The cox .049 was bulletproof. The horrible engines were the testors .049s. You could literally burn them up by over-revving them if you ran them a tad too lean.
@rickcain2320 I beat the absolute hell out of mine, it was about the only surviving piece of my model plane after a couple years! But the cox motors did run great, took tons of use and really made good power, the cox planes were my favorite, I had a PT-19 and loved it!
@956Joeboy Radio control was not only rare back then it was expensive! The steering on all the cox cars like that, the dune buggy, Jeep, and several others was adjustable to go in either direction, they also made drag racers that ran on a guide string with the engine being geared directly to a wheel. Those went straight, and i think they might have had some kind of kill when they reached the end.
@Oldbmwr100rs I got the Funny Car. Ran it inside the house and the loudness, heat, smoke and odor really scared me out of my wits! I didn't expect it to act that way and the exhaust was burning my eyes. I almost tossed it out the three story window to shut it off, but it finally ran out of fuel. I was very "shaky" ever since then, and always have been when starting up a Cox .049. Took me many years to get over it.
I collect the old gas powered cars and airplanes and I have a Cox Sportster Trike Chopper in metal flake purple that is New In a perfect Box that I bought from a collector back in 1989 for $25.00!! I also had one when I was a kid. They had a similar drive train and pull start as the Dune Buggy and weren't very fast but cool none the less.
@26marbay Hi, I meant to respond to your comment earlier. I have detailed photos of a mint Cox Trike on my website (see this video description for the address/url). Once there, search for Cox Trike.
Hey, so cool! I just broke my old car out and got it running. Check it out. Forgot, they called it the Sandblaster!! just saw that on one of your comments!
Beautiful, sure sounds like a Cox 049. Flown control line many times on one but didn't know these car models existed.
Yea sure it will speed up just as the fuel runs out, it's getting leaner and leaner. Might get a bit hot if it ran that fast throughout! Nice video, thanks.
@randomthoughtsbypi The steering was probably lost long ago. My friend has one that is in better shape with the steering, but it's in mint condition and for display only.
That is so cool! I have the blue Cox Van, and it's the RC model. For some reason, alot of the old Cox remotes no longer work properly (I have heard this from others and my Shrike remote does not work either). Anyways, I rigged up an old nicad, receiver and a servo and affixed it to the steering linkage and voila! a remote controlled van! Well, remote steering control not throttle obviously. Great fun. I have to rebuild that .049 and fire that up again, you insprired me.

Where is the steering? They came with a pneumatic steering device that worked bellows that controlled the front wheels.

They were made during the 1970's and today are collectors items. So you can try ebay or various collectors forums.
