Back in the day of cool high school bus drivers.... Or well being in high school and going to a small school... The students on my bus got into a whole bunch of trouble and we had to sit in assigned seats for a week My bus driver gave us pieces of paper with the lyrics printed on them and made us sing this song... Not only is this how I felt for a really long time but this used to be my favorite song when I was in 8th/9th grade... :D
I remember when this song was used on The Simpsons.... Marge called Krusty the Klown's toy company telephone number and this song came on when they told her to hold!
got my first reel to reel recorder in '65 and remember recording this as well as well respected man by the kinks - good times back in the mid 60's.....
If only we could reverse time back to when music was simple and real. I know our parents did not approve of this music but people didn't kill because of the lyrics of the songs or whateve they call rap
This is one of the all time greatest hits. I loved to dance to this song when i was younger and i sure miss dancing today as there are not to many places here
that play these older songs to dance too. The songs Gary sang , the words just kinda sent chills threw your body, and romance was in the air all the time.Sure miss the sixties.
I remember when this song was SO popular to sing along with. It was like everybody knew the words and wanted to have fun with it. Gary also sang at a pitch that encouraged others to join in with him....not too low and not too high.
I know Gary had a drug problem. I also remember an interview with one of Jerry Lewis' other sons talking about Jerry's temper (I admire the older man a lot for his skill, and for his dedication to the MDA kids).
The "other" son recalled how once Jerry threw Gary against a wall when the Dad was confronting the son about alleged drug use. I also got the feeling Gary really wanted to please his Dad, perhaps to live up to him. In retrospect I'm guessing this "clown" indeed cried some tears.
@ATamandua One thing, though. Gary Lewis won't complain about being drafted no matter what it did to his career. He said he saw what Elvis did, and that he wanted to serve his country as well, and always be proud for having done so. Mr. Lewis has said that Viet Nam vets come up to him all the time after shows and thank him for what he did. Thanks indeed for serving our country, Gary!
@NOMcSame08 Around the time when Gary Lewis was really getting launched as a rock musician, JFK sure thought communism posed a threat to Viet Nam, Indochina, us and freedom, didn't he? (See: Kennedy, President John F, Inaugural address.)
@ATamandua Yes, you are correct JFK probably did think that, at least publicly. Back then communism was used as an excuse for governments to do whatever they wanted, much like terrorism today. They use these to instill fear into the population so that people will give up their freedom and rights for the sake of greater security. Communism didn't stop us from becoming China's biggest trade partner or recently conducting war games with the now communist Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Fall of 1965...I was away at Boarding School, and feeling quite homesick. Well this tune came over the radio, and my homesickness was eased quite a bit!!!!
Before Chandler Bing (Friends), I was best known for playing the part of a clown throughout my life. Actually, I still am. I posted this song a while back on my dating and FB sites as a tribute to some situations that had recently happened. Dating sucks!
Goddamm it!! How I fell identified with this song, period. No one takes me seriosuly and it's hard to get over that. Especially when the one you love rejects you by saying: "I adore you, but I can't love you, you're just too funny to be taken seriously - Thus I couldn't handle a serious relationship with you". Just happened. I'm holding up my tears right now.
@begbieboy Maybe you belong with someone like bbbeeerrriiieee up above, are you sure you guys aren't in the each others' vicinity and could get together? One person's clown is another's Romeo!!!
Go to the McDonalds drive thru and ask to see Ronald. Then ask "What? Dont'cha like clowns?", then shout "EVERYBODY loves a clown so WHY DON'T YOU?!" and then peel out of the parking lot.
Not the prototypical clown and comic as his dad Jerry was, but the son who upastaged the dad in music, carving a niche of his own away from the celebrity shadow, fame and fortune of his father.
I love you Amy, but you dont love me. That breaks my heart. Still I am a charming guy !!!!!! I will find someone who really value a nice Guy!!! Right here in Fargo.
Isn't that always the way with these old songs? They're usually about something happy, but the music makes you want to cry... if this song does that to you, listen to the Beach Boys "When I Grow Up to Be a Man", especially the fade-out...
there's a funny guy at work who can't really say what he means/feels but he's goofy and awkward and doesn't really see that this is his charm and why I love him is so because he's funny and tries to conceal that he's a tragic joker underneath unwilling to deal with any emotional snags but he wears his meltdowns like in an absurdist draggy pomp.&.I love that clown! I don't think he loves me.. makes me sad..but I am willing to stagger in a forward manner towards acceptance and sensible detachment
The sad, tragic and painful realities of life....That which makes him attractive to you is precisely that which he thinks makes him repulsive to others. How sad.
Gary Lewis did some of the best songs on the radio in 65 and 66.
I can remember running off to buy some of them as soon as I heard them. I saw him perform live at an outdoor venue in Central Park, in the summer of 1966.
