed as a 1 on 1 fight, when in fact a few dozens NATO arcraft were in air and only 2 migs (both without working radar due to sanctions).
@TeutonicKnight39 The FW-190 was a great plane no doubt, but according to a lot of Mustand pilots they would dive away and not engage in dogfights. With 2 good pilots I would still go with the P-51.
The Focke-Wulf 190 was certainly a very good machine,but it only had total dominance for about 3 months after it first appeared along the Channel Front, in reasonable numbers, in late 1941. At the end of that period the Spitfire IX was brought into squadron service and the 190's 'happy hunting' days were over. Still extremely dangerous but no more so than the Spit 9.
Erich Hartmann was the greatest ace of WW2. He shot down 352 aircraft. 345 of his victories were Russian. I would think the Russian pilots were terrified to hear that Hartmann was in the air. What we don't see in this footage is the airplanes that crashed or broke up after a barrage of bullets. Some would crash on the way home or crash on landing because of being badly shot up. The Germans had some great pilots, and airplanes. But latter in the war they lacked the fuel, and training.
@motorguzzi100 Hans Rudel was a great pilot, but If Hans shot down anything, it was probably a tank, ship, truck or someting in that line. Hans Rudel flew a JU-87 Stuka. A dive bomber. He was a hero in Germany during WW2. Yes, and he was good at what he did.
@gewerhmann at that time (and i believe to that date also) Russians never knew there was a german pilot who scored solely that number of kills against them, they only believed the germans were hot shots in the air but not to the degree there is someone with 352 scores, its unlike vietnam war or korea war
@gewerhmann dont forget that they where almost in a maniac state in doing perfect things if they could take of just a pound of the weight in their machine by doing the components perfect they would do it and that resulted in a fine machine but it took longer time to make them and the resarch took longer to =)
@gewerhmann The German's where very strict on giving confirmed kills/victories. Just because you gun camera showed you shot a B-17 to hell wiith a 20 or 30 mm cannon, if the aircraft did'nt go down or explode someone else in your squdron had to confirm it. We've all seen some of this footage, most was lost. I've watched three docs about b-17's and b-24's and the times they DID mke it back the plane was so shot up it could never fly again. Not to mention 10 crewmen inside a B-17 getting hit:(

Although, I have to say, there was footage on the History channel of dramatic attacks on B-17s & 24s by Me110s, 109s, & what ever else. However, not a one of a German downing an American fighter. Just the opposite.

@kolbpilot Yes, in Defense of the Reich - the Germans lost 15, 430 planes in combat. The USA lost 18, 000 and the British lost 22, 00 so more than twice as many.
@leftoverpoet To me, the number of airplanes from all countries involved was truly mind blowing. Never to be seen again, all we can do is read about it.
I agree, as an american, I'm always disappointed that there aren't more documentaries on German aviators. they had some AMAZING pilots, and even though we were enemies, they should be treated with the respect of a proper dogfighter. That goes for any pilot from any nation.
@kolbpilot Yea the History channel is one sided. Just look into what U.S. bomber factories were churning out by 43 and ask yourself how many would make it. In '43 the numbers where depresing. WE DID USE FIGHTER SUPPORT BEFORE THE P-51! I'm sure the H channel doesn't say that Brit's concieved that fighter. They needed us to build them something rock solid to fight off the 109's that were attacking their ports. We agreed, but the engine sucked. The Brit's threw in the Rolls Royce Merlin
@christopherb27 That was the creation of the P-51. We designed the aircraft(I cannont confirm this) and the Brit's gave us the engine that put it at the top of the fighter list in ww2. The would continue to produce Merlin's for the spitfire mark 9(second best fighter made in that period in my humble opinion) but sold the right's to Packard here to make them. Funny side note, as soon as the fighters reached over sea's the Americn sprak plugs where pulled out first thing and replaced with Brit's
@christopherb27 The British wanted N. American to build them more P-40s under license. N. American said they could come up with their own design & indeed they did. The Allison used in the '51 was not a bad engine at all, just not up to the caliber of the RR Merlin. You're right about the spark plugs, I read that some where long ago. Apparently the American ones fouled out & the British plugs performed better. I doubt they were Lucas plugs though.
@kolbpilot Yea that's a more detailed summary.I also read interviews of pilots who flew the '51 with the Allison, (yea those where rock solid engines) and then the prototype with the Merlin. The said it was like going from driving a chevy truck* to a Roll's Royce. * I don't remeber what the comparison was too, but they did falll in love with the Merlin. Once it was in the Spitfire mark 9, Germany started to loose the race for air supremecy. Of course the ME-262 was a beast, it came to late.
@TeutonicKnight39 What gets the Mustang it's status as #1 is that it was a joint US/GB design, wasn't a slouch in any dogfight, and, most of all was it's range. When you can take the fight into the enemy's back yard and sustain the battle, it's a hard point to argue. The FW-190 was definitly a great fighter! More than a match for many, many aircraft and devastating firepower!
@MrDavkoz I have tried to find info about Luftwaffe drop tanks with no success. I have seen pics of them on 109's early in the war, but am not sure if they were "drop" or "ferry" tanks. (ferry tanks have to be removed by ground crews) Any info anyone might have would be much appreciated! Good question too you had, I have also wondered the exact same thing!
Luftwaffe pilots and German Flak shut down average ~ 4% of these bombers. Bomber crew made normally only 20 flight to Germany but only about 30% managed to safe their lives. 70% were killed or captured. There were no big differences between RAF Bomber Command and US 8th Air Force.
On the other hand - germans, russians, finns and others in eastern front had to fly hundreds and hundreds of combat missions during the war -ie. until they were killed or captured.
I want to see luftwaffe guncam footage of planes having wings being torn off by the bullets. I guess the allies burned that stuff by the end of the war.
@rolfyboy8 That's a silly comment! That sort of thing RARELY happened-it's not like a video game, after all; in any case at the end of the war, very little gun camera film survived on EITHER side;
Any idea what plane is being shot up at 2:51 is? Never seen an allied aircraft flare up quite like that before; I know the prior planes are La5s but I am not sure about this one...Is it a mustang? It's the only allied plane that i know that has fuel tanks in it's wings.
@gunzoline93 Well the Hurris were obsolete but if they didn't have to deal with a single engine fighter they did OK; the Spits? Well....everybody LOVES the Spit-the Epitome of Aviation Beauty, it is.
Watch the other plane pass the Spit, right as the camera moves up you can see an impact flash and small trail of smoke near the engine/cockpit. Did he just accidently hit that plane?
@JagGruppen1 yes SOMETIMES the gear down DOES mean surrender; but sometimes it' IS just hydraulic damage---the famous B17 being shot up by the Me110 was pretty clearly a badly damaged straggler; the 110 was apparently out of cannon ammo because 'somebody who knows more than I do' said the 110 was using up it's 7.92 mg ammo.
@JagGruppen1 Let me elaborate: the 100th bomb group had such high casualties it was once thought the LW was singling it out; the 'legend' says that a 100th BG B17 with hydraulic damage was flying with it's landing gear down & several LW fighters, seeing this, tried to escort it to one of their airbases; trouble was it wasn't surrendering it was just damaged so the gunners wound up shooting down or damaging nearly a dozen fighters-and that's why they say the 100th had such a hard time.
That is a very old myth, the only thing that Luftwaffe fighter pilots saw in the air were overwhelming armadas of B-17s and B-24s and were eager to shoot every single one of them out of the sky.
singling out a specific heavy bombardment group to annihilate was simply impossible.
@Eurofighter19 Yes JUST a myth and totally impossible but the 100th men used to think they were jinxed. Truth is, it appeared that the 100th had relatively poor leadership early on--the officers didn't always work hard on keeping a tight formation--and a loose, sloppy formation always attracted unwanted attention from the LW.
Early poor leadership in the Bloody Hundredth is well renowned as I have found it in several books I've read about the 8th Air Force and during 1943 before the advent of a true strategic fighter in the form of the P-51, the 100th received several punishing blows by the LW by not keeping tight combat box formations and hence less defensive concentrated firepower.
It's understandable to think that airmen became at one point paranoid about the unwanted attention by the Luftwaffe.
@lithopoonwit: How could someone who is able to read and write provide such bullshit? Do you really think that you live in our world? Who has washed (better: removed) your brain?
@lithopoonwit dude, throw a nice party with your "friend" jesus christ, but not everyone believes in your profecy. this is a social community not a your-online-church community. and people like you won't survive the future, because your sort of people thinks that when this planet is all used up to the grim we just squash another one out like an orange.
btw: who sent the bible to earth, an inter heaven-eart hfax machine, yeah right?
OMFG THAT IS POSSIBLY THE DUMBEST FUCKING THING THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD/READ IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!
YOU SERIOUSLY NEED TO CONCISER SUICIDE.
besides jesus doesnt love you, cause hes dead, and god sure doesn't either cause, i hate to burst you bubble, he doesnt and never will exist therefore the way you chose to make your life as a "soldier of jesus fucking christ" is a hindrance to society and we no longer need your stupidity holding back humanity.
@a155099 oh shit this fucker is so tough im scared, god doesnt exist neither does jesus blah blah youre just a fat coward hiding behind a pc moron ,, i bet that in the face of danger youll be crying and praying god to save your coward ass pig
@a155099 Very true! Can we get rid of that iron age religion please? It is holding humanity back big time. So because there is a bogeyman above the clouds watching you.. That he will get pissed of if you don't listen to an old dude in a dress and a funny hat that spews the biggest nonsense ever? Thats what you decide to base your live on? Retards...
Clearly the Nazis were soldiers of Christ as they replaced the Bible with Mein Kampf in churches and preists had to give sermons based on Mein Kampf. Germany surely did not loose because it was a lost cause from the beginning doomed from Hitlers insanity and inepitude and the fact that one nation-state was trying to take on THE WHOLE WORLD from some crack-pot- ideology.
Hurricane was actually quite poor in dogfights. Finnish aces said that it was one of the easiest fighters to shut down russians got from western allies. On the other hand Mustang, which was almost perfect, was however too difficult to handle for average pilot. . However most common american plane russians used was Aircobra. Russians - they never really learnt how to use cannon and they always flied little bit too low Easy meat for Bf-109 G
@PanterausfG I agree some Dogfights manouvres are so unreal,that only a child could believe it.Naive and stupid.The German pilots were very good airmen as other.
If I am understanding your comment correctly, you are asserting that you would stop shooting when someone dropped their gear.
Sorry, but they generally stopped shooting when the enemy pilot was dead or when the plane was completely non-operative. This wasn't a game. Landing gear down meant zip. You were fair game until you got out of the plane. Many pilots were killed while attempting to bail out. It was not clean business.
I used to be the same way. Then I read a book by the famous RAF ace Johnnie Johnson. He told a story of a nasty and scary dogfight with an FW-190 pilot. He finally got a good shot on the FW and damaged it. The German pilot was clambering out of his plane. Johnson said he shot into the plane a couple more times insuring he killed the pilot. He said, the pilot was so good that he probably saved a lot of RAF lives that day. I was 12 at the time and that story shocked me.
yeah i definitely agree for infantry the germans had a better system than the allies(particularly the americans replacement system)but in the air it was different,it was an inneficient and cruel system much like the americans infantry replacement system where the veterans continually fight till they die and replacements get little to no help. yeah, i understand there were much more non- aces than aces...but the aces are the ones who write the memoirs people care to read about.
ok thanks i didnt know about that cause generally you only hear the stories of aces,more experienced pilots. its not the logical thing to do(freeze) but i guess it happened quite a bit.
Both terms are equaly used. Bf term are more related to Emil beacose of Bayerische Flugzeuge which later change name to Messerschmitt. Even in original German documents u will see both terms used. And plz sustain your language..no need for that..got it?
The FW 190's a GREAT fighter but designer Kurt Tank (being a cavalryman in WW1) designed his plane as a "practical" 'workhorse/plowhorse' rather than a pampered 'thoroughbred' like the 109--IE: More rugged & adaptable than the 109. So not so much a race-car like a Porsche but something more like a 'old' Cadillac-big & powerful;
The tracer rounds look like they're moving really slowly. I guess wind resistance is slowing them down. They're so slow you wouldn't think they would have any impact. Looks just like somebody throwing ball bearings.
It is your angle that makes them look slow. The muzzle velocities are all about 700m/s. You can just can't easily tell whether the round is 100 meters away or 400. The only thing easy to gauge is the vertical drop.
Yep, you're right. Had a closer look now. I was a bit confused by the high position of the tailwing, but maybe it was recorded from slightly below. In any case, a good hit. :-)
@RudeRaptor If this hasn't already been answered, then yes it's an LA5; I have a vid I bought called 'Luftwaffe Gun Camera' & that clip was ID'd as FW109 v LA5
First victim of war is the truth. Russians have problems to addmit that when Luftwaffe had to pull most of their fighters from east to west, Italy and Reich, the german groundforces lost their aircover. The best example is Operation Bagration where Soviet U had some 6000 aircraft but Luftwaffe in Belo Russia got only 40 serviceable fighters! 40!!! Over 1200 were in Reich and some 400 in Italy and much more in west.
Russians can't stand the fact that Luftwaffe keep 3/4 of their fighters in western front most of time during ww2.E.g in autumn 1943there were twice as many dayfighters against US 8th Air-Force than in whole eastern front.
But still communists and "usefull idiots" are claiming that germans fought in east and took a rest in west. Germany lost the war first in west and in air.
No, they lost the war at Kursk and Stalingrad in 1943, we just chipped away at the other side. A bomber cannot take away territory from the enemy, even if it's in ruins it's still theirs.
Kursk was a good example how foreigh policy confused Hitler totally. Zitadelle plan was well known by russians and there was not much hope for germans when they started Zitadelle. But when Luftwaffe managed to swept away russian airforces in southern sector of Kursk they had changes to win the battle. However then Italy collapsed and Hitler wanted to stop the whole Zitadelle and as Manstein wrote: "Germans donated the victory to Stalin".
those 20mm cannons are nasty! but until the fw-190dora the 190s were more bomber busters/ground attackers than fighters and the 109 was just outclassed by the P-51, but as you can see all it takes is a few sec burst and any plane in front of those guns are pieces.
merlin engine was not that greater to the german engines.luftwaffe lost air wars cos outnumbered constantly by allies.

Good question too you had, I have also wondered the exact same thing!
jimmyggh1 1 year ago

@rolfyboy8 That's a silly comment! That sort of thing RARELY happened-it's not like a video game, after all; in any case at the end of the war, very little gun camera film survived on EITHER side;

Gear Down = Surrender !!!! :D KittyHawk !!!
JagGruppen1 1 year ago
@JagGruppen1 well if the hydraulics are damaged, the wheels can drop on their own.
nickmitsialis 1 year ago
@nickmitsialis S! M8... It is code... gear down is surrender aircraft... one famous photo look it.. 110 fly beside B17 with gear down... Kg.
JagGruppen1 1 year ago
@JagGruppen1 yes SOMETIMES the gear down DOES mean surrender; but sometimes it' IS just hydraulic damage---the famous B17 being shot up by the Me110 was pretty clearly a badly damaged straggler; the 110 was apparently out of cannon ammo because 'somebody who knows more than I do' said the 110 was using up it's 7.92 mg ammo.
nickmitsialis 1 year ago
@JagGruppen1 Let me elaborate: the 100th bomb group had such high casualties it was once thought the LW was singling it out; the 'legend' says that a 100th BG B17 with hydraulic damage was flying with it's landing gear down & several LW fighters, seeing this, tried to escort it to one of their airbases; trouble was it wasn't surrendering it was just damaged so the gunners wound up shooting down or damaging nearly a dozen fighters-and that's why they say the 100th had such a hard time.
nickmitsialis 1 year ago
@nickmitsialis
That is a very old myth, the only thing that Luftwaffe fighter pilots saw in the air were overwhelming armadas of B-17s and B-24s and were eager to shoot every single one of them out of the sky.
singling out a specific heavy bombardment group to annihilate was simply impossible.
Eurofighter19 1 year ago
@Eurofighter19 Yes JUST a myth and totally impossible but the 100th men used to think they were jinxed. Truth is, it appeared that the 100th had relatively poor leadership early on--the officers didn't always work hard on keeping a tight formation--and a loose, sloppy formation always attracted unwanted attention from the LW.
nickmitsialis 1 year ago
@nickmitsialis

I was 12 at the time and that story shocked me.

yeah i definitely agree for infantry the germans had a better system than the allies(particularly the americans replacement system)but in the air it was different,it was an inneficient and cruel system much like the americans infantry replacement system where the veterans continually fight till they die and replacements get little to no help. yeah, i understand there were much more non- aces than aces...but the aces are the ones who write the memoirs people care to read about.
marleynrs8 2 years ago
ok thanks i didnt know about that cause generally you only hear the stories of aces,more experienced pilots. its not the logical thing to do(freeze) but i guess it happened quite a bit.

I think of the 190 as a Porsche with wings. What a sweet piece of metal.
deino117 2 years ago 13
The FW 190's a GREAT fighter but designer Kurt Tank (being a cavalryman in WW1) designed his plane as a "practical" 'workhorse/plowhorse' rather than a pampered 'thoroughbred' like the 109--IE: More rugged & adaptable than the 109. So not so much a race-car like a Porsche but something more like a 'old' Cadillac-big & powerful;

The tracer rounds look like they're moving really slowly. I guess wind resistance is slowing them down. They're so slow you wouldn't think they would have any impact. Looks just like somebody throwing ball bearings.
DeafFret 2 years ago
Deaf,
It is your angle that makes them look slow. The muzzle velocities are all about 700m/s. You can just can't easily tell whether the round is 100 meters away or 400. The only thing easy to gauge is the vertical drop.

40!!! Over 1200 were in Reich and some 400 in Italy and much more in west.
tranmere789 2 years ago
Russians can't stand the fact that Luftwaffe keep 3/4 of their fighters in western front most of time during ww2.E.g in autumn 1943there were twice as many dayfighters against US 8th Air-Force than in whole eastern front.
But still communists and "usefull idiots" are claiming that germans fought in east and took a rest in west. Germany lost the war first in west and in air.
tranmere789 3 years ago 2
No, they lost the war at Kursk and Stalingrad in 1943, we just chipped away at the other side. A bomber cannot take away territory from the enemy, even if it's in ruins it's still theirs.
moomoo1337 2 years ago
"No, they lost the war at Kursk "
