  • That was absolutely INCREDIBLE. I've never felt so strongly about seeing anything on youtube as to want to rate it, but this one has mine! You make me jealous.

  • This is seriously great stuff, i need to hear saint stephen. It's a pretty easy song i think it could sound awesome with dual acoustic

Stay tuned, Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • Fantastic

  • I like the Dead version better but this is good!

  • @MrGrevy

    That's the funniest thing I've read in a while. No sh*t! :)

Great cover though and guitar work! The guy on the right could use a bigger bodied guitar instead of that western body unless you guys were going for that dynamic. Sounds great though!

  • Dude Best Cover Of These Song Ive Ever Seen... Great Guitar playing dude.. great licks

  • Dude Best Cover Of These Song Ive Ever Seen... Great Guitar

  • Back in1978 I went to the shady grove in haight ashbury and saw bob hunter

  • i love all your grateful dead covers. i watched so many its so great i dont think ive ever heard a band pull of terrapin live, it was a dangerous move trying terrapin and it shows that you are both excellent musicians as well as guitarists. how bout a ship of fools cover?

  • Excellent job, guys. Bravo!

  • I discovered your version of this . . . what -- two or so years ago? Still hands down my favorite on Youtube and my favorite version of this song (including the Dead's) -- period! Only regret is that the full version isn't available, but what the hell -- tiny complaint. This is a spectacular version.

  • @lordy80011

    Hey lordy,

Thanks so much for your very kind and humbling words of support! This version of terrapin had to be cut off due to youtube time constraints. Actually, we feel that we usually play terrapin much better than this version and have thought of replacing it, but fan support such as yours has kept us from doing so. Thank you so much for checking us out!!

Stay tuned, Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • this is absolutely amazing. any tabs?

  • wow this is really good. what's the tuning? it seems like it's a half step down but I'm not quite sure.

I gave up the 58 Gibson, sad day...

    This song brings me peace....

  • Hey now happyfuzz,

Thanks for the kind comments on this version of Terrapin. We appreciate it. We wish we had a better recording of it, and that it had not been cut off by time limits, but such is life. Too bad about your 58 Gibson!! On a few of our videos (horn, runaway jim, ??) I play my 59 Gibson. Sweet guitars!!

    Thanks again and stay tuned!!

    Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • wow once agin to kick my ass , keep in touch u2 ,, >>>>>.steve

  • Probably one of the best songs ever done. I have heard you guys do other dead tunes fabulously so I was curious how you would pull this one off. Not perfect but well done, such a difficult song to pull off . I'm a fan now.

  • Uhh... I think my first comment didn't work. BRAVO! Nicely done! Thanks for posting

I love the fingering on the instrumental bridges

  • You win. Awesome. Thanks for posting this.

Love the fingering on the instrumental bridge parts.

    Thanks again.

  • BRAVO!!!

    from france

    jerry RIP

  • That surely is the Grateful "DOG!!!!!!!!!"

  • Is that a moe. shirt your wearing ? Any chance of posting any songs by moe. ?

  • Yes it is a Moe. shirt. They are my favorite band these days. We have played some Moe. on and off over the years. Dave picks all of the tunes we cover. Anything is possible. Thanks for checking in and please stay in touch.

    Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • Boo Hoo. Now there will definitely be no Moe for you! Keep it up and we're going to be doing some Barry Manilow.

  • PLEASE DO MOE. COVERS! kyles song would be interesting...

  • Wow. You guys... thats great. As with most Dead songs, my mind started wandering about 7 minutes in... but great job. A wonderfully complex song, indeed. And your dog seemed to think so too

  • i once read bob wiers comment of figgerin out a chord:

he said "find a note that sounds right, then find the notes that go with it" it dont work like that, bob.

    fucker

  • Sure it does

  • how many times when you play, do you get your dogs UNDIVIDED ATTENTION? that would probably please jerry to no freakin end.

  • Hey there Edslides!!

To be truthful, he's not just a dog. He produces our videos, and he's quite demanding actually. If David didn't have a secret stash of cookies for him we would be in big trouble.

Thanks for the kind comment. Awesome to think that anything we do might please Jerry!!

Stay tuned! Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • Beautifully done.

You guys have helped me a lot in learning this song, which I have been working on for a while.

BTW, y'all tuned down to E-flat or my tuner's broken?

  • Good morning HCrider,

At times over the years we have dropped down one half step tuning-wise. I did not check on this video but it is entirely possible. So don't toss that tuner!!

Thanks for checking in with us!

    Best, Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • Hey, thanks for replying, got it all worked out now.

Through a combination of your video, some dubious online tabs, and just using my ear, I have the song down pretty cold. Pulled it out at my band's last rehearsal and EVERYONE jumped on board. So now the whole band is learning to play it, and we will probably make it the centerpiece of our first show, coming up in about 2 months.

  • it was wonderful.

8:09 to the end "moved me brightly".

  • u made me want to play this instrument

  • i love this video so much. one of the best covers ive ever heard or seen. great timing and it stays very true to the original. Is there anyway that this could be tabbed out... or could u possibly tell me where i cna find good tabs, because i would love to learn this and share it with others

  • Hey there,

I do not know of any accurate tab for terrapin (very rarely use tab), and frankly, there is probably a good reason for that. The changes, complexity of chords and certain timings would make it a labor of love for someone to get it right. I learned it in sections. Then Dave and I worked out the duo of parts in similar fashion. If not for his keen ear and patience with me we'd not have got what we did. Good luck with it and thanks checking in!

Stay tuned, Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • seems like you worked hard on this one

NICE .... jerry would be proud

  • Wow....I smiled the whole way through this...im getting chills

  • could you tell me the chord progression and the strum pattern?

  • where u been ?, get bk to me,, bass_catcher

  • Is that a Nija Turtle in the back round for good luck?

  • No, not this time, but the ninja turtles are in three of our videos!!

Thanks for focusing on the key aspects of why we do this!! Have a great day!!

Stay tuned, Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • this is fantastic.. you have a beautiful voice

  • Thanks. What is TWLWMYD?

  • @sneakypower

that's what love will make you do?

  • @sneakypower

"that's what love will make you do"

it's on Jerry's solo album "compliments" w the butterfiles.

it is just a blues (i,4,5) progression but the lyrics and leads Jerry takes are so smooth.

    :) great job you guys

  • wow is all I can say!!! Every single song I have seen you do here on tube has been excellent!!! I love every song you have chosen, be it panic, the dead, phish, etc and am amazed each and every time at how well you play and sing them. would love to see a run for the roses or TWLWMYD by you guys, I think you could rip'em up. Keep on doing what you do, peace, Jeff

  • thats what love will make you do!!!

  • KILLLLLED IT! very nice rendition. Harmonies, solos, melodies chasing melodies. Really enjoyed this. AAAA++

  • Really great guys! I play in a band that does alot of dead tunes but we wouldn't attempt this! you guys are awesome!

  • Wow. That was amazing. You guys are great. This was my cousin's favorite song, and I've been wanting to learn since he passed away. You guys are an inspiration to beable to one day play this song! Thank you.

  • Wow - not bad at all!

Any plans of traveling to Phoenix to perform?

  • none right now. Thanks for checking in on us and for taking the time to comment. We appreciate it very much. Best to you.

Stay tuned, Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • 4 weeks no response ,,wtg ,,keep playin ,,make new music ,plzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Happyfuzzfroggie,

I told my PR people to wake me at anytime in the night if an email came in from you. I will be sure to fire them all! I haven't seen Hugh in a few weeks so we are totally out of practice and unprepared to do a new video. He is, however, coming over tomorrow. With enough drinks, we may film one! It could be awful. Stay tuned and keep in touch!

  • I listen to the full song every time ,, even to the little mess up ,, You guys rule ,,plz do more ,, i have already looked , but nothing better than this song, have more???????

  • AMAZING!!!!!

  • here i am again listening to this version ,, wtg once again guys

  • awseome job, amazing version

    keep on rocking guys

  • Love the family dog pokin his head out at 5:00

  • would it be possible to put a version of the Dead's "Clementine" on youtube?

  • hey guys , me again ,, Taking out the Gibson for an appraisal,,& a work out over Christmas, my family plays, but never this guitar, will keep u guys tuned, pun intended ,,lol ,, Merry , Merry ,,

  • nice work guys! carry on the tune!

  • my gibson is a small body, short neck, I shall check on tag # , i never looked ,,its kinda broken & fragile , i may encase backside in acrylic bath to seal it, its got a hole ,, but everyone who has ever played it, even w/ hole says it sings, thats the verb ,, siiiings,, it holds notes a long time,, get bk tome ,,,

  • Hey now Steve,

Guitars that "sing" always make me smile!! Forgive me if this is obvious, and I do not mean to be pretentious, but... have that old Gibson evaluated by a Luthier or really experienced tech before doing anything to it. Those old timers are all gems, and it sounds like yours is a diamond in the rough!!

I am still frustrated with my 59's tone, and we continue to tweak it "searching for the sound." You can see it the runaway jim video.

Stay tuned!! Best, Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • If U do Pink Floyd acoustic, I would love to listen,, anything OLD

  • hey guys , me again,, listening again ... u guys, remind me of Imperial Beach, near SD, bk in the 80's,,U got by on a slice of pizza & good tunes. Man, I was poor bk then,,,but the 'cid was good & I was young.... keep in touch guys, Steve

  • This is what Tenacious D was talking about in their tribute to the greatest song in the world.

  • Minus the whole episode with the devil. I Love that album!

  • very nice.

  • Instant inspiration guys. Surley the best acoustic dead covers I've ever heard. Thank you so much.

  • maybe not a Les Paul ,, but A Gibson '58 all the same,, ss

  • Ha ha... that's funny stuff. I told you my 59 wrong too! It's not an L-1, it's an LG-1.

There should be a serial number somewhere in the body; from that you should be able to get an accurate ID on the model. Is it a big body acoustic?? Some of those old Gibsons are amazing. Happy TDay. Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • ty fer getting bk to me ,, my '58 is a Les Paul Lead Country acoustic short neck,,kinda beat up, pick up guard worn ,, but servicable ,,sings like a hummingbird , I live in Massachusetts, anytime U up in Salem way,, U have a home...move me brightly

  • best listen in a long time, I bet U can make my '58 Gibson acoustic sing, this song makes me want to learn to play it better. contact me if u would like to play it,,bass_catcher66@yahoo

  • Sure, I'd love to play it...Just exactly how would that take place?

  • What model is that 58? The dark acoustic I play on some of our videos (Horn and Runaway Jim) is a 59 L-1. My tech and I have been tweeking it lately, trying to bring out more tone. It's a sweetheart. Thanks for checking in and stay tuned!!

    best, Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • This is exactly what me and my buddy do all day when we hang out is play terrapin ...been working on it for a long while too

  • Hey fellas - this is still my favorite tune to listen to while working online -- your rendition of this song is simply fantastic! When are you going to release your version on mp3 or audio cd or something? I really love this version. I wish I could get a quality version to play in my car...!

  • Thanks so much for your kind words!! Very humbling and much appreciated. We have been trying to sort out how to release some of this stuff, stay in the spirit of the music, and not take anything away from the songwriters. We will keep you posted.

When we do figure it all out the tunes will not be shortened or cut off to meet youtube time restrictions either!

Thanks so much again, and stay tuned!

    Best, Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • Definitely pulled it off.

  • Inspiration... moves me brightly

  • ssooo good! wow

  • makes me want to cry

  • It's that bad?

  • Every time i get on utube the first thing i punch in is handmade groove. Love the martin. You guys wouldnt tab out the intro for me?

  • This is truly amazing guitar playing. Great cover guys....one of my favorite Dead songs....and you guys do it perfect!

  • you guys are doing the best acoustic dead covers i've heard anywhere, love it! one i would like to hear is 'mountains of the moon'.. whaddya say?

  • Tafelgetrank,

That is truly one of my all time favorites, and believe it or not, we actually play that one! I don't know when we'll get around to it because we have two that we plan to do first, but I appreciate the reminder.

    Keep in touch,

    David

  • Very nice work guys. Inspiring, makes me wish I could play better!

  • i love you guys

  • Makes me think the original was done in accoustic.

It brings out a classical quality, not just"unplugged". I heard Robert Hunters complete accoustic version with one guitar which was a rhythm/lead mix- bard style.

With two guitars, the classical aspect grounds the whole piece. As strange as this may sound, musically, the electric doesn't make sense to me.- crazy I know. Especially from someone who got his start listening with Anthem of the Sun and Live Dead!

  • Hey there,

We really enjoy looking for electric pieces of music from these great bands and finding a read for them acoustically. Dave has the ear really. Half the time he'll bring a tune to the table and I'll laugh at that idea... Shortly thereafter it is in the rotation. He's a genius.

Trey and Jerry are / were extraordinary players in either genre, and it shows in their compositions.

    Thanks for the comment!!

    Best, Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • Hugh,

You are a golden living room rock god and I'm blushing. STOP it! Ok, you don't have to!

    <3,

    me

  • Where did you here Robert Hunters acoustic version?

  • Can you guys do Robert Hunters version with Jack O' Roses?

  • very good

  • how bout a wharf rat?? Great stuff

  • thanx guys. nice reading of a great song.

once more, a little slower this time. you just brought out the ocd in me.

    "must......learn..this...........song"

  • What a soulful, faithful audiance! Rock on!

  • Not only is this a great rendition, but I give you guys further kudos for miking the raw acoustic guitars instead of plugging them in with effects

  • wow this is really really awesome.. where can i find the tabs for this song to learn it

  • That's really beautiful, guys. You really got the whole spirit of the piece without any supplemental pieces. It's a nice, clean version. 5 stars!

  • That was an amazing version of that song.....I look forward to checking out your other vids.

  • Why is it when I'm playing this, it sounds way off. I know you said you play a half step down sometimes, but I thought I read that you're in standard on this one. Anyways, that run you do on the Dm->Am change is great. I can't figure it out though, because what I'm playing sounds so off! Is that just the arpeggio? Anyways guys, Im lovin it.

  • According to my tuner, WE ARE NOT in concert pitch. The best I can tell, we are almost tuned down a half step :(. If you give me an approximate time in the song I can try to share some insight.

  • at approx 1:40 and 1:58... you repeat it a couple times again.

  • As best I can tell, you may be referring to a little embellishment I do over a Dm, C, G, F progression. If I'm correct, play a D minor (pull of the 1st fret and pick the B and G strings. For the C chord, play the root note (A string 3rd fret) followed by the D string open followed by a hammer-on onto the 2nd fret followed by an open G string. Then repat that figure on a G chord (every thing moved up one string) and finish on an F chord.

  • Wow I have listened to a few of your songs, and while I have never heard anything by the grateful dead I look forward to listening to the original of this song. You guys are an extremely talented duo. At times when you were soloing together it was hard for me to tell who was playing which part. Keep up the good work and please keep the tunes flowing.

    -Jeremy

  • Very Kind words Jeremy - Thank you. While David probably fell off his chair in horror, I am humbled that you couldn't tell our solos apart. Please stay tuned and in touch!

    Cheers, Hugh - Handmade Groove

  • I'm not particularly a fan of the Dead, but this song is prog-rock enough to peak my fancy...

  • you guys are always out of tune,, please tune be4 you post this

  • Hmmm??? 87,131 total views, 265 subscribers and average rating of 4.5 on our 34 videos...when along comes a 19 year old baby boy named BUBBA (who was 6 when Jerry died) who says we're "always out of tune." Funny, you must have golden ears, seeing how 87,000 people failed to hear this.

I'd like you to consider not listening if it is so displeasing to you, BUBBA.

  • no, they are in tune

  • "close enough for jazz"

    -stan freberg

  • i can't say how much of an inspiration this is for me to keep playing. such a beautiful rendition of a beautiful song, thanks a lot.

  • Excellent playing guys, what tuning are you using ?

  • Thanks. The tuning is standard, but we may be a few cents off of A 440 Hz.

  • We often play in "Hugh flat." :)

Thanks for the kind words. We appreciate it very Much!!! Hugh

  • You guys are an inspiration to dead fans everywhere. You have such a chemistry together and shows through the way you play. Just wondering exactly how long you have been playing together? Peace and Jerry we miss you.

  • Hugh and I have been playing together for about 10 years. Unfortunately (very unfortunately) we live 23 miles from each other and have work schedules that are prohibitive so we don't get to play as often as we'd like. He's still a pretty good best friend! We do have fun when we play. Thanks for the support.

  • You guys r great.

  • AWSOME! Any Allman Bros Covers?? Desdemona??

    Kudos!!

  • right on fellas - nice job of a fckn beautiful tune. Love the story in this tune

  • Damn impressed, that's the best cover I've heard short of RatDog, but they're kinda cheating anyway...
