the reason he didn't take the gun was that you put the wrong one on the table.

right at the beginning of the level, if you turn to the left in that entrance hall,, there's this kind of cabin, and when you talk to the guy behind the counter, he'll give you "your" jacket (i doubt it' 47's^^). anyway, there's a gun it that jacket which you automatically take with you. and that gun looks exactly like the replica. if you switch these two gun, it should work.
