And by the way, for people who haven't heard yet, new 911 Carrera S with 400hp and DSG gearbox, completely stock with normal road tires (not slicks) goes around Nurburgring in 7:40, which is amazingly fast for what is basically a basic 911 with "only" 400hp. Its faster than old GT3 and Turbo S, its only 2 seconds slower than GT-R and ZR1 without slick tires, 8 seconds slower than 458 Italia without slick tires. Imagine how fast GT2 RS will be, considering current one is 7:19 on road tires.

This is the review of the 7 speed manual 991. Any stick shift car is hard to launch right every time, but I still expected something closer to 4 secs flat.. this month road and track mag got a pdk 991 0-60mph in 3.5 sec and qtr mile in 11.8 @ 118 mph. That is 997 GT3 fast ! amazing new car. I will wait a couple years for them to sort the bugs out before I get one ;^)
usually, the R8's main rival is the 911 Turbo. If the standard model (the 991 Carrera) can come this close to beating it, then i have no doubt that the new 991 Turbo is going to be one hell of a car. Watch out GTR..

@MagicAyrtonforever That squeak was probably because it's so new. The 996 I drove recently was really sounds as a pound. Even cruising over a bumpy road with stiff suspension there wasn't a rattle or anything. Besides, the Porsche 911 is Germany's most reliable car, at least according to them.

I love both Nissan and Porsche and I believe that there is a lot less to choose between them these days, especially considering the price and performance ratio. @LS9lives Unless it is AWD I doubt it can si that. The reason the Z06 needs the drag radials is because it is RWD and with 505 hp engine it cannot put the power to the ground at launch like AWD cars.
Somethings going on with that 991, no way a 991S pdk is only doing a 4.6 at 12.7. A 997S does a 4.0 at 12.2, it has to be the pdk bogging it down. the pdk is really only quicker if u have a carrera 4 or 4S. Other wise the 7spd is the quicker option, this car should have no problem matching the performance numbers of the 997S with the 7spd manuel, keep inmind the 991 is also bigger in every way than the 997.
@ZR1Terror With respect to chevy and the absolutley incredible LS7 engine. A 997 turbo S will do 0-60 in 2.9 sec and run the 1/4 mile in 10.7sec on stock tires, i rest my case. Hail the 911, hail Porsche!
So I imagine it really comes down to who's the better driver of the cars. Pretty evenly matched. I'd take both. If you REALLY made me choose one... I'd lean towards the R8. No, the Porsche. No, the Audi.... Maybe.
It's the shock the cars give to me. If a 911 drives past you all I think is "wow nice Porche." When a R8 rolls by its a much more exciting experience.

This is the review of the 7 speed manual 991. Any stick shift car is hard to launch right every time, but I still expected something closer to 4 secs flat.. this month road and track mag got a pdk 991 0-60mph in 3.5 sec and qtr mile in 11.8 @ 118 mph. That is 997 GT3 fast ! amazing new car. I will wait a couple years for them to sort the bugs out before I get one ;^)

usually, the R8's main rival is the 911 Turbo. If the standard model (the 991 Carrera) can come this close to beating it, then i have no doubt that the new 991 Turbo is going to be one hell of a car. Watch out GTR..

@asterio18 Um, okay. I really could not care less. What does a car's lap time on a track in California at the hands of a racing driver have to do with driving it? And 11.1 seconds in the quarter? On those tires; with that driver; at that temperature; at that gradient; with that wind; etc. Lap times and acceleration numbers are useless my friend.

@Cypern If all you care about is having a car that has the best chance of winning in a hypothetical race, than the GTR is for you; it would seem that's all it's good for. An R8 V10 and GT3 would be much more fun and that's all that matters to me.

@Cypern I never look at one sports car being the true winner over another loser; there's no winners and losers especially with cars that are so different. The GTR appeals to someone who's young and into tuners; the GT3 is a driver's car and takes some skill to drive.

@Buttnut105 The Porsche is all about luxury and speed, the GTR is nice quality but it's aim is to destroy everything on the road.. impressive.. I would take the Porsche because I love my luxury.. having said that, the 991 I drove had a nasty squeak coming from the back of the car.. with only 1500 miles on the clock I'm thinking twice about which cars are better made these days.

@MagicAyrtonforever That squeak was probably because it's so new. The 996 I drove recently was really sounds as a pound. Even cruising over a bumpy road with stiff suspension there wasn't a rattle or anything. Besides, the Porsche 911 is Germany's most reliable car, at least according to them.

@Buttnut105 unusual, as the 996 was one of Porsches worse attempts, having said that, most issues have been well sorted on those cars by now. I love both Nissan and Porsche and I believe that there is a lot less to choose between them these days, especially considering the price and performance ratio. I would 100% have another 911 but my present situation means I own a Nissan 370Z. Best bang for buck and still puts a massive smile on my face.

@LS9lives Unless it is AWD I doubt it can si that. The reason the Z06 needs the drag radials is because it is RWD and with 505 hp engine it cannot put the power to the ground at launch like AWD cars.

Somethings going on with that 991, no way a 991S pdk is only doing a 4.6 at 12.7. A 997S does a 4.0 at 12.2, it has to be the pdk bogging it down. the pdk is really only quicker if u have a carrera 4 or 4S. Other wise the 7spd is the quicker option, this car should have no problem matching the performance numbers of the 997S with the 7spd manuel, keep inmind the 991 is also bigger in every way than the 997.

@LS9lives the new model shown here does not seem to be equipped with pdk. A carrera 991 with pdk and sports chrono package does 0 to 60 in 3.9s.

@ZR1Terror With respect to chevy and the absolutley incredible LS7 engine. A 997 turbo S will do 0-60 in 2.9 sec and run the 1/4 mile in 10.7sec on stock tires, i rest my case. Hail the 911, hail Porsche!

So I imagine it really comes down to who's the better driver of the cars. Pretty evenly matched. I'd take both. If you REALLY made me choose one... I'd lean towards the R8. No, the Porsche. No, the Audi.... Maybe.

Both fantastic cars, but the R8 wins it for me :) it's just so much better built,, and with that V8 revving to 8,500 rpm! you cannot get a better sound! apart from a Tesla Roadster! which i'd have in favour of both these machines XD
