I love what he has to say, but think of the implications if all of humanity started foraging for food and living off the land, things would get scarce very quickly in a survival scenario. If we had one third the population and we were spaced out more evenly we could all live like that.
The Point of our society is to store share and build upon our knowledge and tech, we need to find some sort of middle ground. But Hey That doesnot mean small survivorgroups of us cant live healthy and sustainably
You can indeed grow our domesticated plants without pesticides, fungicides etc. Organic farming is not that hard once you have set up high biodiversity in a permaculture system. Even domesticated plants have immune systems, especially heirloom varieties. Just ask Sepp Holzer, he's been gardening without any pesticides and fungicides, fertilizers, irrigation etc. for decades. And I'd say it's wrong to say man-made things aren't natural. We're a product of nature, like it or not.
Bugs? Eggs? Chimps are omnivores, they will eat anything they can get their hands on. Just like humans. Fruits are a part of their diet, sure, but fruits are not in season all year around in nature and available all the time like in modern industrial civilization because there is always banana season somewhere on the planet and we can therefore ship them around so you can do LFRV or whatever. But it's not a natural diet for humans. Not by far. Don't kid yourself on that one.
@amx0x90 great apes are frugivores, FACT. What do frugivores eat? Duuuuuh... They also all live in tropical areas where there are fruit ALL YEAR ROUND. Geez, research much?
@jezzieBell05 I'm guessing you mean bannanas or exotic fruit. Chimps don't live on bannanas and exotic fruit. The bannana as we know it has been around for less than 2 hundred years. Bannanas are great. I eat stacks of them and will continue doing so but I'm sure you missed the point / s of the lecture. The message is, older unhybridised foods are very powerful and we sould seek them out.
I'm not (and neither is Daniel) saying that fruit doesn't exist naturally in the wild :P I just thought you were talking about those perfectly shaped yellow bananas we're are used to ;) hehe
@jessomglol I get ya. Technically bananas are herbs, not fruit, cause the tree has other flowers. Its a bit of a special case. But if they can grow organically, I can't see why they're THAT much of a frankenstein monster, lol. Maybe its an aussie thing, we're very proud of our aussie gold :)
@jezzieBell05 Well, fine then. Eat fruit as long as it is readily available and you fancy it. To each their own. I'm not flaming anyone but really just want to find out for myself. Thanks for the input. Have a nice day.
I appreciate the central message, but there is no evidence that the apple (malus domestica) derives from a berry. The apple's sole ancestor is malus sieversii, a wild apple native to Central Asia. The lineage stops there.
----
There is no evidence that the eggplant (solanum melogena) derives from belladonna. Both plants belong to the nightshade family, but belladonna is not the ancestor of the eggplant.
i get the idea "live more close to nature" and all. but as far as "food" goes.. What SHOULD I recommend at my local food market or health food store?? Meaning what veggies are closest to nature as well as fruit? Anybody????
That was very interesting I'm trying to learn more about this subject wild food foraging there are many weeds in Canada that are not native most of the weeds found in our grass. I have been using them for food eg(mallow) medicinal (plantain) dandelions. I go on walks to the grocery store the bush way and eat berries, better than the stores. The nature walks with the kids are filled with teaching them plants they can eat. I really liked the witch info I have a history that is hard to remember.
i think nuts and high calorie foods are the main "domesticators". i think nuts, according to nutritiondata has 500 calories in 100grams, and a bigmac only has that half that, sadly. i think unless you soak the nuts, you'll be very tired. statistically besides lard, nuts sadly are the highest calorie food. i think also according to nutriton data, that 100grams of an apple has more sugar concentration than a 100grams of cokecola.
Hrmmm, while learning to foraging more then half the edible plants I find in the wild need to be cooked according to my foraging books.
It is probably a "chihuahua" question... but... wouldn't it be better/ok to eat a cooked wild food then a raw store bought food? I can forage tons of sow thistle.... tons of cleavers.
Not all wild greens are bitter, I can eat cattails hearts like they were lettuce. omg I LOVE them! =D Anacua berries aren't sweet so I am going to eat more of them. =^-^=
He mentions the indigenous people getting sick when their brews are taken away from them (a couple of vids back I think). Isn't this a typical sign of alcohol withdrawal? Isn't this why alcoholics are taken off gradually or with drugs, because they would physically suffer and get sick otherwise? How does it demonstrate the righteousness of the action of drinking a lot of alcohol?
I think he distinguished fermented fruits from commercial alcohol like vodka. It's similar to table salt which has 2 elements to sea salt which has upwards of 85. The simplified versions are unbalanced since they are heavily concentrated and don't come with elements that counter-act the negative aspects.
the durian (random example, they probably did, but you get my point) grow in the same geographical area? so would I as a wild human be able to ever combine these two foods in a day, a week, a year? What about recent findings about a study concerning han chinese vs tibetans. Genetic changes can occur at far quicker rates than previously thought. So if we've been making sweet fruit for 10 000 years, that could be enough for our genetic makeup to change.
I kind of agree with him. I am mostly raw (vegan) at the moment, but I have considered several things, though I don't know whether they are only based on knowing half the story about something or not. I am low fat, and sometimes I wonder about my consumption of EFA. Sure, back when people may not have consumed them in large amounts, but did they think as much ... I have to study for hours a day and my brain may need to replenish its EFAs often. And what about fruit combos. Did the banana and

I really enjoyed this talk. I had to go on a search for the origin of the modern apple in the middle of it . Seems we credit the Romans with the grafting and cultivating . There is an interesting story on the golden delicious , seems as this was a gift !
I think that very early in our history Humans started to move into cities . This was done for a dual purpose of protection and then domination of others to acquire resources women they saw desirable etc ..
@theRshi ~ My personal understanding is that we would do well to re-wild ourselves in a way that brings balance... that I for one, (as Daniel also mentioned in this vid) will not be leaving my life to go live off the land in the mountains completely unplugged from the grid any time soon, but I can incorporate some of the wild back into my life.. and that this will help to sustain & connect me back into the earth. Which in turn will provide health, vitality, & personal empowerment :)
@theRshi Not really, I am from east African background and in my family's tribe there is a man who is 108 years old, 109 to be this year. Living longer is not an aim, frankly the sooner you are gone maybe the better you off (since the world is going through turmoil right now). I know it sounds crazy, but the western culture sold us an idea that wild human beings are uncivilized, untamed and gave us this neon lit city with sky-scrappers.
@theRshi the stats for mortality and life expectancy for indigenous and modern industrialized humans are adjusted on both ends (infant mortality & causes of death) for both groups adn conclusions are most often politicized. . evidence does not support the idea that indigenous or late paleolithic peoples had shorter lives
@theRshi The short answer is No. You can read Blue Zones. The people that live the longest eat raw food. Usually, only a few local traditional foods. Big Pharma sells more people's health back in pills and that keeps most unhealthy people alive longer. Another is - In Defense of Food.
@theRshi But is it really that fun to be a senile 90 year-old with adult diapers? I'd rather just live a good fun life and be connected with people and the rest of nature too. 60-70 years is pretty good I'd say.
@theRshi Hell no. I don't know where you got that info.Heres an example.Look up Li Ching-Yuen.The diet that the Chinese eat today he rejected. He was said to have lived 250 yrs. Theres a lady in africa who they say is at least 10.They can't validate these ages because they didn't start documented ages in these regions until maybe 1870 or sometime like that. Although hers is documented from that time on we know she is atleast 130 because she is still living.
@theRshi To take it further Gorillas live in the wild for 140 years atleast.Gorillas in America live 50 yrs top. Why because we feed them what they don't naturally eat.The animal planet claim they eat bugs for protein. They don't say they eat leaves and happen to eat bugs because they are on the leaves. They act is if gorillas hunt down bugs for protein. It makes no sense.Humans eat steak and can't get as big as gorillas and i'm supposed to believe gorillas got that big from eating bugs?
