I recently learned about the Rwanda Genocide during English class, we watched a movie called Hotel Rwanda and did a town hall meeting and each person in the class got a role like tutsi rebels, peacekeepers etc and I learn a lot. It made me think of how fortunate I am. Watching this video makes me upset because its just ridiculous, people will do anything to gain power and control. Killing children, raping women. Its stupid.

@ArTepRa Although I agree with part of the statement of precolonial Africa. When colonizers first inhabited to areas they disregarded the ethnic and tribes lines. And many of the governments elevated certain tribes while discriminating against others. Not to mention the involvement of the of western powers in support of dictators, resource exploitation, and a host of other problems. The Belgian regime instituted an ethnicity in order to afford the Tutsi greater privileges for one, but also to have them govern the Hutu so as to enforce their governance through indirect rule. In essence, colonialism instilled customary law that gave Tutsi a superior position to the Hutu, and that was the model which the genocide was based on.

8000 INNOCENT PEOPLE were killed EVERYDAY for 100 days and the world sat back and watched in silence. A nation shed tears of blood but NO ONE answered. @Houshalter I do not believe it was inefficiency or clumsiness that kept the UN and US from intervening, it was shere indifference as they stepped back, not only to allow it all to happen, but to prevent other nations from intevening to stop it. I recently learned about the Rwanda Genocide during English class, we watched a movie called Hotel Rwanda and did a town hall meeting and each person in the class got a role like tutsi rebels, peacekeepers etc and I learn a lot. And many of the governments elevated certain tribes while discriminating against others. The reason this keeps happening is people refuse to understand 'why' and choose to distnace themselves from the guys doing this. Maybe you should read up on the rwanda and tell me if you do not feel ashamed that this was allowed to happen.

You know what amazes me in these 3rd world countries. They all kill one another due to religious beliefs. All kinds of countries try to send help and relief in most cases. Food, clothes, etc. Now why when a country in this shape, like so many others, without even enough to eat, do these people keep breeding like rabbits, and why are methods of birth control never put into place.

@TheGreasepit So foolish. This Rwandan genocide goes back to the days of colonialism. The Belgian regime instituted an ethnicity in order to afford the Tutsi greater privileges for one, but also to have them govern the Hutu so as to enforce their governance through indirect rule. In essence, colonialism instilled customary law that gave Tutsi a superior position to the Hutu, and that was the model which the genocide was based on.

The Jews and the victims of the Holocaust were not better than these people. This may not have been a worldwide issue like the Holocaust was but it was still devastating.

You would think after WW2 that the supposed UN would do all it could to prevent something similar from happening AGAIN an AGAIN Hitler, Stalin, Saddam, Idi Amin, Rwanda, Darfur, Pol Pot, many others. 8000 INNOCENT PEOPLE were killed EVERYDAY for 100 days and the world sat back and watched in silence. A nation shed tears of blood but NO ONE answered. Young children had their futures slashed with machetes and NO ONE bothered. Just because we are African doesn't make us unimportant. We are ALL human beings made it the very image of God. @frenlyguy95, what I mean is that the structure of the UN is less then optimal and yet no one does anything to try to fix it. The UN may enevitably fail anyways, but it's better then nothing.

1 of the main reasons why the US did not intervene because the events of Somolia was still fresh in our minds (Black Hawk Down, dead US Soldiers being dragged in the streets etc.) that event happened 6 and a half months prior to the genocide of Rwanda

@Houshalter I do not believe it was inefficiency or clumsiness that kept the UN and US from intervening, it was shere indifference as they stepped back, not only to allow it all to happen, but to prevent other nations from intevening to stop it. Mainly because the actual event of the Rwanda genocide aided in lowering the world population.

I was a soldier with the U.N from Australia when this happened. our hands were tied by the U.N. We were outnumbered, must off us live with guilt every day now and I now have nightmeres reliving what i witnessed over their. I hope the world never forgets this act.
