There is heaps of phenolphtalein at any local school. Kids use that as an acid indicator and ethyl alcohol IS ethanol. But I think isopropyl rubbing alcohol should do too =)

or u could use lemon juce...

squeez lemon juce into a bowl. take a cotton swab and write message on paper. to see message, rub a hot iron onto the paper. if ur too lazy to do all that "hard work" to make dissapering ink, get a friend to do it for u. WARNING: do not use a hot iron if ur retarded.

ethyl alcohol is just to dissolve the thymolphthalein powder. It doesn't affect the indicator, hence thymolphthalein doesn't change colour UNTiL the NaOH is added.

It's Chemistry 101 all over again....

The idea here is that the thymolphthalein, a colour indicator, will change colour depending on the pH of the chemical. Since NaOH is basic it turns purple.

The NaOH evaporates when you squirt the solution on paper. Rubbing NH4, which is also basic, on the paper will cause the colour to reappear again.

Lemon juice can be used to I think. Load up a pen on lemons, write with it. Hold the paper right next to a bright light bulb to reveal the message.

I don't know if this is a wise idea to make this disappearing ink. The chemicals that are required to make it sound dangerous. Seeing how you need to wear safety goggles and gloves.

I think it's funny how they warn you against these chemicals coming in contact with your skin or eyes.

What will happen if someone doesn't wash their hands after touching these chemicals? Do these chemicals cause cancer? What will happen if these chemicals get into someone's eye? Will their vision be damaged?
