They weren't righteous at all and I think there have been many Jewish people that wish that they hadn't been called out by God to suffer. You do not literally hate them, that is breaking a commandment that he reinforces as one of the most important. Jesus says Have no other god as the first and love thy neighbor as the second. Their is a heirachy with god at the top. And it also alludes to how we must run from sin and fight sinful nature.
