Look how the tube just before lighting it is transparent and then it turns black as the flame front travels along the tube on its way to the cell. A bigger cell would be lots more fun.

Glad you wern't using a glass jar and a screw on lid cause you'd be in hospital having eye surgery.

Incidentally fire+hydrogen + OXYGEN = boom. Because you're not producing Hydrogen. You're producing Hydrogen+Oxygen (Water =H2O remember and you're splitting this in the cell then re-combining it when you burn it)

yea typicaly i should mention the oxygen. But i didnt cause he made his experimets openly in the full of oxigen, atmosphere. Anyway without oxigen fire cannot exist. Well... since we write "fire" we mean that there is oxygen anyway. :-)

Seal your container better so you don't lose pressure here and ALWAYS isolate your outlet tube from your ignition using bubbler/non return/flashback arresters etc

You made the mistake of forgetting why you had a bubbler in the first place.

Create weak point in cell using a plug of some sort which will blow out in case of flashback without causing damage. eg large rubber bung big enough to release the pressure before the lid fails.

Thank your stars that you used duct tape..the more strength in the containment method..the bigger the damage..do some more research..I have learned these lessons the HARD WAY..as you have just learned..trust the bubbler..it is your biggest defense..keep the experiments going..

I drilled a hole through 3 at the top and ran a bolt through them. I then cut a section out of the other 2 and drilled holes in them too so they wouldn't connect with each other.

I then separated them with insulation tape to avoid contact.

I wouldn't fully recommend the spoons but at the time it was all I had.

They were wired (-+-+-) Negative in the middle.

I think you had a leak. The pressure should have built up enough for you to keep the hose at the bottom of the bubbler. This video is fantastic, what a find. It is however a great testament to the spark arrester.

this is the s10 hybrid guy. i did the same but i use tupperware and the lid just blew off and no damage to any components. thats why i use tupperware canisters... i was also death for 30 minutes.. ears ringing for 10 hours... changed my underwear and back to testing... i am glad you are ok and that was a hoot!!!

I thought at first the flame in close proximity with the battery was a bad move but when you light the bubbles while pulling the tube from the bubbler , {with great anticipation } I could see the punch line coming .... Gas is Gas my friend the hydrogen in the batts can explode the same as in your cell only the acid will really be covering you. One of the biggest problems they had on WWII subs was the gas that cam from their Batts when charging

use the Crows Idea buildit like it may Bloooow!

This kind of thing happens from time to time. But usually, its caused by a careless moment or a faulty design. So build them like you expect them to blow up on you at any moment and keep your witts about you when you work with it.

Clean up the mess and get back to work.
