  • Wonderful wonderful, I have searched for this song since hearing it on an Audio tape, yes a tape, do you remember them? they were what we played before C.D.s

So, I'm excited at finding this

  • Gt Grandfather and Grandfather came from Bawnboy, love the County and visit from Manchester as often as I can

  • if your in the area or online tune into THE GREEN SCENE on lmfm radio(louth meath fm), this song is always played and other dermot songs

  • Cavan Girl was written by the songwriter Thom Moore, who founded the bands Pupkinhead and Midnight Well. Thom has written many more well respected and favored songs.

  • Derek was on radio one on st pat day on ronan collins

  • Just want to thank all the people who stuck up for me regarding my post here! You people are the reason I keep going back every year!! My parents emigrated from Leitrim and Roscommon back in the late 20's. My father died when he was only 45 years old and my mother raised her 4 children with a true love of her heritage for which we are grateful. I have done the same with my children. As they say "there is good and bad in every culture. I love Ireland as much as I love America!

  • Beautiful song, sang beautifully

  • i only found derek mccormack through this song. definitely one of the most underrated of irish singers. he has a purity to his voice that is not common amongst irish balladeers. very like paul brady in that respect. may he rest in peace.

  • Beautiful song regardless of who sings it. Thanks for posting this version.

  • what a beautiful song god blessed u derek with a beautifull voice

  • i love this song, maybe the best song ever

  • BEAUTIFUL DEREK.GOD BLESS YOU

  • What a beautiful, pure voice. R.I.P. Derek. You will always be with us, as long

as we listen to your voice in song.

  • Hey, do you know the song he sings about a wedding day? lovely song :)

  • @cavancross As my maiden name is. It's not taken from the county. I forget the Irish name for it. I have it in a book of names, but that's all packed up.

Do you or anyone else know its origin.

  • Absolutely brilliant

  • As Irish people we are so fortunate to have this great archive of Music and Song.

The talent withn these shores over the years is second to none, I think of people like the late great Luke Kelly, Derek MacCormack, Sinead 0'Connor and Phil Coulter. Awesome talent. Thanks for the Memories..

    Patrick.

  • On his way to Cavan, he should have made the right turn at Cartwright's Rock and headed to Cornafean for a few pints in McSeains

  • Will you changed the subject please, stublue44 should not of said that about Barbara925 it was wrong. But lets move on, thank you very one who listened to Cavan Girl, and who Commented on the song. Decky.

  • stublue, I could say a lot of things, which aren't permitted on here, but let's just say that YOU are an embarrassment to all that is true and pure of the Irish. I'm from Clare and often holiday in Cavan, and they love Barabara, but hate the likes of you

  • stublue44, Geez man, don't you think your outburst and verbal assault on Barbara was really uncalled for. Barbara posted a decent comment unlike you, it's people like you who we're REALLY sick of. I bet my bottom dollar that it's only you who dislikes Barbara, not the decent people of Cavan town. you are a sad person but there's thousands like you on here, so your at home...

  • I've been to Cavan nearly every year for 43 years and I still shed a few tears when we leave! My husband's family is from Killeshandra and yes the signpost to Cavan Town says 12 miles!! The Kilmore Hotel is still there ....and they have a beautiful 4 star hotel in Ballyconnell called the Slieve Russell.

  • @Barbara925 That's fantastic! I've never actually noticed that sign in all the years I've lived in Cavan. You're very welcome here any time Barbara - 'cead mile failte' as we say around here

  • Hi i'm from the derries and i'm looking to get in contact with people from around the town. If anyone wants to get in contact with me or call by my house, please do. I'm on facebook and bebo if anyone want to add me, feel free.

  • my dads from killeshandra......up the boyles. i never forget to listen to this song before i go to bed.

  • Im a cavan man ;)

  • great song and sang lovely

  • Listening to this great song I'm not sure how the following line goes!...

Is it 'Each red coat leaf around me seems to colour all her hair' OR 'Each red coat leaf around me seems the colour of her hair'...

I'm hearing it as the latter...

    Either way very beautiful...

  • Hearing that Derek is dead has completely shocked me, always loved this song and his wonderful voice. Legend.

  • Anybody have a video of Derek singing 'Grace' as he was by far the best at singing that song and many others?

  • I just wondered if there is video footage of this performance?, I would love to have this on dvd...

  • By the way folks, Derek sings "For it's twelve long miles around the lake to get to Cavan town".

How far is it from Killishandra to Cavan town?.

I was in Cavan once in my lifetime, well actually I'm still alive (so i've been told) so I may get to go there again :)

I think it was the Kilmore Hotel we were at, we had lunch there on our way up from Dublin airport having flown in from France, Cavan seems to be a real nice place the towns people are nice and friendly. Cheers for posting the song.

  • I didn't know Derek McCormack had passed away, very sad, he was a very talented singer with an extrodinary voice, he sings this classic to perfection. He was one of the best! R.I.P. Derek.

  • I've always considered this song a true Irish classic, an Irish love ballad performed here with excellence by Barleycorn, I find it an evocative and emotional song, Paddy Reilly does a fantastic rendition of this song also, It's one of my favourite Irish songs...

Anyone ever hear of Brian Coll?, the forgotten legend, once Ireland's formost music performer, a fantastic singing voice, legendary in the 1970s showband scene throughout Ireland...

  • This song means alot to me my nana has just died god bless her soul and this song was playing as i was carrying her down the aile to the herse and she was from cavern herself so this song realy fits her discription thankyou for putting this up on youtube, Rest in peace nanny bridie xxxxxxxx ill always love you xxxxxxxx

  • Derek Mc Cormack, the almost forgotten legend.

  • I hear what your saying my Friend, no one with such a wonderful voice like this should be allowed to be forgotten, the melodic voice of Derek McCormack will be around for a very long time...Cheers my Friend. Your comment was excellent.

  • great voice

  • A marvelous song ... last summer I drove that road, from Killeshandra to Cavan, a beautiful road ... and what lovely, friendly people in Cavan. I didn't find my girl there, but I'm sure she's waiting for me

  • where is derek mccormack from just out of interest

  • Derek McCormack passed away Friday 30th January 2005, he is sadly missed, but his songs live on.

  • Derek was from Drogheda, Co. Louth

  • Derek died suddenly in Jan 2004.

    He is sorely missed

He had the voice of an angel and that's where he sings now

    Miss you cuz!

  • @fearghus66 Derek passed away suddenly while performing on an Irish Festival Caribbean Cruise and died in January 2004 at age 51. his was rare talent, and he is sorely missed

  • my father is from killeshandra and this song brings tears from my eyes every single time i hear it....UP THE BOYLES FROM CAVAN!!!

  • You Irish sure are an emotional people, nothing wrong with that. My grandpa was Irish, Irish Protestant from Yonkers NY if you can believe that!

  • such a beautiful song

  • I miss Derek and his beautiful voice so much. Slainte

  • What a lovely, lovely version of a gorgeous song. Barleycorn have long been one of my favourites - I have never known a Barleycorn version that did not do justice to the original.

Machree01, thank you for adding this. People who have the time and skill to share beautiful tunes with us deserve our heartfelt gratitude.

Rest in peace, Derek, your beautiful voice is missed.

  • This is one of my favourite songs too and has has been stuck in my head for many years.

An old mate used to play it in his Irish group in Flanagans Apple, Liverpool some years ago with a whistle accompanyment.

  • I love this song!!

  • This song was written by a Vietnam vet ,that spent some time in Ireland..

  • Does anyone know how I can get hold of this recording for my wedding in about 3 weeks time. I am getting wed in Australia but I am from Killeshandra and have yet to get the music etc to my Samoan singer.

Please any help would be appreciated - even the name of the album it;s from then I can buy it. Help if you can Thanks

  • Cavan girl is on A Song For Ireland - google it and you will be able to buy it online.

Scary thought a Samoan singing it right enough!!

Good luck and all the best for your big day.

    Hail hail

  • All the way from Canada! The spirit of those days lives on in all our hearts & will do forever. Owen, your comments about Eamonn have touched my heart and brought a tear to my eye, he was indeed one of the bravest people I have ever known, and also the best husband in the world to have had for 26 short years !!!! To know that his legend lives on for him, Derek, Charlie Clark and too many other musicians who died too soon, would have been an honour for them. Alex

  • Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for posting!!

  • Derek past away in 2005 aged just 51, he spent the last few years touring with the Furey's. I met him after a gig where he played this song and he was an absolute gentleman. A very sad loss.

  • Yes, a lovely tune...I could listen to this song every day. Thanks for posting!

  • Lovely song Thanks for posting.

  • What a singer Derek was, and The Barleycorn, where did they ever go ?

  • I think they have just released a new album. irishmusicmailDOTcom.

  • They Broke up a few years ago. My brother Denis O' Rourke (Eamon O' Rourke was in the Jolly Beggarmen.) went to Australia, John went to America and started the New Barleycorn, Paddy went with the Ramblers and is now out on his own. Derek went to the Fureys and then sadly passed away (what a loss). Hope this helps

  • Well Done On Posting The Great Barleycorn Group, They Were Not Just Outstanding In Music , They Were My Great Friends For Many Years , My Dear Friend Derek RIP Sang At My Wedding Along With Patsy W, Mandy And Many Others Till Day Light In Kinnity,Also Rembering Eamon O Rourke RIP ,The Bravest Person I Ever Knew . OR

  • Owen, Mary - Eamo's sister here. What a lovely comment to make about Eamo. You are right he was very brave and lets be honest very mad. And just to say Your wedding night was the only time ye stayed up drinking and singing. If everyone had such good memories, they would be lucky people.
