Awww shit. Don't make it seem like black people can't live up to and exceed any european or otherwise standards. Isaac's always been a jive ass cat to my ears, and everytime I've ever heard him play in over a decade it's been that way, and this isn't any exception. The man does have ability and technique, I'd love to see him reach his potential someday, and solidify his concept into something listenable if not memorable.
4:31 says is all for me. That note is pure Isaac.. The sound quality really is poor though here - seems like it affects the musicians as well. I have been to the bakery many times.
This guy is jive and needs to learn the basics on how to play the trombone.... What a bunch of bullshit... the guy can't play worth shit. He acts like he can though...
Having worked with and played with isaac, i can tell you personally that what you hear is maybe a tiny portion of what this dude is capable of. I played with his big band, and he had no pianist. The dude sat down and played some very interesting a nd talented stuff on piano as well. He's not just blowing out of his ass he has the theory to back it up. Different cats have differnt sounds, that's what makes music such a beautiful thing. You should hear his compositions..BRILLIANT!
I really don't understand all the negative comments against Issac. Elliot and Issac are not the same, period! They don't approach harmony the same, use the same articulations, or even use anything CLOSE to the same equipment. As for there being 100s of trombone players that sound like Issac, that is ridiculous. I know 100s of trombone players, literally-and Im hard pressed to think of 1 that sound 'like' Issac.
I can tell who has influenced Issac - MAYBE - but that's ALL of us who really study this music and love it. We have our influences but don't sound just like anybody. All these negative comments are immature at best and most likely just jealousy or ignorance....not sure which. Come on folks, constructive criticism is one thing but dissing the guy based on the third party titling of a video is over the top. Issac, Elliot, Conrad, Westray, Wycliff, and many others....Do YOUR thing!
This Is Issac at home working stuff out. If you hear him at a gig you would be suprised. His sound is massive. He could play a lot more soulful than Elliot Mason. Ive heard them both Live plenty of times. Elliot repeats the same stuff every time. It gets boring after awhile. I feel like if elliot took more time to develope his solos he would be more interesting to me. Issac can be very interesting. I would say that this video doesnt do him just. Check him out live though.
Listen to Elliot Mason if you want to hear how it's done..... don't get me wrong, I wish I could be half as nimble as Isaac can do on the bass trumpet!- and that's got buttons! Anyway, In a heavyweight bout for the Trombone championship of the world I reckon Mason would win by KO in Bar 3.
Well now. Is music performance now reduced to an athletic competition rather that an expression of creative artistry? Don't miss the meaning and purpose of 'music.'
Of course not! This was just a way of letting people know about elliot mason. I would never go as far as to bad mouth Isaac (like some of the obviosly inadequate musicians on here) but in my humble opinion Elliots artistic approach to jazz is more creative. Newer, more unique lines and phrases expressed through a more pesonalised tone and command of tone colour. When I listen to Isaac I am digging it but it all sounds a little familier.
My original comment (slightly in jest) was also touching on the physical stature of these two great trombone heavywieghts.! - have you seen the size of Elliot....?
Respect to your comment, I haven't missed the pupose of music, but I think you may have missed my sarcasm.....?
There are literaly hundreds of trombone players who sound just like this guy.Its hard to be impressed with him after youve just heard Elliot Mason.I would give him a c+if i were to grade him.He should start transcribing Elliots solos because Elliot is the new charlie parker of bone playing right now.
This video doesn't show how really great Isaac is. I saw him play "I Remember Clifford" and was absolutely blown away by his thoughtfulness and knowledge of the jazz language. This is at the Jazz Bakery in LA which sounds awful.
This is a virtuoso? This guys pretty good but in my oppinion not a vituoso. When i hear the word virtuoso i think of wynton playing carnival of venice or John Coltrane.
Wow you are scary. You don't know me but yet KNOW I can't outplay your boy. That & your other elitist comments beg for negative and yes, rude feedback. ALL of art is an opinion. Mine is as valid as yours. Don't come on like an authority. You are 22 and I am 62 and have heard much more music than you-live & recorded. Believe it! An old saying-"With age comes wisdom." Perhaps with you, age will come alone. For the record, in South Florida, you can hear me on 'bone & electric bass-live & recorded.
First of all, your opinion was an insult. To dislike is different than to insult, To say you dont like his sound is an opinion. To say his sound is amateur is an insult. Its the difference between telling someone they are unaware and calling them stupid. How can you be that old and not know that the way you present a statement is as important as the statement itself? And now you insult me too proving my point more. I hope you are kidding about being 62.
better than most trombone soloists at jazz events, he can definitely play, although It sounds like he's smudging some things, and the solo runs too long, seems to lack clear direction, wouldn't call him a virtuoso just yet.
First of all he has an amateur sound. Absolutely no ideas, no pitch and for sure, no time. In essence, he has potential-nothing else. Just more new shit masquerading as music. This guy sucks. Kinda like rap.
you think you can do better? have you played with slide hampton? have you played in the san francisco jazz collective? i bet u cant even out play his resume let alone isaac himself. if u think he cant play then put a video of yourself up so we can see if youre better than this guy. and some rap is really good if you open your mind to new ideas but you dont seem like the open minded type.
Who said I was a player. You don't have to give birth to know an ugly baby when you see it. And for the record, you seem like a pretty close minded guy yourself. What, if I don't like Isaac I don't count. Are you some kind of neo nazi?
what i was basically sayin is if you cant outplay him (and i know you cant), then shut up! dudes a great player. you dont have to like him but to say he cant play is something different altogether. you didnt say "i dont like his approach to this tune" or "i wish he played more diatonically". you said "this guy sucks". isaac has played with all of the big name cats and is respected greatly by jazz artists. he is anything but amateur. you had more of an insult than an opinion and it was quite rude
@bambi5287 well obviously no one gives a shit what you have to say so you know........so I mean in the majority of commentators books I guess your'e opinion doesn't count....on this video anyway haha
yo bambi, you shouldnt say these things, ill bet he can rip a standard like no other as well man, its a completely different style man. to get to this level, you have to know your shit...
Anyone who bad mouths this cat is a $hit head. I've seen him cut sax palyers. Yeah he's not as clean as the studio trombone Fu*k's out here in LA but at least he's doing something new and innovative.
Respect to Isaac as a great player. I sometimes like his edge and his raw tone, but new and innovative....? come on.... I've been hearing these same sequences of notes since the Jazz/Funk early days. Isaac executes these lines with impressive technical accuracy, style and groove, but a true artist doesn't draw round a picture that has already been painted.
as scary as it sounds i dont even think hes 30 yet and if he is hes not too much passed 30. hes gonna be around for a looooooong time. im happy cuz hes killin but im mad cuz im a trombone player
exactly, when a player makes you say "oh shit, he's good, i can't do that" you gotta go in a direction a little different. Eubanks kills but he sounds very different then the old school guys, try n be like all the good cats, then go a different direction.
You guys bad talking this dude and giving him advice?!?!? This guy is a heavy and respected by the heavyweights ARTIST out here. Maybe he would get third chair in you stellar University band in your opinion huh?
Wow, nice to see negative comments on one of the few 'bone players I've heard actually saying something. Gee, boys, why don't you close the text book and open your ears. Nice to hear I'm not the only guy listening to Frank Lacy. Drones take note, you might just learn something valuable.
Isaac's playing for God, like Trane.
