@pantherdash i bought the vynil "searching for the young..."when he came out the first time, i´m 43 and i´m from o´porto, portugal, and he still is one of the best albuns ever made, you know that feeling when you listen to something and you understand that that is it ! shit, this album is just great since the begining to the end!!
On 17 July 2010 there will be a gathering in Birmingham to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of 'Searching for the young soul rebels'.

@evertonio "Academic inspiration, you gave me none" - LOL (you're right mate)
Reading the lyrics to this song, I'm not even sure if it's a tribute to Geno Washington or a dig at him. Anyway, it's a great song with some of the most enigmatic lyrics of all time...
You've just made me spit my tea out laughing!!! I don't know if you're right or not, it's one of my favourites for sure.... But it's a great comment mate.
I bought the LP and it was when I was 18 and I had a pot to piss in )Goodjob&goodMoney)yeh still got the music on cd and its still great to hear every now and then brings back memorys.
back in 68 in a sweaty club, oh geno. before jimmy's machine and the rocksteady rub, oh geno. on a night when flowers didnt suit my shoes, after a week of flunking and bunking school. the lowest head in the crowd that night, just practising steps and keeping out of the fights. academic inspiration, you gave me none. you were michael the lover, the fighter that won. well now just look at me as i'm looking down on you. i'm not being flash, it's what i'm built to do
This song is a tribute to geno washington, who had a hit in the 60's with 'michael the lover'. Its on youtube - check it out. You will see where the inspiration for this song comes from!
sad all the yob fm radios stations in Australia only play comeon eileen/same for soft cell...try TORCH its superb. this is still ska as far as me and my skin/mod/rudeboy mates thought in the 80s :)
This is about Geno Washington, a US Soul singer the band admired. Washington was a major performer in the UK and played with Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. As Dexys Midnight Runners hit the big time, Washington's career faded - that's what the song is about
Geno Washington was great, but everyone seems to forget the Awesome RAM JAM BAND that backed him and also gave him his chance in the UK, he'd never have got no where without them.
Police accused of being fearful in tackling culprits over citys growing toll of racial assaults THE number of white victims of racist attacks in a Yorkshire city has risen 30 per cent in a year to more than 300 and police have been accused of being afraid to take on the culprits
Most Excellent. Saw these guys live at Wolverhampton Poly Student Union round about 1980 - awesome performance, and I remember being blown away by them. Almost thirty years on, I've just discovered this video and it sends a chill down my spine. Thanks for posting!
This song never cracked the Top 40 in Australia, the lyrics were considered 'controversial', maybe the greatest song never to reach #1, but I still remember going to the record store after school in 1979 to buy the 45, still plays just as good today.
Actually they returned to form with their 3rd album. Nothing like this but nothing like anything else you will hear, and with rollands amazin voice and lyrics!
Around this time Dexys were cool and it was cool to be a fan, then they went all dungarees and fiddles and if you still liked them it was best to downplay it.
The word "dungarees" sounds like "kangoroos", and for good reason. Yes, it wasn´t a sharp turn, look-wise. But - incredible horns to be heard here; bloody blow you away. The first album stays the best, in my opinion, only thing missing on it is Plan B.
Back in '68 in a sweaty club Oh, Geno Before Jimmy's Machine and The Rocksteady Rub Oh-oh-oh Geno-o On a night when flowers didn't suit my shoes After a week of flunkin' and bunkin' school The lowest head in the crowd that night Just practicin' steps and keepin' outta the fights Academic inspiration, you gave me none But you were Michael the lover The fighter that won But now just look at me I'm looking down at you No, Im not bein flash Its what Im built to do

I think it's a tribute, because Kevin Rowland (and the whole Dexys at a point, I'm not sure)
used to consider experience (particularly street experiences) a good school for life,
surely better than an academy

Oh Geno
This man was my bombers, my Dexy's, my high
Oh-oh-oh Geno-o

But they never knew like we knew
Me and you were the same
And now you're all over, your song is so tame, brrrrr
You fed me, you bred me, I'll remember your name
