The problem is that Able Turner (Sam Jackson's character) is a deeply unlikeable guy and he knows it. He is jealous of the husband, and wants the love of a wife for himself. Able's felt sense of unlikeability, keeps him single after the loses his wife and lonely. He hides behind his badge rather than look at himself, and grow. Perhaps he needed more time to heal, before returning to work. A a superior officer would know the loss of a spouse is hard, and that time to regroup is necessary.

I saw this movie and thought it was excellent. My wife is black and I am white, but we've not encountered such craziness. We've gotten a few stares from white's at times and an occasional glare from a black male or two, but for the most part we have never had too many people giving us issue. Samuel Jackson did a magnificent job portraying his character and pulled it off with apparent ease. A decent thriller movie.
