personal opinion, simon represents mental health issues, his line i live in the weak and wounded makes sense, this is when people are more susceptable to developing mental health problems, when u are extremely stressed, like gordon, more evidence is when simon talks about mary killing her family in this video, he say" mary wanted to do it",, that implys that she was not forced in any way which u would expect if she was possessed by something, "simon" lives in us all but is only evident in some.
A true horror film. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about how twisted this movie gets. This is for patient and sophisticated viewers that don't need a loud noise or a blood splatter every ten seconds to give them a thrill. This builds on suspense and grips you as the details unfold. If you can't hold a train of thought for over an hour you're not going to like or even understand this movie, even though it's not hard to get, it's horror, and the gripping part is that it's close to real.
MAClamaire -- What? Hunh? Sorry, Simon is not "insanity personified" ... it is a demonic being that latches onto the weak and wounded. The same demon that latched onto Mary, later latches onto Gordon. The voice in their heads is a singular voice... Simon.
@mercury199runner Lol, and next you'll tell us "The Exorcist" isn't scary for the same reason??? The story clearly revolves around an entity that possesses "weak and wounded" people, call that entity whatever you want, just not insanity... because it's not that.
This is what true horror is it is a genius idea horror begins in the mind and that is where it brews so if you use fear to create fear, human insanity, than you produce true horror. What we truly fear is not the monsters on the outside but those on the inside.
I was a sickly child and I know the dark spirit entered me. Now I can't stop being a pervert. Help me. On second thought, don't help me. I love being a pervert.
To me real horror films are where nothing much ostensible happens but the whole feeling of latent dread that culminates is happening through the actors, setting and the story direction. It is supposed to immerse the viewer in that it could really happen, and thus connect in some way. Horror is always best when it gets under your skin and sits in your mind.
Simon is insanity personified. He is representing the insanity that lives in people who are considered insane. Sometimes when people go insane they simply have no control and insanity takes over. Just as Simon says "Hello, Mary" he says "Hello Gordon". You also here in this clip Simon saying "Do it Mary" just as he says "Do it Gordon". Both Mary and Gordon went insane and they both suffered from that voice in their head, Simon, who is really just insanity personified. Just my opinion, don't hate
@MAClamaire My WMG was that he's the Devil. You know how a lot of psychotic people are driven by "The Devil told me to do it?" I was thinking that may be what "Simon" actually is.
Simon is not an another personality, demon or anything like that. It's just a part of human nature, nothing more. Anybody can be a psycho. All you need is to put certain pressure on a person. It's not too hard to break those, who are weak.
@ 619badazz13 I the deleted scenes and alternate ending they originally had subplot of a homeless woman living at the hospital who you thought might be killing the crew making the movie even more a whodunit, but really she's just witnessing the horrible things the real killer does, and ultimately kills byt hitting him the head with a club type thing, but they had to drop the subplot, and the real ending is much less brutal than the alternate one.

This movie scared the fuckin shit out of me 2 days ago when I was all alone in my room with the lights turned out and it was probally around midnight...
I've been inside Danvers Asylum before, at night, with 7 friends of mine all of us packing handguns, I was packing a black Colt .45 ACP Government Issue 1911 Semi-Automatic Agent Pistol that shoots 9-Round clips, Drawn at ALL TIMES inside these places...ya see some crazy shit...
@IMaDEM0N You must be retarded. What are you gunna shoot, other than your buddies? A ghost?!? Get real you tart. I live in England and have been in West Park and Hellingly (google them, PROPER asylums) stoned off my face and I was fine, you just sound like a woman. Why do you need a gun you prick?
I'm quite sure that the "Doc" (not Simon, but the doctor) in the recording is David Caruso (Phil). I wonder if this has anything to do with the story line?
I usually hate horror films, but, this one was really great. The set, itself, was like a character, or something. I had to watch it after I read that Christian Bale approached the director, for The Machinist, after seeing this...so, was much curios. I definitely get why he wanted to work with him...
Simon may come from Simon Magus said variously to be a founder of Gnosticism, a demon, a sorcerer. He represents a dark, deep undercurrent that is vast but unseen and has always been among us from the beginning of all things.
This was a really good movie. I do work from time to time at a large mental health facility. For a time, there was an empty building similar to the one in this movie. I never saw anything but there were times when it would get to you. You'd just feel really depressed all of a sudden. I don't care much for that place.
I'm not much for horror films, but this one captured my attention once my friend rented it and i watched it. I usually don't get scared from movies, but this one scared the shit out of me. The BEST horror film i've seen so far.
"In reviewing the film for the 2003 edition of The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, Ellen Datlow takes the view that Simon is not necessarily an alternate personality of the former patient Mary, but a malignant genius loci.[5] Her review also points out that the deleted scenes included on the DVD help bring out an added understanding of the narrative.

Everyone has that one inside him, but just the "weak and wounded" feel the need to save themselfes so much, that Simon awakes and kills. Nothing with a demon, it is the darkest side of the human mind.
gordy is schizo like mary. simon tells him to kill everybody. his wife was gonna have a kid or something and he was stress and he killed her, but only remember hitting her. thats why theres pics. the coins were from the burnt bodies of the dead patients of long ago in the furnaces. gordy lobotomized one of the guys who had found the coins. the guy put coins everywhere. Everybody saw gordy. the lady in the deleted scenes is a homeless person.
I lived the next town over and every year at Halloween cops would come into the schools and tell kids not to venture up there because the parts you could break into were haggard and some floor might break away and you'd never be heard from again. Lame scare tactic but the security people up there were pretty cool about letting us take Pictures during the day of the building and surrounding area.
I thought "Billy" and the "Princess" were pretty damn scarey the way she just changes over to them! I watched this yesterday, I'd never heard of it before and didn't expect much but it was genuinely creepy.. And that poor guy just wandering around "What are you doing here?".. Eeek!
Excuse me Mr. I'm a dope, Please tell me when "back in the day was"? I have heard my grand daddy say that. You must be a hillbilly. One from dem dare hills. lmao
I love this film. Does anyone know the voice actor of Simon? The only information is that it is possibly the same actor as Mary Hobbes... But it can't be! :( Simon is too much like a boy. Can anyone help me out? Simon sounds hot :( I don't want it to be a girl.
how come the Simon voice sounds exactly like a man when it's supposed to be apart of a woman..lol..just because someone might have a different personality doesn't mean their voice can necessarily change completely to sound like a different gender..well, ya i know it adds a creepier effect to the movie when it sounds like a male..anyway, what are the words at the end? it's hard to hear with the other sounds
simon isnt a split personality, hes supposed to be something possessing mary hobbes and gordon, like a demon of some kind. "but mary wanted to do it, so she did it"
Actually there have been cases in some studies, where the person's voice has changed to an extent.& its not a demon of sorts, what the movie is basically saying is that, like Mary,Gordon also has another personality, another mind, another "person" that wants to do bad things when he is hurt and at his weakest. Thats why at the end Simon says,"I live in the weak and the wounded." Saying that alot of us..when we are in a depressed or hurt state..have a Simon in us..That wants to do bad. Lol.Some.
I went there before it was torn down I could not go in but the security guard was nice enough to guide me around so I could look at it. I drove from Bristol Ct so he let me walk around outside and look at the graves. it was really sad to see all those stone markers with just numbers on them like the people buried there were just nothing.
There are still a few abandoned mental hospitals out there - a couple have been preserved as historical sites but are locked to the public. Most of them are being systematically destroyed - the erasure of the sordid past of the mental health industry. I know a notorious one that was in my city, Tallahasse, FL, was recently demolished. It was called Sunnydale I believe.
Whoever made the movie is obviously knowledgeable about psychology, perhaps not recent psychology but at least psychotherapy theories and the history of mental health in the US. State mental hospitals like the one in the movie were in actually closed down en masse because of the satanic cult controversies - they could not be maintained when funding was drained due to lawsuits. The "Protector" type personality is considered an archetype in Jungian psychotherapy and is usually .....
the one responsible for violent acts committed by patients with severe DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly Multiple Personality Disorder). Considering this, it is likely that both Mary and Gordon suffered from severe and sensitive DID, triggered by very minor events of trauma, with Mary, it was this event with her brother, with Gordon, his wife spilling boiling water (or was it some other substance?) on him. Gordon, however, unlike Mary, maintained only two personalities.
Greatest horror film, should have a place beside the classics like The Shining. Congratulations to Brad Anderson and his whole crew. For me, this is a movie that really stood up among so many other great horror movies. It is a masterpiece, pure and simple.
Definately. It is very much like the shining in that its bleak, plays on the mind and has that disturbing quality to it. Again, another buried treasure.
Simon is what makes the whole movie what it is. I will admit that to me Simon is the best character; not because of what he did but on how he can be so calm. He tells the doctor exactly what happened without batting an eyelash.
This movie was nicely done! Thank you for posting it up!
@dobby335 it managed to be creepy without having to throw ghosts at you, which I appreciated, I have the DVD & if u go to Bonus Content & watch the alternate ending, but I've been IN the abandoned Danvers State Hospital before & they only used a TINY piece of it, & I also broke into the abandoned 1 in Worcester, MA & me & my 5 friends who do that with me go in ARMED & it's myself, I'm a Specially trained Police officer, my friend who's a US Army MP that just got back from combat....
its a good movie but i wasn't scared when i watched it by myself...im a horror movie freak though...the only movies that scared me and had me thinking were...REC and THE EXORCIST..!
this film never got what it deserved here in the UK. i LOVE this film. i have a fascination about abandoned hospitals or asylums so this film just rock!
Does anyone know who it is that does Simon's voice? I'm dying to know and I can't find any info on it. It's so wonderfully sinister, I don't think i'll ever forget the closing line.
i love this movie so much. It's creepy but not too creepy. It messes with your head and makes you think things that arent there. It's awesome. One of my top favorite movies.
If Hank was seen walking around more (without us knowing it's him) This would have been even scarier but the finished product does a lot of justice to itself
thanks for the lecture Ace, but I prefer "asylum" or "lunatic asylum" simply because it sounds better. You sound pretty defensive about the name, were you a patient there or something?
It was known as Danvers State Hospital as well as Danvers State Insane Asylum. It was a psychiatric hospital so it functioned more as a asylum. Either way.
I have been a horror fanatic for years, and by now I almost never get even the small jitters while watching horror films. But this one, there was something too menacing and truly eerie about this film that stays with me still to this day! Maybe because the case of Mary Dobbes is true!

It was boiling water. But then again, it could have also been the dog barking or his baby crying.

Greatest horror film, should have a place beside the classics like The Shining. Congratulations to Brad Anderson and his whole crew. For me, this is a movie that really stood up among so many other great horror movies. It is a masterpiece, pure and simple.
marciopasiotto 2 years ago 4
Definately. It is very much like the shining in that its bleak, plays on the mind and has that disturbing quality to it. Again, another buried treasure.

Wish I could have had the chance to explore Danvers by myself., What a place....love those old asylums.

I love this movie.
Simon is what makes the whole movie what it is. I will admit that to me Simon is the best character; not because of what he did but on how he can be so calm. He tells the doctor exactly what happened without batting an eyelash.
This movie was nicely done! Thank you for posting it up!

Scariness part is Mike Dijital trying to make money from "Danvers items" on ebay! In reality its items he finds in other places!

The scariest part in this movie when Hank is taking away the coins. O.O

As much as I love monsters like zombies and werewolves, it's the human psychopaths that really pump my blood. Simon is sick!

@thedeem0N agree , your imagination creates the wicked ness , what happens in the alternate ending ??

Does anyone know who it is that does Simon's voice? I'm dying to know and I can't find any info on it. It's so wonderfully sinister, I don't think i'll ever forget the closing line.

I can really see why this is disturbing along with the likes of Silent Hill, The Machinist and Jacob's Ladder.

If Hank was seen walking around more (without us knowing it's him) This would have been even scarier but the finished product does a lot of justice to itself

thanks for the lecture Ace, but I prefer "asylum" or "lunatic asylum" simply because it sounds better. You sound pretty defensive about the name, were you a patient there or something?
sonofbadabbage 4 years ago
Well Zach first off seemed pretty defensive about the fact that it was a hospital, not an asylum.
StuffedMannequin 4 years ago
It was known as Danvers State Hospital as well as Danvers State Insane Asylum. It was a psychiatric hospital so it functioned more as a asylum. Either way.

I have been a horror fanatic for years, and by now I almost never get even the small jitters while watching horror films. But this one, there was something too menacing and truly eerie about this film that stays with me still to this day! Maybe because the case of Mary Dobbes is true!
