A nice song turned complete turd by Pavarotti's appearance, marking the end of U2 who never released a good record since. "Passengers" album was an attempt to acknowledge Brian Eno as a real band member (he was the brains behind "Achtung Baby" and "Zooropa", U2's best stuff). Having him as a band member didn't really wor.
@selektorat don't be daft. Pavarotti's a long time dead now. Not his fault that U2's best days are behind them. It happens all bands that don't disintegrate early. Look at the rolling stones for instance. BTW Pavarotti's singing is the best thing about this track. It goes into a new dimension when he starts.
The Sarajevo street footage was shot by a guy called Bill Carter, a young American who was in the city for 6 months during the siege and contacted U2 about doing something public to try and raise awareness across the world about what was going on there during that appalling time in the early 90s. He wrote a very moving and very honest book about his time there called 'Fools Run In'.
I think the images are from the doc "Miss Sarajevo", for wich the song was made. The contest was made under fire in time of war. The story makes the song so much better.
I wouldnt know if its from a documentary but the part where the late great Pavarotti does his piece while the screen shows a wall w the phrase Welcome to Sarajevo, that my bro, brings tears to my eyes.
This is definitely from a documentary called "Miss Sarajevo". All songs from the "Passengers" album/project (U2, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanoois and several celebs like Pavarotti) are from independent films or documentaries. This was, for obvious reasons, the most popular song on the album and, as titosabugo says above, "The story makes the song so much better". Very true. I get chills every time I hear this song.
The entire album is excellent for those that haven't heard of it. Check it out!

Pavarottis voice on this song is so haunting when you watch the video.
A truly amazing song with such a sad, sad video.
