  • by covering he is honoring jimi hendrix, SVR IS AWESOME

  • o shitt a octavia!!!!!AAAAHHHHHHH love it

  • Gone 20 years now. Hard to believe.

  • srv will live forever threw the fingers of the young who have the talent thank you God for this man, him and Jimi are very proud of the gitarist that fine them amazing!!!!!

  • he is the best there was r.i.p stevie

  • I WANT THAT TONE!!!!!!!!

  • When SRV passed,, The Guitar greats of our time said by far Stevie was THE GREATEST !!! Eric Clapton said it best, Stevie was dialed in, he could just play forever !! Well I wish Stevie was still playing !!

  • @srvcarl77 that was a amazing tribute i have on tape love it!!!!!!

  • One of my fav guitar icons and probably the number 1 guitarist who ruled the '80s

  • SRV played Hendrix better than Hendrix played Hendrix!

  • @tomdilello damn that's they best way i've ever heard it put

  • hey three people missed the like button:0

  • my middle name is named after him its vaughan

  • When he turns the octavia on at 4:55 I am shitting my pants!

  • There's probably 100's of bar bands around the world doing covers of this song at this moment and sounding decent doing it. What's the big deal about this version? It's pretty much a straight up knock off of Jimi's studio version.

  • @1257trebor the big deal is that this version is way better!!!

  • @1257trebor First of all SRV NEVER played ANY cover note for note !!! ANYBODY can hear that,, so for you to make that comment is just stupid !! He took their song and he changed it to his version! I DARE ANYONE to find a musician that doesn't cover their idols !!!! EVERY muscian is motivated by someone they have heard and loved their style of playing !! Listen to songs that SRV covered of Buddy Guy, Stevie's are different in many ways both vocally and guitar wise!

  • @srvcarl77 YADA

  • Whatch out fucking BMG might take this video off lets enjoy it then

  • this guy is amazing praise the almight srv guitar

  • never ceases to amaze. God bless ya, Stevie.

  • hes using the bridge pickup, instead of the neck, interesting...

  • @matthew909 has a little more high end on that pickup so it has a little more expression with a wah pedal... only reason i think he would use that pickup...

  • God

  • 2 cigars in 7:28 minutes, I can get cancer while listening to this kind of wah-wah pedals... I came basically. Like a pig of course... 7 min orgasm.

  • In My Opinion,...The Best Version of Voodoo Chile He Did Live, and He Loved Playing There At "Austin City Limits",..This was a Few Months Before his Death. Now He is Rockin In God's Blue's Heaven

  • Stevie being Stevie. Such a legend!

  • @LP1294 lol

  • this version sounds a lot heavier. it sounds like hes using a lot more distortion than normal

  • Oh yeah! Stevie was using every effect pedal he had the last couple years of his life when he performed Vodooo

  • its because hes using a fuzz face and then throws an octavia in there sometimes

  • and hes using more then one Ibanez Ts-9 tubescreamer :-)

  • Yep he uses one for a clean boost and then a slightly dirty boost.

  • My GOD those strings he's using are like cables. He must have it tuned down to be able to bend notes the way he does.

RIP Stevie - love your stuff

  • @MorroccoM13 yep down a half step plus huge bass frets

  • I could watch him all day. If he comes on the radio when I'm driving..I have to pull over...seriously..I don't know why .

  • Nothing was hard for him to play and this song least of all. This song was the only one he played on every gig throughout his whole and short career. He knew he played it good and he loved playing it. And he made it look as easy and effortless as walking in the park...that was one of his trademarks. Oh, and he hated it when guitar players were called "gods"

  • Comment removed

  • yeah I read somewhere about him using 18's on the high e

  • That is not true, the highest he ever used was 13, and the lowest was 11's.

  • @Hippyy123 Not true. He tried a 19p once. I read it in an interview he did...came straight from the man himself...

  • It is true, on more than one occasion he used gauges from 18-72

  • Wow! What a performance!

Don't know them all, but there can't be many guitarists at this level - ever?

  • in my opinion stevie and jimi cant ever be touched.greatest ever to pick up the instrument.period.

  • Fantastic!!!

    Grandma Mary

  • man those are some heavy gauge strings mans got power in those hands to killin it like that

  • Yeah i use 12's going on to 13's but my pathetic hands aint in in the same realm of the power as stevies.

  • lol ok thats very true but all i was doing was complementing SRV on how good he was and saying he did a very good job of sounding like hendrix and btw i do listen to alot of SRV and you can tell alot of techniques used by SRV where first used by hendrix but i dont wanna start an argument im just saying great job SRV your sick, and too bad your dead like every other great musician (N)

  • amazing almost better than handrix himself as this song lol u can defently reconize that hendrix was his favorite player he plays like him so much with more blues inspired licks

  • 2:04 drops his pick. It's happened to me. That's why you see picks taped to the microphone.

  • no he doesn't , thats his downstroke rake stuff and effects adjustments. God i wish i saw him live , something you would saviour for the rest of ya days.

  • B.B. King once called Stevie Ray Vaughn a "fantastic black blues in a white mans body".

Before you make this into a racial statement, It's NOT.

It is a statement of fact.......SRV was possibly the best blues player to ever sling a guitar.

  • This is my favorite version of this song by far. Oh and only Stevie could take this classic and take it to a whole other galaxy!

  • no wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Never. You think Hendrix wounds better than SRV in his voice???????/ rofl

  • first time i've ever seen stevie use the bridge pickup!

  • yeah, and he is gettin' that HUuuge tone... some answers on that?!

  • well he used heavy strings and played through two TS808s, as well as using some top of the line amps. The rest (most of it) was in his fingers...that's where it really started from. I don't know why everyone has to compare him to Hendrix. Really, they were apples and oranges. Arguing over who is better is the definition of the term "exercise in futility". Both were better than those who sit there and argue over skill. Both changed the blues, both are great listening material.

  • Bob, you have pie?

  • and SRV kicks ass

  • I have a sense of humor, I'm fuckin with you aren't I. Ha Ha. Look I'll give you all you want, I got all day.

  • You got no case to rest stupid.

  • Ha Ha, I'm just jerkin your chain. Stop trying to sound like your so smart, Your Not. Hendrix & SRV will always be linked no matter if you like Hendrix or not so get over it.

  • No, what makes a Hendrix fan jealous?

  • What makes a Hendrix fan ignorant?

  • Been reading a couple of your comments, what you got againts Hendrix & Hendrix fans?

  • the title says it all.

    STEVIE.

    RAY.

    VAUGHAN.

  • Why all the comparisons guys? all the Musicians mentioned are great and unique in their own way. Basically it's about personal preference, I love all styles and can appreciate all of the great players. For the record I love the blues and Stevie is my preference. So feel lucky to have all these talented people so sit back listen and enjoy.

  • Wikipedia?? I don't know as I don't use it... It's full of misleading information. I'll check out "Paco de Lucia" I'd say he's amazing... Have good weekend man!! :)

  • Correction I do know who Joaquín Rodrigo was, he was composer of classical music and a virtuoso pianist totally different musical styles, what a comparison... And for your information I am a huge fan of BOTH musicians and have studied both their styles for years, so I think I know the differences and comparisons between both of of them.... Adios amigos!!

  • Lord have mercy......

...SRV and Jimi shined so bright and left us too soon.......

  • This looks like an outtake from his 1989 Austin City Limits special, as it is not on the compilation tha twas released on the DVD version.

  • You are correct. This was released in 2000 on the SRV box set

  • One can compare both these players if one wants too, I personally dont like to but people do out there, hey thats life...

Bringing a classical player into the mix is extremely futile or as you say... Infantile. Sure why not bring some jazz players or fusion jazz players in, hell now that were here lets get some neo-classical people in along with my Aunt Sally shes plays the spoons very well....

  • Ok lets talk about Styles shall we, you do know what styles are right? Hendrix and Vaughan are both rock blues players; they play similar styles, techniques and have the same influences....

  • No it's just infantile to give an answer like the one you did... do please try again...

  • a master @ work

  • This is just damn hyptnotic, played with more soul than Hendrix, more exotic as well, it's been awhile, but RIP SRV, you are the best that ever was! Peace.

  • More soul then Hendrix?? Says who you?? Why compare both versions all the time... bloody childish man!!

  • Well lets see. A comparison is warranted 1.because both are guitar greats, and 2. SRV is playing a Hendrix tune, yea that does sound chilich, pardon, bloody childish. And I believe this area is for personal opinions and comments, which is why I commented. Everything I wrote is my opinion only, my opinion only, so YES, SAY'S ME! So now you see, we each have an opinion and maybe we each are, or are not, "bloody Childish man"! Peace

  • Well I understand and yes of course you have your own opinion, and that's cool... But to compare these players just doesn't make any sense at all, I love them both but think Hendrix wins out here...

  • both hendrix and srv were in the clouds with their soul, and this is why you cant judge which one was higher - because you cant see past the clouds..

in my humble opinion, srv was better than hendrix both in terms of GUITAR and MUSIC, because he is this wonderful hybrid of albert king, unique blues rock and an almost purist blues influence.

jimi was more of an expansion of buddy guy, if you know what i mean.

and if not, research about who was 'hendrix' before hendrix played music.

  • Well here's my opinion.. Hendrix was before Stevie Ray Vaughan BOTH are great players. If Jimi hadn't been around there would be no Mr Vaughan and no one making comparisons on youtube. Hendrix was influenced by all the same blues players and Stevie. Hendrix was more original, better song writer, a Guitar pioneer also people forget he did it all in only four years. Besides Hendrix "Machine Gun" is breathtakingly amazing I'd like to Stevie attack that...

  • See, back to our difference in views, and I appreciate the fact that You are cool with me having an opinion but you actually prove my point. You just said "I love them both but think Hendrix wins out here... " When push comes to shove, we all make judgements, it's in our nature. I appreciate your thoughts more than I thought I would . We each like them both and it's rock and roll anyway. I will not argue this issue anymore, You're point is well taken and peace, may they be playing in heaven.

  • You make an excellent point. I'd anything to see them jam in Heaven (If there is a Heaven) who knows... I love them both as blues players anyway peace my friend take care... :)

  • damn! how does he bend those gauge 13 strings with such accuracy?! even if his guitar is tuned a half-step down, it will still be hard to bend. SRV is the best!!!

  • i think he might of already changed to 11.5s by this time.( to save his fingers)

  • Either way, the man had fingers of steel. I run between 9s on my tele and 11s on my Eric Johnson signature strat, and the difference is crazy. That he could EVER get under those 13s is just insane.

  • He also used larger frets too to help with the bends. He also had crazy huge gorilla hands as well. He is definitely one of the gods of the guitar world. My hero I would say.

  • SRV ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hard as it may be concentrate on the drummer, I really rate him. Bass is good too! Master stroke by Stevie having these two backing you.

  • Reason why he is that much better in this performance in Austin is simply b/c he's sober.

I can't believe he could play that well even drunk.

  • VOOdoo Chile

  • the craziest thing about SRV, is that you can learn every note that stevie has ever played but never quite sound like stevie.

his viruosity goes much deeper than his technical ability. notes bent directly from one's soul are always the hardests ones to imitate. IMO.

  • When Hendrix plays this song I immediatly switch to another song..'cause i dont really like the song...

But when its played by stevie...it has that extra...touch..;that makes me listen to it...

  • its more rhythmic too. i like it better.

  • hes so good its scary

  • La rompe!

  • SRV never ceases to amaze me. This was a man born with music in his soul. I hope he's kickin' ass at the great gig in the sky!

  • Yo creo que cuanto más parecido a Hendrix tocás este tema más mufado quedás... mirá cómo terminó pobre SRV!!

  • Greatest version ever.

  • temaso vieja !!!

  • 3 words : Genius , Class ,God

  • Really sweet! SRV rocks! 5/5

  • High Gain is not really all that true....Most of the clipping and overdrive you hear is from the fuzz pedal he has activated and Overdrive from the marshalls he was using at the time...maybe a ts9

  • ts 808 I think......great pedal!!

  • Not marshalls...dumbles. He only used marshalls (majors, superbasses and the like) in the early 80s.

  • Stevie is using a Vox TS-10 Classic here. You are right about the Dunlop, he used a Cry Baby before he switched to Vox

  • Plus the Dunlop Fuzz Face and the Octavia.

But looking it all together, a great chain of pedals and nice setup.

  • how the fuck did he get so good at guitar and be able to sing at the same time, with his eyes almost closed the whole time...

  • He had the gift. He was the one.

  • You got that right. He surely was the one!

  • neo ?

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVIE

  • HELL YEAH! SRV USING HIGH GAIN!!!!!!!

  • pig god this movie is very funny... steve ray vaughan the best guitar player of the world ohh pig!!

  • You know this isn't only the best version of this song (and I'm a huge Hendrix fan) but I think its probably the best version of any song of any kind i've ever heard!!!! I'd never get sick of listening to that tone, RIP SRV!!!!

  • u know if i was listenin to this on my ipod i would have thought he was playin a les paul that tone is soooooooo thick

  • soooo gooooood!!!

  • he has given blues others meanings

    wonderful

  • In Remembrance of the heart and soul of a guitar. Missed forever Mr. Stevie (October 3, 1954 - August 27, 1990)

  • I was watching PBS fundraising with this being showcased (SRV Voodoo chile) The host says, "this is a great song Voodoo Chili" and no shit she pronounced it like the soup Chili! OMFG SRV dear God was the best.

  • BEST GUITAR PLAYER TO EVER LIVE

  • me too... ;)

  • it's Voodoo Child (Slight Return) not Voodoo Chile. Voodoo Chile is a completely different song that Hendrix wrote.

  • Stevie's was Voodoo Chile. It's listed like that on the back of Stevie's album Couldn't Stand The Weather and he says Chile when talking about it in interviews.

Stevie's version is totally different than Hendrix's too. And of course Stevie never played any song the same way twice

  • the information says vodoo chili or chile

  • perfect!

  • i think hes using a fuzz face.. i like it when he sounds the other way

  • holy shit, that lick at 0:47!!! like, what the fuck is that?

  • It is a pretty badass lick, he uses it a lot in this song (and a version of it in a lot of his songs). Its running the pentatonic. I don't know if you literally wanted to know it but I'll put it anyway in case someone does.

  • he "walked" the pentatonic scale.. his speed is incredible...

  • One of the best (other than Hendrix)

  • some opinions are wrong, yours

  • A wrong opinion if there ever was one. And there is, yours. How stupid can one person get?

  • By far the most aggressive version ive seen him play. What a loss! I've obsessed over this gentlemen for the past 7 years, he's my idol! Hope I see him in heaven.

  • the fastest version ive ever seen stevie perform of this magical song but yet he still manages to bring it nicely over the 7 minute mark that for me is unbelieveable and shows his real improvisation skills and his feel of music and any song he plays.RIP SRV

  • I actually perfer this version to all SRV versions of this song

  • it's on the austin city limits video.

  • Does anyone know where he's performing in this video? I'm hoping to find an mp3 of this particular performance, not of the cover. This one is faster than any of the mp3s I've heard.

  • It was part of the tv series Austin City Limits on PBS. SRV and Double Trouble live from Austin Texas.

  • Why won't this thing let me post?!

  • I have a link to the audio I made of this version, but I can't post it. Craptacular.

  • Someone want to pm me for the link, and then post it? The comment system is being retarded.

  • Link is in the profile. Do they allow link posting in comments?

  • actualy voodoo chile is a complete different song this is voodoo child

  • actually this is voodoo chile slight return

  • srv dose it way better than hendrix

  • lol...

  • zebolach; LOL??? Well, S.R.V. DOES do it way better than Hendrix!

I guess it's all based on opinion though.

  • SRV do it good =D

But you can't compare to Hendrix =x

  • well, if it's opinionated, I really like your opinion a lot, ha. S.R.V. was the best of the blues, right up there with all the major blues players like B.B. King, Muddy Waters, etc. For him to do Hendrix is just phenomenal, and he did it so well, truly better in my pov.

  • I don't care if you like Hendrix or not, but ol' Hendrix has nothing on this!

    R.I.P.S.R.V.!!!!

  • or the vintage style of BIg muff....

  • If you had to wrap up both Stevie and Jimi in one song this would be it without a doubt.

  • jesus christ, everytime i see him i see jimi hendrix, many people did the cover of voodoo child but he's the best

  • Voodoo Chile

  • yeah sorry man,you're right

  • MY HERO!!!!!

  • Like none other a true musical genius God Bless Stevie Ray Vaughn.

  • OoOoOoOoOoOoOo,nice

still johnny allen hendrix those it better
