And people claim he couldn't shoot the jumper early in his career. I don't see it. Every time I've seen early MJ games, he's draining jumpers. He just took less of them because he could dunk instead.
Haha. You're fooling yourself if you think Jordan didn't whine to a ref a time or two. EV-ERY superstar in league history does it. They expect the superstar calls.
No doubt he complained, in face, his glare was famous.
But MJ didn't stop in the middle of plays to bitch at the refs. At least 20 million times in this year's playoffs (by conservative estimates) LeBron, Kobe, Carmello, and others were yelling at the referee while a fast break was going the other direction, or generally play continued.
That's a pretty big difference. Complain when the ball is dead. If you can find an example of MJ quitting on a play to complain, I'd like to see it.
Look at the absurd lateral fade at 3:07. MJ's take off foot covers 6-7 feet fading diagonally. This extreme fade coming from the turn-drive was a regular shot in his repertoire and MJ was equally efficient going both ways. The extreme athleticism allowed him to fade that much distance to get a clean look all the time. No one comes close to having peak athleticism complement peak skill like MJ had naturally.
@hoopsencyclopedia In terms of body control and athleticism I think Derrick Rose pound for pound is just as athletically inclined as Jordan. Rose is only 6'2 but if he was 6'6 he would play very similar to Jordan circa 85 to 90! He does things very similar to Jordan. I'd say he's the smoothest player i've seen since Jordan in my opinion! Go look at any of his reverse layups or slashes to the rim and he gives me goosebumps similar to MJ but nobody is on MJ's level but Rose is Jordan-esque!
I know there are a lot of NBA fans out there who watch the game avidly, but myself having played top level college ball, you can really appreciate how difficult it would be to actually perform like this even in one NBA game, let alone over a career. even the little things he did that go unnoticed amaze me...it seems as though the combination his every attribute combine to make the basketball masterpiece that is Jordan. He is the closest of any player to master the sport.
still cant find a player in the nba that dominates offensively and defensively, the only reason his alltime scoring average and steals average is only at 30.1 ppg and 2.34 spg is because of playing with those Wizards in is late 30's early 40's. i hated that because that messed up his stats even though they still are untouable now. when he retired the 1st time with 3 rings, he had 32.3 ppg and 2.72 steals for his career, nobody to this day has done that
i love the move at 2:25. i always love when he acts like he is going to bring it back out and he takes it back the rim strong. i use that move alot. But i dont dunk on people like he did patrick ewing lol.
I love the NBA from the 80's. Here you have athletic prime Jordan and good old Larry Bird, the guy with ice water in his veins. I can only laugh about the idea that Bird wouldn't be as great in todays so-called athlectic NBA. Bird was never a player who relied on that, he was a killer, an assassin. He'd tell you he hits the game winner in your face just to do exactly that a moment later. Pure badass.
that play is amazing. he changes direction 2 times in 4 dribbles. every stride is long and power, he is in full speed even with the change of direction dribble. it is done within 4 sec. i never know it was such an amazing play from his usual highlight.
and the last dunk too, two dribbles that's it.
even wade and leborn now can kind of do the same, it is not at the same speed, and obviously not the control and the grace.
jordan never beat bird. im not saying that he couldnt but he never go past him in the playoffs. during his championship years he never had the opportunity to face him either. alot of debate that jordans bulls werent the greatest and that the 86 celtics,83 76ers, magics lakers, or the knicks of 1969-70 were better. no respect for jordans team from the sports writters.
although the fans vote jordans 96 team the best in all poles its the sports writters that always discredit jordans teams as one man teams in a watered down era. i disagree with both arguements. jordans era wasnt watered down when he won 72. it was still a tough league. just go through the rosters and compare them to todays league. second jordan didnt have all the greats magic and bird had but he had great role players that could hold up against anyone. rodman best rebounder and pippen best
all around player. pippen and jordan were the two best perimeter defenders of their time and probually of the game. they had a deep bench of specialists like kerr, the best 3point shooter in nba history, and kokoc. the team had great role players that understood the game.jordan best interior player and player of all time, rodman best rebounder, pippens greatness, kerr, kokoc, and harper. that team was deep and it should get more respect from sports writters
Well the bulls of 96 were a well oiled machine, and there won't be a team like that for a long long time. Everyone on the team knew their role and drew confidence from Jordan and Pippens leadership. All role players were able to perform at their optimum level because jordan made them. I can see glimpses of the 96 bulls in this current celtics team, but at the end of the day, jordan is the greatest.
i disagree with u about this current celtic team. i do see similarities like garnets push on other players getting the best out of them and him treating every game as a game 7 and making sure every player is playing hard. i think the bulls team was deeper with more talented players. the bulls big 3 were rodman, pippen and jordan which is far above garnet, allen and pierce. the bulls had more depth and better skilled players. this celtic team is great and im picking them to win it againt but its
not as deep as the 72 bulls team and the 72 bulls team had a better big 3. pippen and jordan would pretty much shut down allen and pierce. rodman would annoy and frustrate garnet. rodman is the greatest rebouder and hed limit garnets influence on the boards and getting position.
i think well oiled machine is a very suitable description. they are smooth as silk in terms of team play. no over dribbling, no selfish play, great ball movement all the time, great movement without the ball all the time, great rebounding and great scoring specialty, great team defense, amazing patience. and yes the nowaday celtics is the only team that kind of remind you of that but not quite there.
all those role players knew what to do and delivered in the clutch. they do get overlooked. another reason why it will be hard to break that record is that there were no major injuries that season. they won a lot of close games.
alot of teams got off to great starts and faded down. the celtics schedule so far has been in their favor. i dont think they can hold up for 82 games with this intensity. i predicting mid 60's
we saw what happened the next year in 97 when the bulls suffered injuries. they lost rodman, kokoc and pippen for periods of time. they still won 69 but had they stayed healthy i think they would have won another 70+ games.
Oh my god 2:55 is so good. He went from the left block jumping fading and ended up shooting it from 8 feet straight on. Amazing. 8 steals in the first half is also amazing. (Jordan got away with a travel at the fade away at 6:26 by changing his pivot foot :(. I've seen worse from Ewing though) Ridiculous game by Jordan.

Watch the exchange around 4:30. MJ tries a fadeaway and is pretty obviously fouled. Instead of pouting to a ref, he sprints back and gets a steal.
Kobe, Wade, Lebron, and the rest of today's players would have been frozen in hystrionics, "Man, he FOULED me, wah wah wah."
Vince would have been so mad he would have sat out the rest of the season.
That's the difference between a guy who wanted to win no matter what, and people who just say they do.

@TBlake34 Please. I love MJ. He is the GOAT, but he bitched to refs. Trust me!

@TBlake34 As a matter of fact, Kobe copied Jordan's disgust toward refs. This is when refs made a bad call.
