@Myushifu I'm not exactly sure what the shoes are called. But I know that the top courtesans called Oirans wore those shoes on their "debut" so to speak. So we can assume she is reenacting some scene featuring a courtesan.
I don't exactly know how a real Geisha dance is done. But as far as traditional Kabuki goes, this would not fit that category because after a while Kabuki actors were limited to men only. For both the male and female roles.
I will give the director credit. For the often vague historic accounts available, they pulled this off quite nicely.^^
P.S. That's got to be the tallest geta I've ever seen... O.Ox
Their mizuage has nothing to do with selling sex. Tayu and oiran (geisha looking prostitutes) also has a ceremony called mizuage and that is what we see in this movie.
In this scene Sayuri act as a prostitute, can be seen on the makeup, special shoes and the way she sways them when she walks on the stage. It's a special feature of the oiran/tayu.
It's cultural and traditional Japanese theatre. The wailing and flailing represents her descent into insanity after waiting for her lover that she knows will never return.
@nakata70 wait, isnt it about how she died but wants to stay in this world and is tormented by creatures of the underworld? and aventually falls dead? the dance is shortened but in the Tamasaburo "sagi musume" video thats what it says.
if you don't see the beauty in this, then why did you seach for it? Why did you even watch it? The only dumbass here is you. Obviously, look at all the thumb downs you've gotten. I don't get why people feel the need to try and take away from the video when they don't even like it. People like you need to get a life and move on already.
Was that Sayuri who danced this dance?
and what is these shoes called??

I like this dance a lot. It gives me shivers everytime I watch it. =)
It's very expressive. The movie was wonderful too, even if some people think it's "vulgar hollywood". =D

What is the name of the song on the soundtrack that the snow dance is danced to? I can't find it on iTunes :/

This is not a dance of a geisha.
It's vulgar Hollywood.
The dance of a whore is much more elegant than this: youtube.com/watch?v=8WKaPhvw0-Q
