  • Every now and then I HAVE to come back and hear this again. She's such a phenomenal talent and has NEVER received the accolades she so richly deserves.

  • I, too, wish she had achieved more fame; she truly deserves it. Love her to bits.

  • Did she really jog across the stage singing and maintaining control of her voice at 4:22. Receive your blessing please and thanks.

  • 5:01 perfection!! DIVA!

  • Speechless

  • WOW, now her voice is what i call "ABSOLUTELY AMAZING"!!! And btw, am i the only one that heard, Sinbad say "IT'S TOO BAD" when, Ms. Mills was done singing??? I wonder what he meant by that...Maybe he meant: "It's too bad i'm a married man, or i'd bang you silly, lololol:-)!!!

  • @Ladywrip I heard that also.I can't help but wonder if he meant it's too bad she didn't get the part in The Wiz since Diana Ross was hand picked to do the role. Not to mention that she brought the house down every night in the broadway stage before the movie was made.

  • I'm a 19 year old MALE, and I get chills every time I watch this video! Homegirl can sang!!!

  • Stephanie Mills is one of the best singers ever!

  • Let the Church say "AMEN"

  • A truly Remarkable Spirited Passionate Performance that will never ever be outstaged. She deserved singing Hall of Fame on this performance ALONE.Love

  • Unforgettable performance! Truly classic! Stephanie is pure talent & elegance!!! Stephanie=what STARS are made of!!

  • I KNOW STEPHANIE DID NOT JUST SHOW OFF LIKE THAT? Breath control OUT of this world. Then she sat down like it was nothing. That little lady has so much energy when she performs. She definitely knows how to command a stage. It's a shame she wasn't bigger.

  • I said it before, but when struts across that stage singing "Hooooome". That gets me everytime. I can sort of listen and not watch the video, but when that part comes up, I just have to watch. That part alone fills me with such adrenaline.

  • Lady Caca will be forgotten in a few more years! She absolutely has no soul compared to Stephanie.

I have and will always love my Stephanie Mills. I do not wannna hear how horrible her voice is, because her voice is Brooklyn's finest! She shuts it down and brings it HOME!!!

  • @LadyCinnamonGlamBabe Damn right! That's why no one remembers that bitch Madon-- oh wait.

  • a true artist.......music like this brings me to tears

  • This little woman is so, so, so, Baaaaaad. This is live and you can feel the spirit (passion) flowing through her.

  • If you notice, she is singing live to an instrumental recording. Yet she generates as much energy and excitement as if she were singing with a live band. This performance was etched in my head, heart and soul from the very first time I saw it as a kid. I have no words, only tears.

  • 1 DISLIKE,COME ON TELL ,PATTI LABELLE TO QUIT HATING AND BE NICE,LOL

  • Had the honor of seeing her in concert and it was amazing

  • NO- one else should be allowed to sing this song, it should be a crime.

  • She bought her A- Game - This may be better than the studio version.

  • Breath taking! talent! brooklyn's finest! she shot this song, stabbed it! hung it! and burnt it, down to the ground!! End of Story!!

  • CLOSE THE CURTAIN, TURN OFF THE LIGHTS, LOCK THE DOORS...................................SHOW IS OVA!!!!!!!! NOTHING CAN FOLLOW THAT. SHE TOOK THAT SONG AND WRAPPED IT ALL AROUND THE RAFTERS. lawd, Lawd, LAWD.....she took err'body HOME. clapyahands, ClapYaHands,CLAPYAHANDS

  • I have always loved this performance. She is killing this song.

  • One person needs to go home.

  • I vividly remember, my twin and I in our bedroom in philly, watching showtime at the apollo when this came on. Mind you, i grew up in the 80's in this ruff/tumble city. when she finished singing, i look at my bro and we are both wiping tears from our eyes. Her talent is amazing. she murdered this song and took the audience on a ride with her, and that note at 3:50!! come on now, lets be real, who is bringing that today. Thank you Delirious 8 for bringing me a great memory. Will

  • Y'all....I got tears in my eyes listening to this song!!! Stephanie is one of my favorite peformers and this is one of my FAVORITE songs and I have thousands on my ipod. I was in college when this was a hit and everytime I hear it its like its the first time for me. I loved her range and showmanship through the WHOLE performance. I especially loved the way she had the crowd eating out of her hands!! She took them folks to church!!!!

  • phenomenal...Stephanie can sing this live (have heard her a few times at live shows)...she is a real r&b singer....a soul singer with range.

  • She "killed" it is an understatement... SHE "MURDERED" it at the Apollo!!!

  • I am waiting for BET to come to their damn senses and honor her on a Tribute Show. They keep honoring Patti and Chaka over and over.

  • I love this songggg!!!! i just knew i was steph back in the day!!,, hahaha.. However though, now i understand better what she is singing about, time has become my friend, as we live life and experience, life, we get more now than we got then...mmm i love my life today, Christ has made it easier for me to understand most things, and some things, and for the things i don't, well i just dont need to...not at the time anyway,,and if i never do His Love and Grace is enough to sustain me..

  • she dogged this track, she so sexxii w/ itt!!!

  • I just love how she holds that note at 3:50 and drags it to the other side of the stage. That move is epic!

  • at 5:30 Patti would have sent some shoes flying.

  • Just Awesome! Im older, and feel that every generation has 'their' kinda music and yes today's generation takes a big hit. I just wish that they wud concentrate more on the 'Art' and 'Craft' rather than lookin gud in da video...lol. Sang Stephanie sang. Hard to believe she was abused by Jeffrey of 'Shalamar'

  • @madonnabdfan1, Madonna still sucks and her religion sucks. Vogue sucks and Like a Virgin sucks. Madonna has never been a virgin, she's been touched for the millionth time. Stop living in the eighties and get a real username.

  • dlp1965 21 years later i still feel the power of this song man she blew this better than the original off "The Wiz" and off the "Home" album .Such a powerful voice in a very lil woman ! Big voices can come in small packages :)

  • She's one of a very few vocalists who could go toe to toe with Patti. Such power, such a fabulous voice. I NEVER get tired of listening to this. Still get goosebumps.

  • Such a little woman in stature with an exceptional big voice. Love me some Stephanie Mills....'what u gonna do with my loving"

  • @ delirious8: I do understand the point you initially tried to make and appreciate it. As an older person, I'd like to pass on a little advice, though. The 90's weren't the "heyday" of music by any means. Stephanie Mills could not be who she is without Patti Labelle in the 80's, Mavis Staples and Gladys Knight in the 70's and even Bessie Smith in the early 1900's. Music will forever change. It's up to you to learn about it...and I think you still have some learning to do. Look up earlier!

  • @TheCurt82, i think delirious is trying to make reference to the overall decline of quality music today that is passed off as talent. Many performers that actually cant sing. I agree most artist owe a bit of gratitude to the ones before them but i too must admit that the current generation is doing very little to respect the "musical baton" that has been passed on to them. Music has changed but i would be hard pressed to say it is for the better. Heard anything that will be a classic tomorrow???

  • This song is special to me. It make me think of my MOTHER who has passed away. Stephanie, has a very pretty voice. I listen to the song all the time.

  • "That woman can sing"

  • dat 1 person who hit dat dislike button...kill urself!!

  • They don't make singers like Stephanie anymore!

  • STEPHANIE MILLS IS THE GREATEST FEMALE SINGER OF ALL TIME. I WISH SHE WOULD DO MORE APPEARANCES. I SAW HER IN NEWARK, NJ A COUPLE YRS AGO AND SHE TORE THE PLACE UP!!! I HOPE SHE CONTINUES TO B BLESSED.

  • When I Think Further Into It "1989" Had The Tru-est DIVA'S Coming Out To Say Farewell To The Extravagant Yet Deadly [AIDS] Decade, Stephanie, Alyson Williams, Vesta Williams, Regina Belle, Miki Howard, Karyn White, Quincy Introducing TAMIA, MILIRA, And Let's Not Forget Even Janet Jackson....LoL

  • ...Stephanie's Spectacular Performance Reminds Me Of An Episode Of "The Arsenio Hall Show", It Was His Birthday, And Regina Bell Was On The Circuit Promoting " Make It Like It Was" I Thought It Was A Nice Song But A Bit Too SYRUPY, She Sang It "Specifically" For Arsenio Hall On His Birthday Episode......Regina Bell CRUCIFIED IT, Seriously, She Ripped It To SHREDS.....I Remember Running Out Immediately To 'RECORD EXPLOSION' Or "CRAZY EDDIE" And Buying The CD That Next Day.....

  • Stephanie Mills OBLITERATED "HOME" On This SHOWTIME At The APOLLO....This Was My Most Memorable Episode, Because The Amateur Competition That Evening Drove STEPHANIE To Getting Out There For The Closure Of The Show And Giving One Of Her Most Fierciest Vocal Whoopings Ever Fired Up Upon This Stage, I RECALL I HAD To CATCH THE REPEAT OF THIS PERFORMANCE... IF U THIS ENTIRE EPISODE OF SHOWTIME, TAKE IT OUT, DUST IT OFF, POUR A GLASS OF RED WINE, SIT BACK, WATCH CLOSELY AND JUST MARK MY WORDS....!

  • This song is on everyone of my playlist

  • I had this on a VHS tape along with a live A house is not a Home Luther Van Dross performance at the Ebony Awards and about 40 other live performances. It was destroyed when I moved back to Detroit. I thank you for bringing this back to me!

  • there are some good versions out there, but stephanie mills OWNS this song!

  • TEARS. I got tears pouring out of me...just when I thought I was empty. Thank you.

  • im 17 and love stephanie mills and alot of great soul music from the past. oh my god. she tore up that stage. best performance of that song ever. best performance on apollo. i was brought to tears listning to this especially with that last high note at the end. i wish i was there to see that. Truly the most underatted gifted vocalist ever

  • WOW, IM SITTING HERE IN STARBUCKS WITH MY HEADPHONES ON. PEOPLE DONT REALIZE THAT IM LISTENING TO A RARE TREAT FROM THE APOLLO

  • WOW!!! For those very few people who don't believe in the CREATOR - take that!

  • @MOCITYLOVE Um...yeah. I don't believe in a god (singular or plural) but I love her performance nonetheless. What does a deity have to do with this anyway?

  • @kalabro The overwhelming "hands down" majority believe that we (you as well) are a result of the Creator. Our talents are a result of his grace (even if we use them to deny his existence) not the result of time + matter + chance. It would be very difficult to pulled that one over on the Apollo crowd that night. Imagine; out of nothing (impossible...out of nothing comes nothing....all day) comes something (Stephanie Mills pouring her heart & soul out resulting in emotional responses). Thanks

  • I remember this night like it was yesterday, I thought it was to be just another Stephanie performance. Boy was I wrong, after all these years it still sends chills through my body. I have never seen an artist bring the house down at the Apollo the way she did that night. Talent like this is living proof there is a god.

  • WHAT?! at 5:00 mark I choked on my coffee! What a vocal run! And so late in the song, What stamina!

  • I don't know how many times I have listened to this and I still get goose bumps and tears in my eyes. 5:02....REMARKABLE!!!! Even security was moved!

  • @cdjblue52 She killed them with that note!

  • The video brought tears to my eyes... She is truely one of the best vocalist of all times. I would love to see her get her props one day in the form of some reward.. In my opinion she deserves a few!!!!!

  • At 5:00, that was God in her!!! GREAT performance. This was one of her best ever. She held NOTHING back!!!!

  • yooooo on "real" she just went to the note no fishing for it no running up to it or "sliding" she just hit it......one day I will just hit it lmao

  • Stephanie Mills is soul music personified. Her voice sends shivers through my soul. This performance is only a tip of the power that is this womans voice.

  • She has a powerful freakin voice. Dang, just wanna kiss her. lol

  • OMG! Her voice is Classic! Damn!

  • She used to date MJ. Another reason I would be jealous of her, besides her voice, and hair. hahaha

  • lol....she is the BOMB! SHE has a hell of a voice! My favorite R&B song!!!!!!

    It's spirtiual!!!!!!

  • stephanie is speacial...........HOME

  • It is pretty sad that 21 years ago we had a great song like this come out and 21 years later we are seeing the likes of Lady Gaga, Usher pevert what makes great music

i am a young person myself and feel awfully sorry for the youth who has not lived in the the 90's to experience the last decade where music was real and it was about the talent

  • @delirous8 I feel sorry for you, I am young and I can appreciate wonderful music like this, while I can indeed appreciate new age music like Lady GaGa, who is not by any means to be compared with Usher. With different times come different music, it's not sad.

  • @s0undstrulycrazy Lady Gaga music is not soulful and it is not timeless and going to to make music better in this period of time we need people who can bring us back to the days when it was all about the voice and the simplicity in the lyrics

Lady Gaga is flash in the pan artist give her three more years and we would not hear from her again

Don't feel sorry for me because i know my music

  • @delirous8 Maybe that's your problem, you know "your music" - the music you like. Not all music is soulful. And for Lady GaGa, who managed to finish writing her next album while on her world-wide tour, I can assure you, she's not going anywhere unless she's hit by a bus.

  • @delirous8 ppl said that about Michael Jackson and Madonna and look at how AMAZING they are, and Lady Gaga and Stepahanie are from two different genres. so please be quiet

  • @delirous8 pop music isn't suppose to be soulful lol silly child

  • @madonnabdfan1 Madonna Sucks!!!!

  • @powerrule lol yeah she sucks so bad lol all the way to the bank. most succesful female artist of all time lmfao u silly hater

  • @s0undstrulycrazy Lady Gaga and Usher are so talented they should do a duet. and dance together. that would a chart topper

  • @s0undstrulycrazy I agree with u but what do u mean "is not to by any means to be compared with Usher" Usher is more talented

  • @madonnabdfan1 No Usher is not like Lady gaga, but you have to admit, his new material is garbage

  • A sincere thank you to everybody who commented on this video i am happy that i am making you smile by seeing this performance.

I am a big fan of Stephanie and always thought she was such an underrated talent who needs to be held next to the greats like Patti, Aretha, Whitney, Natile etc

  • this video has over 29 thousand hits and I probably listened to it over 5 thousand times. lol just kidding but I listed to this song so much my son yelled out and said MOM FOR GOODNESS SAKE..........He's a teenager so I said listen son...this is music.......the heck with TI RI QU LOL

SING THAT SHIT MS MILLS Always unrated and always one of the best percormers in our times

  • girl can sing

  • SHE KILLED IT!!!!! And at 5:02 I could have passed right out...lol

  • this is the BEST version. (in my opinion) there are a few others floating around youtube, but her voice cracks on the best parts! this was a perfect performance!

  • "Don't try this at 'home'..." Her vocal range is too unique to emulate!

  • Every time I hear Stephanie sing that song, I feel like I've been to church. That song comes straight from her beautiful spirit and soul and both are rooted in the church she came from. What a blessed group of people!

  • Delious8 - I can't thank you enough. THIS is one of the absolute best performances I've ever seen or heard. Can't say it's better or they're better - this is just AT THE TOP. 100% complete utter perfection and JOY. What a blessing. Thank you for sharing. I live in NYC and OH LORD - would give anything to see something like that. Of course 20 years ago now. Anyway. *smooch* lovelovelove Julien
  • And Stephanie can still tear this song up today. Amazing woman. I get chills hearing this song. She needs to give Beyonce a crash course and real singing.

  • Its always to be HOME, where you know there is always LOVE for everybody...

  • She wore that song out!! Go Stephanie

  • lol. beyonce who?

  • @plutovex she must be doing something right.. considering she always comes up in comparison.. lol

  • @jtyshi7 true but b have become so slutty lately she used to be so classy what happpened to beyonce. I dont know but she got to do better as far as how she carry herself people like stephanie in their time refused to sell their souls and be half naked just for money ya knw i still luv b tho

  • @plutovex exactly what i said Stephanie is so classy

  • I watched Kristin Chenoweth sing this song tonight, she is a really great singer. But this is Stephanie's song, she completely owns it.

  • I have watched this so many times and it still takes my breath away!!!

  • She is such a sexy little awesome ball of dynamite. Powerful voice and classy. I love how she is able to work the crowd all by herself....now thats entertainment!!!!

  • i don't care how many times i watch this, it never gets old...and that note @ 5:00 kills me everytime, nobody and i mean nobody can hit that note, or do this song from start to finish and hit every single note without messing up...you own this and always will..Love You Ms. Mills

  • Stephanie PREACHED that song!! She's been a powerhouse from Day 1! No one can touch her! She is anointed to sing!!

  • i think stephanie's version is ten times better than diana ross'. one of the best voices of all time

  • I love how she got into the song 2:55-3:06, she made me move with her.!!!

  • No disrespect to Lady Di but she is whispering(chanting) on the song. Stephanie is singing and hitting notes throughout the song. Home is Stephanie Mills' signature song. No one in the world can sing Home like Ms. Mills. Whitney came close about 25 years ago..

  • @lanceboydtalent I agree with you 100%. Stephanie Mills Voice is differently untouchable. Ill prolly get bashed for saying that, but she is up there with whitney, and in some ways better.

  • She can't sing like that she don't have that much power in her voice. This is Stephanie's songs

  • @melivn7 Diana Ross did a good job yeah, but Stephanie was putting emotion into that song since she was 16!!! And as she grew, that song became more and more powerful. Diana sang it well in the film, but didn't preach it. That is truly Stephanie's song for eternity. Diana already has her hits. There's no comparison.

  • This is powerful...but where were you when she sang this on broadway playing the part of Dorothy in the Wiz. This just a great song and having a voice like Stepjani just elevates it.

  • OMG I remember the lady in the balcony with the white sweater...she used to get the Holiness at every performance! Is she still living?

  • Beyonce, Alicia, etc.......LOOK & LISTEN IN WONDER

  • FLAW-LESS! THIS is a performance to study. When live, this is how good you should sound against the original track..... and now that i typed that, i feel that i've set the bar higher than 99% of the artists out there can perform to.

  • Stephanie is a true R&B legend.

  • lovely

  • 4:59 "Stephanie, PLEASE!!!" All I can say is OH MY GOD!!!!

  • Stephanie !!! Welcome BACK Home to HARLEM............We love You baby.

  • I want to hear one of the new "divas" try to sing this song! Them girls might burst a lung attempting. LMAO. Do it Stephanie!

  • @ deenice1973...Burst a lung...ROFL!!! Very little real talent out here today.

  • Comment removed

  • An amazing gift to the world who doesn't get the credit that she deserves from man but God knows. Thank you Sister Stephanie for blessing us with music and powerful lyrics...not that bah! bah! beat beat stuff.

  • Stephanie the World is so undeserving of your gift. God bless you! Keep that gift you have with the Lord! You are an amazing woman. Beyonce and all these other voices out there can not compete with you. Love you Stephanie...

  • I don't care how many times I listen to this, I still get goose bumps all over, ESPECIALLY at 4:59. She is the absolute best...she is THE DIVA!!!!!

  • @cdjblue52

I totally agree...my goose bumps come at 2:57, wow, she is fabulous! Every once in a while I come back to this video to watch it again...

  • She's is definitely better than Barbara Streisand.

  • SING THAT SONG GIRL SING IT!!!!!!! Beyonce a great vocalist? psssshhhh!!!

  • she sang while runnin across da stae... werq!

  • I always loved her voice. It had a very unique sound.

  • MY GOD! WHAT WAS THAT? (Please, forgive the English mistakes here, I will let my emotions flow!). I AM SHOCKED! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! Here I was, checking "belting Streisand" and then I find this powerful woman, pure talent, pure emotion, pure joy, the eyes glowing and meaning EVERY SINGLE WORD AND NOTE, smiling, singing easily, happilly, getting the audience under her feet every little and eternal movement or breath she took. Stephanie, love, love, love you now! Delirous8, thank you!

  • @PrimoPaganiniNeto AMAZING RIGHT! I had to put this on my ipod after seeing her sing this and this was almost 20 years ago! STEPHANIE MILLS IS THIS SONG!

  • @PrimoPaganiniNeto true. all i have to say

  • @PrimoPaganiniNeto So u must not had never heard of her? She is Stephanie mills and she started out in broadway plays > She was the 1st Dorothy to play in the theatre play called THE WIZ. And she originated this song, which she sung at the end of the play.

SHE WENT ON TO RECORD A NUMBER OR HIT NUMBER ONE SONGS

  • @WORKOUT66 Thank you! I didn`t know Stephanie (it is embarassing for me...). Could I ask you something-I have friends in America, why is it that every time I tell them that I love Streisand I always get laughs (AT me, not WITH me eheh)? She has radical political positions and is demanding on that, but do american people recognize in her one of the best voices ever and such different talents in the same person that it seems rare to find someone like her? Ok, Stephanie got me as well since then!

  • @PrimoPaganiniNeto Well more than likely they laugh because of the times that we are in. Barbara Streisand was popular in the 60's to 70's.

So more than likely they laugh because she is no longer in the swing of things>UP TO DATE as to say.

Here in America, No one really hears from Barbara. She may come out of hiding and do an concert maybe once every 6 years but other than that no one hears from her

  • @WORKOUT66 Eheheheh great to know about that! I`ve seen in many interviews with Barbra that she has a stage fear. Many of my younger friends have never heard about her. You know, I remember a day when I was going to Miami from New Orleans two or three months ago (we had the APA 2010 in New Orleans) and an american girl, very nice one, she did not know much about Barbra. Who is THE female artist in America nwadays in your opinion? Thanks for this chat, by the way!

  • @PrimoPaganiniNeto i wholley agree with you!!!!!

  • Stephine please sing my song!!!!!!!

  • This was it!!! I watched this episode on "Showtime At The Apollo" back in 1989 and the chills that went through me back then just returned, I can first remember in1978 my Aunt Mary took me and my cousin to see Stephanie in "The Wiz" on Broadway. Word was the closing song was beautiful but nothing tops her perfomance on the APOLLO that evening 20 years ago...I finally looked up the lyrics and the song blows me away still 30years later. Stephanie Mills Is Our Black Babara Streisand. PERIOD!!!!!!!

  • Dear GOD...What she did at 4:59(Please) was out of this atmosphere!!!!What a HUGE voice on such lil woman!!!!A LEGEND!

  • Yep...that's it ...that's the note!!!

  • Perfect vocal control!

  • I could listen to this song over and over..this is singing ....she sang the hell out of that song......

  • She's the best!!!!!!!!!!! Hands dwn!

  • @MzJazz313 i agree...she is the best!!!!!

  • If you like this version, check out the version she did in the late 90s. Search for her at Sinbad's music festival. it has approx. 134,950 views, it's live, and she's wearing a blue/lavendar chiffon dress. Trust me, you will love this!

  • I feel like I've just be delivered after watching this. It was like a testament.

  • She should have been arrested for "sangin" that song like that. Go' on Stephanie......"singandshout...tellmewhatitzallabout"....

Diana who? Stephanie owns this song!

  • My favorite version of Home, by far. Woooow, Stephanie sing my song, lol!

  • I think this was 1988 and not 1990 though. I had relocated away from "Home" that year with my mother and we were watching the Apollo show. I'm so glad I found this again, it meant so much when I first heard this performance.

  • 1989. :-)

  • Remembering this incredible Apollo appearance, wonderful to see again & what a reminder nobody does it like Stephanie...what a classic! Bravo Stephanie!!!

  • CHILLS! The woman can GO! I love when she sat down. I remembered that performance, and came looking for it tonight. Mind blowing!!!!

  • its me i love this woman so much she dosen't just sing she sang

  • This will ALWAYS be Stephanie's signature song. It's HERS!!!! Just like "And I am Telling You" is Jennifer Holliday's song ONLY. These two broadway divas cannot be touched!!!

  • I really like Jennifer Holliday's verison of "And I am Telling You," because I was fortunate to see her sing it when I was younger, but Jennifer Huston did a wonder job on that song too. Enjoy.

  • One of the best performances ever!!!

  • OMG!!! that's all I can say!!!

  • the absolute best!!!!

  • One word LEGEND!

  • My favorite singer. Brings me to tears.
