i don't understand you guys.. has Gary pissed into your serials or something? this is very insightful view on some of the most original, inspiring and psychedelic music made today. Get a grip.
@trevorgarford Thanks for your input Trev, you sure have mastered "beauty in language". I especially like the way you saved all the capital letters for the ending. Subversive wordsmith that you are.
all you young bucks making negative comments about a group that has been around longer than some of you. The true sound connoisseur understands what he is saying and understands where he is coming from. Yage are persons who truly want to experiment and evolve. Unlike majority of modern music who don't really understand the purpose of sound. I think he has the right to act the way he is acting. After all, he is a part of one of the most influential groups of our time.
Man, he had alot of anger inside of him, understandably, with society being so frustratingly oblivious. I love the music, and have for 15+ yrs. I hope he's mellowed out and found peace in his now older age. I, myself, was very much off-put and angry with the world when I was younger, and it caused me alot of pain. Luckily, I have learned my lesson and let the water of life roll off my back these days.
It's often that the creative "geniuses" (or whatever) come across to the "normals" as arrogant or pretentious, because the "normals" are usually lame, smallminded fuctards. I think the fans who understand their music really get his message.
Gary Cobain. It's amazing what recovering from lead poisoning can do. He obviously realised what a pretentious wanker he was. Now records under the Amorphous Androgynous moniker (one of Noel gallagher's favourites)
It is interesting that he comments: "I'm trying to fight the whole history of music. It seems like I'm losing." Actually he is joining quite a tradition dating back to Gregorian chant and continued through today in Western music--music and sounds have been borrowed and recycled for centuries.
What he is fighting against is more modern tendencies in capitalist societies who value privatization and ownership and wealth. They even want to own sounds!
@MrSquareroots I don't think we can judge from this video clip whether he is "pretentious" or not. Clearly this has been edited and presented in a way that we can't see if the interviewer might be an ass or not. Maybe s/he asked questions or set a tone that wasn't so friendly. Rather than judge what you think his personality might be like based on this video only, you might do better to consider the words he says - they are quite interesting. Unless you know him personally, its not fair.
@DerangedRanger1 Come on man. This is a promo video by them is it not? In which case they would of been happy with it. Plus, even if it were edited badly, the level of douchiness is at sound dangerously high levels I stand by what i said anyway. Jeeeeeeez i mean just listen to what he says...multi-headed individual ya know?
@MrSquareroots Even if that is true, do you really think that FSOL is control of their own promo or would it be in the control of his recording company? Are you involved with the music business at all?
But let's suppose you are right. Are you so naive that you believe advertisements to be full of truths? It could be merely an act to shape the public's impression of FSOL and not a representation of his true character. I anxiously await your response.
@LDNURECS LDNURECS, there are those that make the argument that today's music copyright practices are racists (because they force styles like hip hop to change). But if that were completely true then FSOL wouldn't be affected. That being said, authors certainly quote and cite each other when they write and they put the references in footnotes. Why can't musicians do that too? John Oswald tried that and was forced to destroy his recordings - even though he wasn't selling them!!!
Wow. Thanks for posting this. FSOL has been one of my favorites for a long time - I first heard about them in the 80s but I really started liking them a lot in the early 90s. But I've never seen what they look like or heard what they say. What a lot of people don't seem to realize is that musicians have, for a long time, recycled sounds or made references to other music (the 19th century is full of it! See C. Reynolds, "Motives for Allusion".) I like the way he defends it in techno here!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
sounds like these where new in the 60s, this is not progressive music. Amon Tobin, FSOL, BoC, aphex and all these nerds think they are some sort of gurus ahead of time, listen to the SebastiAn (french guy in ed banger crew), Shadowdancer etc- youve never heard anything like that before. Its maybe not as deep but its way more fresh.
That should have been "not disparaging". It would have been an obvious mistake, taken in context with the rest of the post, and also with the previous posts. I guess spelling nazis' wouldn't notice that. You don't have to respond. No one is forcing you, or cares particularly. Youtube opinions are some of the worst idiocy on teh interwebs, and some wanker policing spelling on them is an even bigger idiocy.
Definite proof that if you do enough acid, you will start believing anything you say! You can't imagine Brian Eno or Autechre talking up Ego like that. Some great sonic moments in their past though, I'll give them that.
Oh, I got FSOL alright. All the way from Stakker and Eurotekno, up until they went psychadelic. Then I decided to get off that train. I'm disparaging their musical accomplishments, but boy, that's some nauseating overly-pretentious verbage spewing out of his porcelein cake-hole. I think he might be high from the smell of his own bullsh!t.
I'm not going to continue responding to a person who said "up until they went psychadelic".. "up until" and psychedelic is spelled wrong you twat. Your disparaging their accomplishments? Ha ha.. and there you are rattling off about Gaz being pretentious.
Sometimes Progression depends upon Unreasonable Men with healthy egos. I think Gary shows his humility when he says- "its a vry very cheap way of making yourself look anything but the truth....cosmopolitan..... multi-headed". Its also worth noting he was dying of Mercury poisoning with acute symptoms allegedley. And besides -are any of us so perfect? Would we ant to be?
this is where the rave scene got scary to me - geeks with machines no longer able to see outside the fantasy world they've created. It's a slippery slope, fellas! not really dance music anymore, just studio boffin behaviour on shitloads of drugs. Look at him compared to the interview from a couple of years earlier.
I saw this when it was first broadcast and thought it was good to hear someone with something to say for himself rather than the usual false modesty crap. It's also worth remembering that he was suffering from mercury poisoning at the time.

He gives the impression that dimensions and the secrets of life! are just there!

Damn, if i made music like that I would be a little bit proud too. People don't really get how complex it really is, in many ways.
Nothing sounds like it, and probably never will. It's really cold sometimes, but delivers such incredible, almost supernatural moments.
