I always preferred this to the A side. Got it when it first came out. My original 7'' still plays perfectly, over 30 years on. Can't say that for some CD's that I own. They seem to be fucked after about 5 years or so. Vince's songs are so odd because he used to write the words first, and then fitted the tune round them. He told this to 'Smash Hits' Magazine in 1981.
@chubbylegend You are right and countless others too. Saw that knob Calvin Harris recently claiming he was leading the way in new music or some such dogdoo, yet Ive yet to hear him do anything DM hadnt already don't by 1983 and only a fraction of what they did do
I like it now and I liked it when it came out, though it just occured to me it sounds a bit like Sudeten Creche (or is that the other way 'round? ^^,) watch?v=WPRkrn4-AHM
Another on of my favourite tracks, just got it on 45. I wonder what DM would have sounded like if Vince Clarke had stayed in the band with Alan Wilder still joining in 1982.
i wonder what DM would have sounded like if Clarke hadn't left .....thank god he did .....
martin gore and alan wilder took over and made DM become one of the most succesful acts of the apst 30 years . Under the influence of Clarke DM woulndn't have sounded any better than crappy Yazoo , that in fact , disappeared after releasing a few albums .
WIlder was the one who brought MUSICIANSHIP and CREDIBILITY wihin DM
@alanwilder81 Crappy Yazoo? Not with a voice like Alison Moyet's, their music still sounds fresher than a lot of "crappy" stuff today, and more memorable than Erasure.
@alanwilder81 I saw an interview where Dave was so glad that he didn't have to sing "Only You". That would've been their next single with Vince. Imagine Dave singing that one...he could do it but it would've changed history or something.
@marianotrecaman I believe it was on the Remasters DVD Documentary to the making of either Speak and Spell or A Broken Frame. All of them are worth getting if you don't have them.
Actually WIlder had pretty much zero say when Martin Gore did "A Broken Frame", and he didn't start to become a factor until "Construction Time Again".
Btw, Yazoo's two albums do contain several high quality pop songs, which present day critics regard pretty highly. Under Erasure Vince Clarke sure kept them successful for over 20 years.
Now, DM wouldn't have changed anyway unless they decided to change their sound a little to be able to appeal to millions of Americans.
Another way of seeing it is that following U2's huge success in the USA, Depeche Mode decided to make their sound a little bit more "rock stadium" like.
You must also know the fact that Duran Duran sold more records in the 80's (proves commercial succes is a shitty measurement of quality), so DM hardly were a "successful act" until Music For The Masses and the Violator, which made them a legitimate "MTV act".
You can also than Anthony Corbijn's videomaking for their fame...
For me, even when I heard the songs for the first time, Depeche's older songs always seemed timeless, but this one seems to have a real classic 80's feel to it... I don't know what it is though...
I know Vince was in Depeche Mode at the time of this track but this a very unlike vince track and to me its the best DM song of this era and hints how good DM could be without the Chirpyness of Vince's Input.
probably my favourite song that clarke wrote while in dm.

One of the best b-sides ever made! The "Ice machine" is (together with "The sun and the rainfall") my all time-fav from Depeche Mode.
