Depends on the pedal, but for the most part I hated how it acted with overdrives and distortions. Unless the volume knob on the pedal was way low, it would always end up making the digital circuitry clip in a really harsh way.
It was the number one reason I sold the amp. It's like you're stuck with either the preamp voices, or nothing.
to my understanding this was a tube amp (well hybrid)......so even if i were to keep the amp on the 1st channel and plug in some pedals (yes distortion) it wouldn't give me well done sound...
BOTH channels go through the digital signal processor. The initial tone shaping of the amp is digital, and so a distortion generally won't sound much better than throwing a pedal in front of a solid state amp. If you boost the level on the distortion pedal, then even the clean channel will start to clip in a harsh and unmusical way.
A lot of people think the first channel is all tube. It's definitely not.
I got the vox night train when I sold the SCXD. I liked it a good bit. I later tried the Egnater Tweaker for a while and it's pretty cool. Try to check out the tweaker, it can do most of the stuff the SCXD can. Also, used Fender Blues Jrs can be cheap. They're pretty cool and way versatile.
Seriously I don't think you can lose with any of those 3 amps. If I had to pick a favorite from those three I might say the AC15. The ac15 gets a fuller overdrive tone at low volumes and comes with a great speaker stock. With the blues jr you'd probably wanna get a better speaker sometime.
The Pro Jr is best for if you don't have to worry about volume. It's also not as versatile, but it does sound great on it's own.
@enthnd03 Hey if you're looking at the AC15, have you thought about the C1 model as opposed to the CC1? You get two channels, normal & top boost, better spring reverb (so they say), still get trem, a Greenback speaker, and a tone cut.
to get my sc loud i run the line out(in the back) into the fx in on the back of my 60 watt Fender concert...and this allows the tones from the champ to be amplified through the power amp section of the concert...huge volumes are available....CAUTION..DO NOT RUN THE LINE OUT INTO ANY NORMAL GUITAR INPUT(in front of any amp) the voltage is too high and will destroy your input section of the second amp...
It's meant to be versatile, so it doesn't necessarily 'kill' for any of the above, but I'm sure you could find something useable for most genres.
Like I told another guy, I've moved on to the Egnater Tweaker. I haven't found anything that the SCXD did that the tweaker can't do, although pedals help when I need to keep the volume down.
The SCXD doesn't take pedals well. The preamp can get overloaded and sound harsh. A good clean amp and pedals can give you what you want
Nice tone & nice playing. Is nice to hear somebody play a demo that sounds like a real song something instead of the usual noodling. I have an SCXD and it is a pretty good little amp. I like it for it's light weight and versatility. I generally mic it to a PA. 1/2 the weight of my Vox AC15 not quite as rich tones. For really small informal gigs I can even leave my pedalboard at home.
Hey, thanks for this demo, it sounds amazing really...can i ask if you think this also sounds like the Tiny Terror from orange...I got the impression it does with some of the setting you used...would be interested in your opinion too...thanks
I haven't played a tiny terror yet I'll try to go play one when I get the chance.
The Night Train is like a cousin of the TT though, and I have to say the night train sounded more dynamic than the SCXD, and the sound was a little "richer", especially the sounds with a lot of crunch. I'm guessing the TT would exhibit both of those qualities.
The SCXD is straight up more versatile than either of the two, but I have to say the Egnater Tweaker can nail most of the SCXD voices.
@FuseG4 Thanks, I cant try a TT in person untill I can get to Helsinki which is quite a way away so I have to trust youtube a little which can be decieving as I've found out when trying out other amps..the night train seems to have a lot of noise in every demo Ive heard, the TT might have too much midrange and with no eq I wonder if its possible to change it with a pedal eq. a lot of tube amps Ive tried are just too loose and weak sounding, the 1watt blackstar is still too loud for apartments :)
I have a ELPs and a champ (30w) Im having a hard time getting a good sound out of it, what dial settings were you zeroed in on around 3:12, 3:50, and 6:20 (gimme danger I think)?
@angryredcom it's just gain, treble, and bass all at 5. the only thing changing on the amp is the voicing knob which changes which amp it's modeling.
If you have one of the solid state fender "champion DSP" amps or anything like that, you may wanna look at something like a Fender Blues Jr for the kinda sounds I was getting.
uh-huh. you're entitled to your opinion. It's a decent amp for the price and there are plenty of people who enjoy it. If you can't find decent tones in a simple amp like a night train, then either you're a snob or inexperienced.
You're right. I should not call you as such. However, I strongly disagree with your statement about the night train. No one likes negative comments, especially when it comes to something regarding taste. Taste in art, music, or maybe amps. Please refrain from being negative, and I will as well. Agreed?
@FuseG4 I don't go negative on people's playing. There is nothing negative about telling the truth about rip off amps like the Night Train , Orange amps, signature series... they are designed to rip off the ignorant, guitarists tend to be chumps and will pay a lot extra for a blue led and 1.50c worth of components. Encourage knowledge and skepticism and make the world a better place, that is positive not negative
I agree with your logic but I don't feel like the night train is a rip off. The night train is fairly priced for what one gets. it has a very simple circuit, simple controls, and it is responsive to both the tubes one puts in it, and the speaker one pairs it with, and the guitar one puts with it.
I guess we just have different tastes in guitar tone. The night train can sound like a vox ac15 if you play with the controls, and can do more. Not quite the same, but enough to enjoy.
I read the description for your video; I have a Vibro Champ and it does not stay clean up to 9 - 10 as you stated your Super does. With the preamp gain at 6 using the master alone overdrives the output section more. With the preamp around 6 it starts to break up when the master is at 7.
Thank you! I'm glad you can get a better response out of your vibrochamp. Maybe I just had some JJ 6v6s with higher than normal headroom? I did sell my SCXD, but the price of the lil vibrochamp, the sound of a few of the voicings, and what you just said makes me think that when I have to move into an apartment next semester, maybe I should snag a vibrochamp as a bedroom amp. I'm rocking the Vox nigh train now; I get preamp, power amp, and speaker breakup 'til the cows come home
@FuseG4 I think the night train is another great amp. It is definitely more of a purist's amp considering it doesn't have any modeling getting in the signal path. I need to try one out next time I go to the circus, ie. Guitar Center.
Yeah the other thing it doesn't have is reverb. But still, it's a b*tchin amp and it does the Vox AC15 thing pretty well but still has more gain. It's brit-flavoured tone city, especially thru the matching cab. Loud as crap for 15W!
hm.. I did think about it but eventually sold the amp. Wasn't feeling the whole "lack of power tube distortion" thing. Crank the sucker up to 10 on ch. 1 and you just get this harsh clipping.
by any chance do you know how well this amp interacts with pedals

It can get pretty loud but I'd add an extension cab, at least 1 1x12, if I were going to have a drummer.

how load can this amp go? can it do full band practices with drummer + bassiest ect.

@YohanBone I promise you, this amp is plenty loud for full band practices, at maybe 4, a little above.
Great amp, And it's really cheap.
