As a resident of the PRC, I am shame of what the workshop owners' deeds, but I am even more pissed off by the local officials loss of humanity as well as justice.
The slaves have provided conspicuous benefit for the owners, and indirectly, for the local officials; The margin of these brick workshops comes to around 80%, and the owners put themselves not obligated for medical care, payment, social benefit, etc. There was one case that 6 mobsters + 4 vicious dogs guard these people day and night, the consequence is severe and horrific, among 15-20 workers of this workshop, 8 were beaten to anoia, several others suffer from obvious physical injuries.
One extreme case is that when parents themselves grouped together looking for their own kids amid these illegal workshops, the local police even prevented these civilians to take action to rescue the teens not belonging to them, stating:"Take care of your own child, leave the others alone."
And what is worse is that the government, local officials, local police departments knew the existence of this kind of slavery for as long as four years. They chose to share the bloody income with the workshop owners rather than taking actions to rescue any of these youth.
