@michaelmullins50 I kinda miss this car. My friends have owned it for a few years now and it's never let them down. I just saw it yesterday. I am surprised they never had a head gasket issue. I had a T1 tngine before in a Laser and it went through head gaskets about every 50K
i have a 1986 chrysler LeBaron gts turbo its got about 126,000 miles on it but its like a brand new car it runs like a top too and it does haul some ass if ya want her to lolwonderful little car and rare
I have a 1986 New Yorker. Not the turbo, though. I like my car, and the interior is in almost perfect condition. However, it was not passing the smog, and when I took it to get repaired, it came back with much less power. He adjusted the acceleration among the lots of other things he had to do with it, but now it accelerates slow. I couldn't even speed up fast enough to make it ahead of a big rig on the freeway on-ramp. Pretty bummed. I'm debating on whether or not restoring it or selling it.
(continued) It only had about 94,000 miles on it and is a very comfortable ride. It's amusing the looks I get when they see me (a 24 woman) behind the wheel. haha What do you think? Worth keeping?
I really like that car!! I had an old Chrysler Town and Country woody wagon with the same dash and the talking computer, but I sold it because wagons were not "in" when I was in highschool. Great vid!!
Thanks! I sold this car to my friends out of state a couple years ago and they are still driving it. I visited them a couple months ago and got to drive it, still sounds great!
It seems like the 1980's were more inspired by designing advanced technology than today. In the 1980's they made talking cars, like this Chrysler New Yourker, digital dahes. As the 1990s and the 2000s progress, they did away with all the advancements like that. Why?
Because consumers found the "technology" intrusive and it became unpopular.
Automobile technology continued to advance in the 90s and 00s. Additions like anti-lock brakes, huge advances in air bag technology, and crash protection are not even comparable to the 1980s.
We came out with new things like ABS in the 1990s and 2000s. But the obsession with technology like in the 1980s is not as much as it used to be in automobiles. The designs in cars of 1990s and 2000s make it seem like car design technology has been set back 10 years. Assuming that consumers didn't complain about the technology in the new yorker, perhaps a lot of todays cars would have it. Instead, today's cars just have beeps and not voices (except for navagation systems).
I am currently looking at a Le Baron Town & Country 85 model with 2.2 Turbo for sale where i live, it is practically in mint condition where it just had a major service on the engine and the tranny.
You sounds like and expert on these cars, so i will ask.
Are these good cars to drive, and are they reliable?
They are great cars if they were properly maintained. The only real weakness of these engines is a head gasket about every 60K seems to be normal, but that is not major. Everything else is very well put together. Go figure, and American car built in the '80s is high quality! lol
not yet but in a week or so i will have one up i will message you when its up i love these old chryslers hey i heard you had a 1985 Chrysler laser i loved those and would love to own one anyways i will let you know when its up!!
Blown head gasket IS a big deal! If it blows and you don't catch it soon enough, it'll ruin the head as well. You're looking at about $800 to have the head and gasket replaced. Been there done that with my 2.5L. However mine lasted 160k miles on my '92 Plymouth Acclaim.
IT wasnt a big deal on my Laser because the EVA said "Please check your coolant level" and I was able to figure out right away I had a blown head gasket. But most people dont have their noses under the hood all the time, so yea, for the most part it can be a big deal
Yeah, the wood/metal combination is very chique. And the digital dash is awesome! I love that old fashioned classy style :) Far better than the black-plastic-with-grey-accents modern stuff.
Lol yeah... Funny that you mention it. My '89 LeBaron Vert Premium had faux wood in the doors. Take a guess, it's printed on genuine...
metal =P
Talking about wasting natural resources... But I must say, it's really tough! Even most plastic interior parts are sealed on metal plates. And many dashboard/door faces are overlayed with genuine leather. I love how many quality materials are in it, and it wasn't a waste, since it's still here after 20 years :-)
I mean the 4 door LeBaron! It's the same as the Spirit, but with more luxury and the exterior is more stylish imo. If you can find a Landau, you're set. That one has a vinyl half-roof (like your NewYorker) and some other stuff.
Oh, duh! I forgot about the 4 door, and I have a friend that had one of those too. I am not partial to the 6 cyl engine in that configuration, but the 4 door LeBaron is a nice car. My GTC was a convertible, and it's just not my thing. It was a sweet looking car though, and had the 2.5 turbo.
The only thing I don't like about verts is that everything gets so humid when it rains. But I think driving in the open air is awesome. Even in winter days, just slide the heater to max =P And the girls love it of course.
The V6's trannies are pretty unreliable, for what I've seen and heard. I'd prefer a 4 cyl engine with 3-speed tranny, less delicate but extremely reliable.
Oh yeah, another thing: the noise. But with the soft coated plaid inner roof is isn't too bad. I'm still going to steal your NewYorker though lol, seems a great ride for the cold rainy days :)
I could never get the heat to work correctly in my 87 yorker.I replace about all you could replace. The a/c on the other hand you could pack deer meat in that piece of junk.
Could you do a 0-60 Video the next time that you are able to drive this car? (Or 0-whatever speed you're comfortable with.) My mom recalled that hers was fast. I just wanted to see it in action.
My parents had an 85 New Yorker w/turbo, and from what I remember, this vid is right on. I had an 87 LeBaron GTS w/turbo & 5spd. and I believe the manual trans. worked better with the turbo engine.
I asked my mom about the official name of the system that operated the shocks. She couldn't find the original options list, but recalled it as being in the "Easy Ride" Package, and being the "Level Loader" system. Options available must have been easy ride, the standard suspension, or the european sport style that your car has.
Come to think of it, I remeber hearing about the level loader system before. The white Mercedes I have in my videos has a self leveling suspension, I wonder if it's the same concept.
It might be. Does yours work during travel, or only when the car is in park? I can't remember exactly when my mom's car adjusted. I'll have to ask her.
You should check your car to see if it has the Automatic Adjustable Shocks that I was talking about. If you have it, it may have accidentally become disconnected before you got the car. The one on my mom's car became disconnected after she turned out of a low driveway or something. There should be a small black hose under the car near the fuel tank and the shocks-This should signify the presence of the system. Although, they still were optional and I'm not sure whether they were very popular.
My friends have the car now but I will mention that to them. The original window sticker is with the car, I know it wasi "european handling suspension" is that it?
It could have been. I'm not sure of the name that Chrysler gave to it. Either way, "European Handling Suspension" sounds like something that would be a joy to have. I'll have to ask my mom for the options list that came with the car. It should have the name on it somewhere. If she finds it, I'll tell you what I get from it.
I was wondering if you had ever done your own 0-60 test on this car. I would imagine that it must be fast. 7 seconds? My mom says that hers was pretty fast.
You're Right. Although, I suppose that even 8.5 seconds is somewhat quick for a heavy 1980's luxury car with a four cylinder engine, right? I suppose that the times could be pepped slightly with synthetic oils, etc, but probably not enough to change much. Either way, they're still great cars. There's nothing on the road today quite like them.
My mom used to have an '86 New Yorker with EVERYTHING-Leather,Turbo,Even a system that automatically "Aired up" the rear shocks when there was too much weight on them to keep the car level. She told me how she had once had it to 110 MPH and how she had beaten street racers all of the time with it in '86!
Right there with ya man. I miss these old K-based cars. They were pretty good stuff. I had 3, a '92 Acclaim, '90 Sundance, and '89 Lebaron convertible, all with the 2.5L and 3-spd. The Lebaron was the prettiest and fanciest, but also the most problematic. The other two were excellent basic cars though. Wish they still made them.
I think when said features were removed, that in-car technology went backwards...have you ever heard of anything else going from digital to analog? I haven't...
Digital gauges were all the rage in the '80's, but moving into the 90's analog became much more popular. That's the only example I can think of. I think most people prefer analog gauges over digital. I know I do.
You ever try to find junk yard parts for these? I have an 87 New Yorker and I swear it's next to impossible (at least around here) to find find a tail light.
I had another one that had over 175000 on the original turbo before i sold it. If you take care of it right, they last. Most people have no idea what a "turbo cool down" period is though, so then you had blown turbos.
I test drove an '84 yesterday. It only had 49K miles! The turbo gave the car a smooth drive, but the car had a few mech defects, and i'm not a big fan of the 84-85 body tail lights....
well, the axle probably needed to be replaced. The stereo did not work at all, the passenger side front window motor was dead, the vinyl top was really weathered. The clearcoat was fading too.
I test drove another one yesterday. This one is an 87, dark blue, with only 24K miles! The car belongs to an older lady, so it sat outside most of the time. She's gonna have it painted. I'm still debating whether to buy it or not...Drove nice though, going up a steep hill didn't even struggle.
As long as it was driven time to time it should be OK. Mine needed a lot of work right off the bat because it sat for years before I bought it. Brakes, radiator, belts, MAP sensor etc had all deterioriated.
my stock sebring does way better then this.. how much power does that turbo give the car? slap on an aftermarket turbo. ppl do this with the chrysler minivans and run 12 seconds. that newyorker would turn into a jet with the right mods.
I think about 146 HP, but its a heavy car with 3 speed auto. I do have plans for it, once I blow the head gasket (and they blow about every 50K miles) I will have the engine built from the ground up.
that car can run in the mid 13's if evreything is tuned perfect. brand new those cars ran 15 seconds stock. my old '90 lebaron ran 14.19 and i had the 4dr version same as the acclaim and spirit. had a digital dash too gotta love that. too bad i rolled it and hit a tree.
good for what it is

For what I was trying to show, that was all I needed. Check out the other 3 videos of the car also.

my stock sebring does way better then this.. how much power does that turbo give the car? slap on an aftermarket turbo. ppl do this with the chrysler minivans and run 12 seconds. that newyorker would turn into a jet with the right mods.

I think about 146 HP, but its a heavy car with 3 speed auto. I do have plans for it, once I blow the head gasket (and they blow about every 50K miles) I will have the engine built from the ground up.

when u rebuild it forged pistons and a kickass aftermarket turbo is must!

If I can make it a low-mid 13 second car, I will be really happy

that car can run in the mid 13's if evreything is tuned perfect. brand new those cars ran 15 seconds stock. my old '90 lebaron ran 14.19 and i had the 4dr version same as the acclaim and spirit. had a digital dash too gotta love that. too bad i rolled it and hit a tree.

My 3.3L Fifth Avenue accels faster than that with no forced induction and only like 140hp.

i sincerely doubt it. the 3.3L was a horrible gutless engine. not that i'm a fan of ricer four cylinders either. this 2.2L is a mitsubishi engine.

the 2.2 was a Chrysler engine i think (i believe its the Trans-4), but alot of other 4-cyls used in Chryslers weren't.

It is a Chrysler engine. I think there was a 2.6 that was a Mitsubishi engine that was used in these cars
