Men i cried looking at this movie, it really touched me. I still haven't looked at Howl's Moving Castle and i think i wont cuz you really are saying it was a disappointment and idk looking at it didnt make me want to see it.
I never really liked ponyo since to me the villains was like:
I will fill this well with these potions and flood the world, mwahahahaha
Ponyo then breaks the door, the water floods the well and the world starts ending (if he only needed sea water to fill the well dhy didn't he just open the door in the first place?)
Then the villain changes to "no this flooding is bad we must stop it"
I never figured out why the villain suddenly changed his tone completely and I was lost from that moment
@edl01reviews Its not a "Ponyo thing" with the villains its more of a "Miyazaki thing". Miyazaki has stated he feels the whole good vs. evil story plot to be too cliche and simplistic. He never writes truly evil villains or villains at all for that matter because he doesn't believe every story NEEDS a villain to fight. In fact, I believe with the exception of Colonel Muska in "Castle in the sky", there is not a "true villain" in every single one of Miyazaki's movies.
@edl01reviews Well let's be straight here, he was never even that bad to begin with, besides things kinda changed when his daughter became involved. I didn't see Earthsea but I did Mononoke and in truth, all the "bad guys" became good at the end anyway. None of the villains in Mononoke were out for anything evil purpose wise, they simply did what they believed was right and each "villain" changed after the end anyway, learned the error of their ways. Most real villains don't do that.
The Ponyo Film (Disney English DUB): C+: Very Cute Anime Movie, Great Art, but Whiny Characters, Repetitive Storyboard, and LONG Repetitive Transformation/ "Rescuing" sequence.... :/
So, Anyway, In My Opinion, I'm giving The Ponyo film a 7/10 and a C+, because, It's a Very Cute Anime Movie, but The Storyboard was kind of repetitive and other than the plot development In-between, and yeah, kind of Whiny Characters, and C+ for The Disney English Dub! :D
Not to mention that In My Opinion, The Human / Fussy Baby with a Non-Specific gender (Unlike Boh, Who's actually a Male from "Spirited Away" kind of drives me insane, personally, even though it's so adorable, because It gets sick when Ponyo tries to leave and In The Disney English Dub, the Young Mother anxiously said "Aw, You have a Cold!!!" and It like rarely made a Noise Even Louder than a whimper to get Ponyo's Attention (Supposedly), So, To Me, that was WAY TOO LOUD, but KAWAII anyways!!! :D
I don't think Ponyo should be faulted for having such a simple storyline. Miyazaki even stated in an interview, that the movie is specifically targeted towards five year olds. This is the type of movie that could (and should) be aired on Nick Jr.
This movie was great until the ending. The ending was bullshit. They are getting to the climax and sousuke has to prove his true love for Ponyo, and what is the grand love trial he has to persevere through ?
"hey sousuke, do you really love ponyo?"
"yes"
"okay I believe you. she can be a human forever now"
The End
I was like wtf?
I also agree that he kind of lost his touch with Howls Moving castle, which is my least favorite miyazaki film, and this one gave me hope again for the future.
@WarchiefBlackhand I really didn't have a problem with the ending. I think it was a bold and nice touch to try and play up a romance for children characters, I believe the "trial" was the walking through the tunnel scene and above all else: making sure he realizes the ramifications of what he's asking for Ponyo's sake. I found it touching in the sense that it shows a child can show true love and realizing how important Ponyo is as a person and not just a pet....but that;s me.
I was wondering BS, since you like Miyazaki just as much as I do, could you do a top 10 countdown on Miyazaki's films ? Since I saw your Things in Anime that must die, I thought you handle that video very well.
Truthfully I would really like to but unfortunately, I have not seen that many Miyazaki films. I have only seen Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Howl's moving castle, Ponyo, Spirited Away and Castle in the sky. So I would have to see about 4 more to do that if I get the chance.
personally, I perfer Makoto Shinkai's films over Miyazaki's films. Even though Miyazaki's films are amazing and I love them, they are overated in the sense that a lot of people think his films are the only good anime films out there. But other than that, I think Makoto's films have more meaning and emotion. it'd be great if you'd review one of his films :) maybe "5 centimeters per second"?
also how was this disappointing to anyone? Spirited Away as a film is his best and nothing will top it overall though you can still hate it. but Ponyo should be more compared with stuff like Totoro since it was aimed more at that same age range where as SA was for older kids and the rest are for teenagers to adults with elements kids can like.
yeah and if you didn't get it I kinda see SA to the Miazaki films: Citizen Kane is to film in general, there is a reason it's the best film of all time
People found this film was TOO kiddish and my guess is people had gotten so used to Miazaki's work being all serious and super complex (like Mononoke or Spirited Away) that a "simple story" was too well simple for them. I read a few reviews people actually said this was a disappointment for Miazaki to them.
well I really don't know, I get the impression from Whispers of the heart and the features in Spirited Away that he's an animation Director first and a story guy second as I find Whispers good but it isn't until that scene with the Baron that I feel I'm in a Miazaki film since he only wrote that one. his greatest strength to me is making a good story to go along with his incredible visuals.
@BionicSlime Man, I Really Wish that eventually that The Fussy Baby really needed to Stop Crying and Whining and Get a grip, Just Like In Sprited Away, I've really wished that eventually that Boh really needed to Stop Crying and Whining and Get a Grip! >:(
Myazaki is the GOD of Anime, I Saw PONYO Friday night & it was great! Kind of Kiddy like totoro, but still very very enjoyable! Studio Ghibli & Myazaki are the best! Can't Wait to See his son's Work TALES OF EARTHSEA, Next Summer.
wasn't Howl a book first? If you have any issues on that one it's more about how he dicided to bring someone elses world and rules to life. the last film he really made before this was Spirited Away, I think he only took over for howl when a different director was unable to do it.
and here is something, while I don't think he should there has been a sequel to his films before and he could make one to this film that could take place later in the kids lives when the problems might arise but it would loose all the simple magic this movie had so I don't know if he could pull it off.
Whether Howl was a book or not my review is based on the content of the movie, if the story is lacking then my comments go to how the movie was presented. Whether the story was done accurately or poorly, my views on the content remain the same. I judged the content based on what I saw in the film and judged it as is.
By the demons of the sea I will have HAAAM!

@BionicSlime yes but it is entirely contradictory to just change roles like that
Also maybe it is just me but I noticed main villains in films like princess mononoke and tales from earthsea (granted that was his son)
it is your entirely your opinion of course and I won't insult it
