I think they should have put Mary Martin, John Rait, Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in a ring and had them sing it out until the last one standing! WOW. Think of it these two MONUMENTAL stage stars against those MAGNIFICENT screen presences! It would be anybody's guess.
Thanks to Jesterimb for posting this. In 1946 my parents took me to see "Carousel," my first Broadway show. Jan Clayton and John Raitt gave us songs for the ages, especially this. Of the hundreds of recordings made since, there is one that, to me, captures both the innocence and drama Ms. Clayton gave us; it is by Honda Minako from her album "TOKI," the last album she competed before she was taken from us by leukemia. The lyric is Japanese and is most beautiful.
Another R & H First Act Love Duet. They solved the problem in Oklahoma with
"People Will Say We're in Love'. The first act NEEDS that beautiful love song but the problem is the first act is too soon for an all out love duet so they came up with the 'If' duet. The lovers play with, in song, the idea of being in love. What genius.
Jan Clayton had SUCH magic. She illuminates the role of Julie far beyond the usual. When "Show Boat" was revived she was the instant choice for Magnolia and a new song was written for her, "Nobody Else But Me." The came Lassie. The blending of dialogue and music in this sequence was and is a Rodgers and Hammerstein masterpiece. As for Shirley Jones, she had and has her own kind of magic, and it has proven enduring.
Mary Martin is Larry Hagman's mother and John Raitt is Bonnie Raitt's father. Wish I could jump into a time-machine and return to that sane era. Post-WWII America were good times.
In my opinion, Shirley Jones was quite over-rated! She had the look and thats what they were casting on, much like in today's musicals. They cast names and faces, rather than people like these two who can both sing and act the part.
*cough* Rodgers and Hammerstein picked her and signed her to a contract back when she was a no-name. It was hardly a matter of fame. She had a beautiful voice, and as for her acting ... well, she kinda sorta won an Oscar. If you can't appreciate her, I am truly sorry for you.

Minorities were better off then too. They could read and they weren't dying from drive-bys.

There are no more stars like John Raitt anymore. And certainly no one who sings like him!
Thank you so much for posting!
