God damn. Watching this as a kid I never thought years later I would get to fight her in Kingdom Hearts. That dragon has to be one of the most bad ass dragons ever created.
@hadomaru I don't get people like you. You can't have a good story or movie without a good villain, and a villain is not a villain unless they are clearly evil.
Anyone else think that these classic princess stories were written by necrophiliacs? I mean, kissing the ice cold lips of a corpse-like princess does not exactly appeal to me.
And that, my friends, is what you show people when they say Disney is for kids. If you really feel like pushing the envelope, try showing them the Hunchback of Notre Dame or Pinocchio
this is incredible like being at the theatre, all the ambience and noises build up so perfectly to the conclusion, all the instrumentals sounding off the thunder and clash of battle this makes for one of the most beautifully captured styles of animation. A shame that there are not many and current productions that attempt this.
I don't understand why Maleficent was so surprised he got through the thorns, what was she expecting? "Hmm...he got past my guards attacking him with axes, shooting arrows at him, dropping oil on him, and dropping boulders on him...I know what'll stop him! A BUSH!"
@SPSFOREVER Well, when I was a kid, I fell into a rose bush, and it took what felt like hours to get out (safetly, at least). I think a giant forest of thorns wouldn't be so easy to get through in real life xD
@iwantoldschool CGI can be great when used sparingly and correctly. When it's overused, such was the case in Green Lantern, then it becomes annoying. I don't think getting rid of CGI is the right answer because it's the next step in animation (so long as it doesn't replace traditional animation completely). What we do need are more directors who know how to handle CGI properly.
@BellesBeauty16 People forgot what cartoons were supposed to be. That's what happened. The last decade we had good cartoons was the 90s. But now, cartoons aren't that fun to watch anymore.
@BellesBeauty16 the answer is that adults want to regulate what their kids actually want, & then the market starts to bend, creating another soulless trend again & again. Horrible, let the kids have some goddamn quality & care in their stories I say.
7:17. Anyone who still thinks digital 3D animation is worthy to tie the shoelaces of traditional animation needs to watch this entire ending, from the death battle of Maleficent to moment 7:17. Watch the movement of the train of Aurora's dress.
Digital animation is an oxymoron and a lie. Send it back to optics, effects and explosions where it belongs.
This, folks -- hand-drawn, hand-painted cels as rendered by the peerless Walt Disney and his crew -- is animation.
Play this video with the Elderscrolls v them Sons of Skyrim playing, at about 2:08, if you start the Chorus part right when the flame hits Philips shield.. things turn even more epic.
Whenever people say being gay is a choice made later in life, I'm like, "No. I was madly in love with Prince Phillip at age 3 or 4. Both of my parents can attest to this. Good day, sir." The one and only Disney prince I have eyes for.
The remains of Maleficent at the bottom with the sword sticking out always used to puzzle me- is that black and purple splat her cloak? And what is the meaning of the sword turning dark after the zoom in? Whatever it is, it's a brilliant way to show the villain's end and a classic scene (and film) all round :)
@cameronboy18 It is a way to show that the sword lost its holy power of love but also sent Maleficent, which symbolises the greatest evil to her/its doom.Maleficent is after all is a female form of the devil, she summons all the powers of hell, she is self proclaimed "Mistress of all evil",she even wears black horns and transforms into dragon, symbol of evil in christianism(Apocalypse)So the sword is actually all that is good.
@santoouin--- Thanks! I always loved that bit, when Philip pokes his head over the cliff and there's that dramatic sound and zoom in, kind of makes sense :)
Every Man must search for the sleeping Beauty (your SOUL) WITHIN himself. Only when the Prince (Your MIND) has decided to go in search of Sleeping Beauty within yourself does the "Quest" really begin. In order to awaken the Beauty within himself the prince (Your Mind) must overcome all the trials and challenges of life, only when you have slayed your INNER DRAGON (Your Lower animal nature ie Lusts, bad habbits ect) can you awaken the Beauty within yourself and truly become a Man.
omg i remember watching this so many freaking times as a kid i miss watching disney movies all the time it was such a fun age but i never realized that :(
Really? "Doug Walker sent me"? How have people not heard of this sequence prior to his review for Sleeping Beauty? And even if they had, they pick now of all times to discuss it? This scene deserved that respect long before Mr. Critic came along and talked about it, so don't come praising it now because he told you to.
the St. George allegory aaaah so well done god bless the old disney good times. Frog Princess was the last great movie and we all know Lion King is the greatest
This has to be one of the best climaxes in Disney history. Everything just oozes epic here. Maleficent is awesome, the prince actually gets to kick some ass, the animation is great and the backdrop music (from Tchaikovsky's ballet) is just amazing. It's just epic! :D
It has to be the most impressive battle Disney has ever done. The amazing thing about it is this was done in 1959 and all hand-drawn. Today's CGI can never compare to this mastery of animation.
@TeenGemini01 hahah this reminds me so much of legend of zelda: LINK! i mean cmon...the sword that can kill a dragon (master sword), an evil wizard turns into a monster (ganon becomes ganondorf), and has faires to help him (navi fairy)! He also rides a horse like Epona in the game!! Oh yeah, he rescues a princess usual XD
Because of the Nostalgia Critic, I over-think on the movies growing up as a child.
1.) If the three good fairies could help Prince Phillip escape, why didn't they help him fight against Maleficient?
2.) Maleficent's technically isn't really dead because of Phillip's sword infected with the darkness. Unless if someone touches it, the darkness could affect that person. Was Maleficent human?
3.) Disney is just going to let go that Prince Phillip just kissed a dead corpse. Necrophilia anyone?
@jsteffey88 i dont think kissing aurora as necrophilia.. sence it was just a kiss to bring her back to life. And same goes for Snow white.. the only slight difference was that the prince that kissed snow white didnt know she would come back to life. . i always saw it more as a goodbye. its still not gross sence it wasnt like either princes had sex with the dead princesses.
@kyris0 I don't know what you mean by "live corpses", but dead is dead. No hard feelings. I'm just saying I'm making a few points here about the final battle scene in Sleeping Beauty. It's Disney, I know, what do you expect. Again, because of the Nostalgia Critic (not that he's a bad person or anything) I can't stop thinking too realistically about the movies I've grown up with. Speaking of Maleficent, I don't get why Tim Burton is making a whole all about her. What else is there to tell?
@GhostPirate6 It's fine if Prince Phillip goes on a one-man-army for true love. It's just just the three "good" fairies were temporarily helping him. There was no legend out of Sleeping Beauty that made me think that Maleficent was someone else. Again, I said earlier because of the Nostalgia Critic, his views and opinions on films made me think of the movies I grew up with in a different way. Aurora is so dead. Didn't you see her skin from green to normal in the end. Corpse.
@jsteffey88 If you rewatch the scene where the faries put the whole kingdom to sleep, the entire place is bathed in green. They return to their bright colors when Aurora is awakened. And also if you remember earlier in the film, Merryweather weakened Maleficent's deadly curse into a magical ageless sleep. So she's not dead.
@GhostPirate6 Over-thinking movies has it's points as well as its undeserving points. However, one thing I know about colors (most people as well) is that the colors: black and green, mostly in children's animated films, represents evil or death. That's why I thought they put them in some kind of lifeless kind of sleep. Then again, it's Disney; what do you expect. Again, I don't hate Sleeping Beauty; I just over-think on movies growing up as a kid thanks to the Nostalgia Critic.
@GhostPirate6 That's your opinion, of course. But, seriously, I'm talking about colors and it's special meaning to audiences in movies. Black and green usually represents evil or death, which is why I thought Aurora is in a temporary lifeless sleep. Possibly the same for the kingdom.
I adore how they used Tchaikovsky's original music for the orchestral settings and revolved the songs around them (with some creative licence, of course...)
The simple use of laight and shadow in this scene is just stunning...between Phillip looking up in fear at the dragon (3:50) and the Sword of Light turning pitch black after slaying Malificent (5:15)...the color, the sound...so classic.
Whatever else one has to say about Disney, old disney sure knew how to write Faeries. Both the good fairies and Maleficent (who, in the swedish dubb, is reffered to as "Den onda feen" AKA The wicked fairiy) treat all kinds of logic like their henpecked husband with little regard to the consequences for the humans involved.
Even Tinkerbell, who´s the straighest use of the modern fairy ever produced, was vain and jealous to the point of trying to kill Wendy.
"... I might add though, Ms Maleficient, that although these goblin minions are fairly good in archery and operating castle lair defense systems, they are terrible at hand to hand combat - small size, lack dicipline of our finer minion products, screaming like bloody lunatics and has a habit of THROWING the weapons instead of swinging them. Terrible choice, really"
Disney really needs to make a good old fairytale again. I was so excited when they announced a Rapunzel movie - and while Tangled was entertaining, and the visuals were beautiful...it wasn't magical like this.
God damn. Watching this as a kid I never thought years later I would get to fight her in Kingdom Hearts. That dragon has to be one of the most bad ass dragons ever created.

3) Aurora isn't even dead...
4) Kyris0 said live corpse because you said "dead corpse". Which is basically a double negative.

@jsteffey88 Which is unfortunate seeing as Fauna is far from evil.
I usually associate green with vomit.
GhostPirate6 2 months ago
@GhostPirate6 That's your opinion, of course. But, seriously, I'm talking about colors and it's special meaning to audiences in movies. Black and green usually represents evil or death, which is why I thought Aurora is in a temporary lifeless sleep. Possibly the same for the kingdom.

I think Maleficent and Cruella de Vil are sisters. See the family resemblance?

Maleficent is my favorite villain of the good old movies aside from the Queen from Snow White. Sad thing is she doesn't know how to pick henchmen.

Pretty good movie. Too bad the prince and princess were barely even characters. The supporting cast and the witch were more interesting. XD

@Starbat88 The good faeries are totally the heroes of this movie.. but I love it.

I adore how they used Tchaikovsky's original music for the orchestral settings and revolved the songs around them (with some creative licence, of course...)

The simple use of laight and shadow in this scene is just stunning...between Phillip looking up in fear at the dragon (3:50) and the Sword of Light turning pitch black after slaying Malificent (5:15)...the color, the sound...so classic.
lordxur 4 months ago
Whatever else one has to say about Disney, old disney sure knew how to write Faeries. Both the good fairies and Maleficent (who, in the swedish dubb, is reffered to as "Den onda feen" AKA The wicked fairiy) treat all kinds of logic like their henpecked husband with little regard to the consequences for the humans involved.
Even Tinkerbell, who´s the straighest use of the modern fairy ever produced, was vain and jealous to the point of trying to kill Wendy.

[Maleficient visits Minion Recruiting Ltd]
"But they are cheap, right?"
"Well, yes..."
"Good, I will take them"

Disney really needs to make a good old fairytale again. I was so excited when they announced a Rapunzel movie - and while Tangled was entertaining, and the visuals were beautiful...it wasn't magical like this.

Really, this movie could have been awesome! But the reason I didn't liked this movie was its slow-paced climax and zero-personaltied AURORA!!
Please don't take this negatively because the deficiency of this movie was fulfilled in THE LITTLE MERMAID!!
