Great job! What wood have you used, did you fill it to the top. was it started with just paper and small pieces of wood, would a firelighter be ok to use?
Its definately much safer than the standard high pressure retort, but not near the volume, I wouldnt recommend it for blacksmiths like myself, but for everyone else like the home cook, firework maker, powder maker and standard guy whos bored, I would suggest this
I've just had a go, filled to the top with ash, burning for 2.5 hours before sealing the top.Very good results. Much easier than following the pit method.

Did you also seal off the air vent at the bottom of the barrel after the three first hours?

I have done it with a very large Dakoat hole and sealed it off with a sheet of tin and dirt, this seems a lot more effecient.
It was not worth my effort for blacksmithing my blades, this may be a bit better.
