For the users who are childishly bickering through comments, read Nico: The Life and Lies of an Icon, Songs They Never Play On The Radio, and The End. I also recommend the documentary Nico Icon. Now about your bickering...enough! Just enjoy the music. Also, to anyone who is interested, I fixed this song with audacity because the pitch was too low. I am going to post it along with the other corrected tracks that Nico sang on.
to all of those who think that Lou wrote this song for Nico: you're totally wrong... it's always Shelly Albin the person about Lou is singing. same thing in pale blue eyes, perfect day, i can't stand it.
Nico was just a f*ck, not worth wrtiting a song about her
@ZiggyPeterLewis i'm not saying that Nico wasn't a great artist. i'm just saying that Lou never wrote songs dedicated to her. the reason is in my previous post ;-)
@nimatek667 - One thing I think it's important to understand is that the LISTENER interprets the song and the emotions behind it. The artist may have an intention, but that doesn't mean it's the only possible interpretation. I prefer to think that Lou Reed wrote Pale Blue Eyes about a Swedish boy he once knew, as Patti joked. ;) And that's a pretty awful thing to say about a woman you probably did not know. Dismissing a person with an ugly and unnecessary word - quite unfortunate, really.
@Timmybear yes, you may give every interpretation you like to. but i will always think that it's also important to know what the artist wanted to tell. man, there are people who think that "god save the queen" is a patriotic song.
so if you like the song give your own interpretation, but be infomed about the artist`s original intention.
this is how i always treated music.
and yes, i used complete inappropriate words talking about Nico
@nimatek667 - No, it's not really a matter of giving every interpretation one likes to. It has to be supported by the text. Anyone who thinks 'god save the queen' (either version, really) is patriotic and heroic is mistaken.
@Timmybear so in this case we're listening to a love song, right? people like to think that Lou wrote this song for Nico. what's the problem knowing and telling the people that he wrote this song for another woman? in a love song there's not much interpretation needed imo. i found interesting reading about Lou and Shelley even in order to understand why she was that importanto to him and why he wrote different songs about her and their relationship.
@nimatek667 - It's an interesting fact, but it's not contained IN the song. To me, "I'll Be Your Mirror" is a song I'd sing to a boyfriend, and not to a woman at all. It's all in how one receives it with one's brain.
@Timmybear Lou wrote this song in 1964 if i remember well. way before meeting Warhol and of course Nico who got imposed by Andy in order to promote better the Velvets and EPI.
he wrote the song in order to sing it himself (if you listen to his interpretations you hear it). the arrival of Nico forced them to find songs even for her, but as i know there was no song orininally thought for her to sing or even dedicated to her.
A moving performance by an artist who has always transcended criticism, both professional and amaturish, as in some of these posted comments. There were few bands like the Velvet Underground, and few singers like Nico, who so perfectly captured the heady atmosphere and propulsion of the '60s. When Nico sang a ballad like "I'll Be Your Mirror," it was like the calm after an anti-war riot, one during which you could well have had your head bashed in by a frustrated cop not much older than you.
@kitt75 Some people make mistakes and take the wrong roads in life. But, I don't think we should be talking about if her nature was at all unpleasant. We should speak on the behalf of her music, and the legacy she left behind. That's all : )
@thallasocracy .. ? .. I must admit it had not occurred to me that Lou is a Jew, but to suggest Nico was a Nazi? why, because she was German? that's the kind of nationalist/racist generalisation that a Nazi would make. Very silly.
Yeah, this is not her natural speed, the recording is slow, thats why she sounds so deep, it needs to be redone to be accurate, sped up slightly, kinda kool this way too though...
@thallassocracy A Nazi? It is rumored that Nico had made a comment "Remind me to never sleep with Jews again." Which was in reference to Lou Reed. Having said that, it has also been said that Nico was known to make unorthodox, even outrageous comments at times. It was only to get a rouse out of people. Of course, none of us were there to know for sure.
If you cared about Christa - at all - you would know more about her than to make such an asinine - and ungrammatical - comment. Christa was naturally proud of her father, and everything he stood for. You wouldn't have liked her, she wouldn't have liked or respected you.
Note to owners of the set...most probably own a copy of the wrong master...meaning, that your version is slower than what it should be. This can easily be remedied by copying the tracks from the CD, speeding them up with Audacity, and burning a new copy.
This should be correctly titled "Nico, John Cale, and Lou Reed live" but, I don't care enough. So, sorry for it being wrong to anyone who is offended.

I suppose it is Nico's great tragedy that no-one cares enough about her music to find out even the basic facts of her life.

Nico despised the Nazi heritage of Germany as much as she hated her beauty.
