Such personal fabrication machines would do much good for the world, but it would be no world as it is today. To introduce such a device today would destroy the economy completely, but then a new economy might unfold based around regulation of this technology, as in to who can replicate what.
CRISIS... Natural Balance is at stake. Every invention raises questions, and todays actions, todays culture is showing we wont handle merging technology reasonably.
firstly if they create these devices they then need to establish a one world government and abolish money all together then all of the replicators need to be programmed not to be able to produce anything that can be used as a weapon otherwise the dictators of the world will mass produce equipment for their army hence this possible future can never happen and apart from that those individuals who control the world wont allow it to happen.
I love everything about this topic! Nano technology - what the future holds. Exciting, awesome and a pity i'm going to be long gone when it hits reality. More programs like this please beeb.
Oh and bring back 'tomorrows world' too.
AND seriously consider re-running the old school 'tomorrows world' for late night reminiscing. Cheers.

Yeah, I wrote that comment before the programme was broadcast. When I watched I saw Ray Kurzweil saying almost exactly the same thing. :)
