My freshman band is playing this, its really hard sense were such a big band and have to practice in separate groups then have one rehearsal to put it all together. Everyone on the 32 notes (1st clarinet, flute, and 1st trumpet I think) are having a difficult time with those too. This band preforms it really well, I hope my band will do just as well.
its not about how hard a piece of music is its about how well it is performed, a song may be easy to play but hard to perform well with proper phrasing and blending of the different sections
@agent7039pie it's not easy at all :( I think out of all our performances, this is the one we did worse in. just because it's so hard to keep tempo on such a hard song when clarinets are playing runs throughout the middle of the piece. also, everyone was out of tune lols
@agent7039pie I'm sorry, you must be terribly confused. Yes, the notes and rhythems are for the most part easy, but the song itsself is by no means easy. A song like this takes passion to sound good, and I have trouble believing any middle school band as a whole could even bear the thought of passion. Most of them will drop out before highschool, I guarantee it.
@agent7039pie The difficulty of a piece can not be measured by how easy the notes are. It is not "easy" to make this piece sound as beautiful, emotional and powerful as it can. It is a beautiful composition by Samuel Hazo, and provides a challenge to musicians in the area of musicality and creative/emotional expression -- there are far too many 8th grade plus musicians who have virtuosic technical skill, yet struggle to play with the emotion that is required to truly make music.
@agent7039pie its kind of easy... but when you get the notes down, you have to worry about making it musical and blending and dynamics. otherwise its boreing if you dont.
our high school concert band just played this for large group contest =) it is listed under "shadows" if anyone wants to check it out, but you might have to just search for benson high school MN if it does't come right away. i love this song so much. I get goosebumps everytime i listen to it, without fail. there is an incredible amount of emotion.
Personaly, i liked Solas Ane by Hazo a tiny bit more then this. Either way, the peice is still quite nice to listen to and even better to play. Good Job.
What a fantastic piece. Very nice band; you sound great! Piccolo player is a little off on higher notes but she plays beautifully with a nice tone! :) Some of the people that commented were one of the first to perform this live?! So lucky! I'm playing the flute part in this piece with my high school's top band for a VMEA conference. Thank you for sharing! 8D
We played part of this for our marching band show. It was very easy to play the notes it but it was another thing to play it well.
