  • Is it possible to use a combination of oil paint base and acrylic paint blend over?

  • I now use some of the Artisan water based oils, i did a test to paint on some gloss varnish afterwards and it wouldnt stick. what varnish do you use?

  • @Aerohype i get the feeling the citadel gloss varnish is very oiliophobic as it just forms globules on the top

  • Very nice man 

  • Great tutorials, would this work well for scything talons on Tyranids? im trying some at the moment and its somewhat successful but the darker parts seem washed out sometimes, any advice you would give there?

  • Do you use the Liquitex Slow-Dri Blending Fluid or the Slow Dri Fluid Retarder?

  • When I saw the video title in the Youtube recommendation box I first thought 'what in the world could this be?'

Now I know that it´s awesome (paintjob).

  • Whilst still getting them to pop as easily as the oils.

  • Useful tip: if you use water based acrylics (GW, Reaper, Vallejo) you can airbrush them to achieve a blended effect.

  • The reason you are fighting with the white acrylics so much is because they use opaque pigments for white. If you can find a nice bright slate grey that is transparent it should work much better...

  • I don't understand, how anyone can dislike this...

Probably jealous of the skills or something, superb tutorial.

  • Thanks Les for letting usknow about H2Oils. Do you currently use Artisan oils?

  • Attention: It seems Van Gough H2Oils are no longer available. Using ANY water mix oils will work such as W&N Artisan.

  • Love the look of this I am going to try it out - quick question though, do you do the shield lines the same way? They look kind of reflective/metallic and it looks really good.

  • Awesome vid. Where do you get your oils? Dick Blick, Daniel Smith, and others don't sell them.

  • AWSOME man, this helps me a lot!

  • need help!

what drying retarder brand are you using?

ive been trying a reaper drying retarder but it leaves a glossy finish which i dont want? any ideas for a better product or a way to get the non glossy affect?

  • @daviddillabough If you are playing with the models you should be spraying them with varnish after painting. And if you sprayed the model with Matte varnish, it wont matter what 'sheen' the model has while you are in the paint process. I use Vallejo retarder.

  • @awesomepaintjob regarding varnish, what would you recommend? I've only tried out the GW one, and it seemed to mess up my metallics (they ended up looking flat and dull). I know it's a good thing to do and would like to know a good one that doesn't screw up the work I put into it in the first place.

  • Incredible effect you created there.

  • Nice vid, with those oils could you tell me if you could make a NMM paint for gold? (Dark redy browns, orangy red, orangy yellows etc) Cause this is the sort of oil/paint I've been looking for. Also when blending I guess your just using water and apply a new colour when it's wet?

  • I just did a powerknife to test this technique, fortunately had some white oil paint around. Never thought they'd be suitable for minatures. I cant believe the difference. You are 100% correct on the use of oils. GW paints look a bit washed out in comparison

  • Great comparison between oils and acrylics. I like the look.

  • The oils are vibrant, but man those look chunky and thick on the model.

  • can you use normal oil paints (that are water based)

  • Hey, was shopping around for the oil paints your using and could find very little results.

After some researching, I found the product name changed from Van Gogh H2oil to Cobra Water Mixable Oils. Not sure if this was mentioned anywhere..

Anyways, great video and thanks a ton! =)

  • That was nice, but i might need your help,is that i wanted to pick pieces of plastic to make a thunder hammer, but how am i going to blend the colour if there are many pieces of plastic?

  • you did the "ice" thing here. can this be used to create a cartoony chrome?

  • Thanks dude! I've been trying my hand at wet blending for awhile without success. Your video however inspired me to try my hand at using my collection of water-soluble oil paints, which did fantastic!

  • Don't you find that oil paints are a little thick for miniatures? It's also sort of forever once its on. Might want to paint outside as well.

  • @terrenord Thin it if it's too thick. Nothing except some self etching primers are permanent on minis. No need to go outside, no fumes unless thinning with turps, hence the use of water based oils.

  • Wow, there are 10 idiots in the world. Great tutorial, Les!

  • You inspired me to buy a bunch of oils and test this out and it really worked so well. I'm a noobie painter but I'm getting sweet blends now with this so thanks! I find going over it lightly at the end with a clean drybrush flattens it out wonders!

Do you think it's possible to do NMM with oilt paints?

  • Yeah the oil painted one looked a lot sharper. Is there any chance you could do a video about your painting style/technique?

  • Haha we dont need rating u know ur the king^^

  • that looks awesome. i have always thought about trying out oils because, like you said, they don't dry as fast.

  • Simply awesome and helpful man! It'll take lot and lots of practice just to get the hang of this tecnique but its doable. Thanks.

  • @viggoyy fail...just fail...

  • I love the chrome effect you have done on the shield at 0:40

  • i thought u had to use special warhammer paints on figures?

  • @Adrian890722 While acrylics specific for modelism are the onoes you want to be using, they are not made only from GW. Vallejo is a nice alternative and many mini painters (including Warhammer players) use it. Some even mix the different brand to have more variety of colors. I suggest you see APJ video about paints for more information.

  • that is kool

  • Thanks for the tutorial

  • How long does it take for the oil paints to dry on average?

  • Have to ask Can you use the oil paints to paint a whole model and if so do you have a vid for it or could you do one ? I like the idea of the ease of the oils.

  • What the hell? Negro black? o.O

  • @viggoyy If you look at the other paints the colors are in spanish and english. Negro is spanish for Black.

  • @viggoyy lol dont worry not a black joke ^_^

  • @viggoyy Negro means black. Whats wrong with that?

  • @viggoyy You know, not every damned thing is about race. Good grief, it's a painting video...

  • @viggoyy do you know vallejo is a spanish company?

  • So, are you saying oils are better for minis painting?!

  • negro black ? oh snap

  • @sonikdude49 It has nothing to do with racism or anything, negro is just the spanish word for black.

  • @aldi2500 i know i was trying to get a laugh :(

  • i might try this for my grey knights nemisis fore weapons

  • Might have to get myself some oil paints, as every time I blend with acrylics, no matter how hard I try, I cant help but think it looks crap when I come back to it after it dries. It seems impossible to keep it wet long enough to leave a smooth finish after blending, especially on metal minis.

  • Hello Awesomepaintjob! Please please !!!! Pleaaaaaase more blending Videos!!! I need al lot more Videos form your first Class paintjobs. Its definatly fantastic what you to. For example. This wet Blending tutorial show very nice the mixing of the Wet pain. At least very nice in the last Minute where you go from dark to light and back. NICE 10 Point Rating!!!

  • That terminator is awesome ! Was it a commision or just for fun ?

  • Outstanding tutorial, never knew you could oils on minis and get a decent result, I GOTTA grab some of those haha. great work!

  • Thanks Les helped me a lot with my thunder hammers and your right the acrlyic paint white is really a pain to paint so much going back and forth!! Thanks

  • I would like to know what kind of gold did u use to paint ur Black templar's badge...

  • wats the music in the begging thats sick

  • It's a song I produced and composed called "the fall".

  • This is amazing, looks like an awesome way to do NMM, which brings me to a question, how would you do this effect but with gold using Van Gogh H2Oil paints?

  • O_O, that was an amazing tutorial, im going to this on my thunder hammers right now

  • Thanks for another great tutorial Les, this helps a lot!

  • GOD this video is awesome is fucking awesome¡¡¡ thank you for your videos and please dont stop¡¡¡ see us any of korps of krieg¡¡¡

  • whats the drying time. I've used oils back when I done art and they take forever... like years to dry propa... but not used water based oils... how do you get them to dry?

  • @MrNickRowe like I said, about 3-4 hours on the water oils but I usually wait 48 hours before finishing. Blow drying does not speed up the process sadly as oils have to oxidize to dry. That's why actual oils take forever. But painters like Mathiew Fontain only wait about 24 hours and coat them with Future floor wax.

  • Thanks for that -- another brilliant tutorial. :)

  • Dude, i always LOVE the music in your vids.. I need to have it =P

Also, really clear tutorial man. Found it really helpful, thanks.

  • @gazeebo88

if you like lees music you can download it from hes site...

  • @Malivictus almost.. the intro music was made by me but the music throughout the tutorial was generated with Sony Cinescore Software.

  • ahh cool Bro I will have to get me a copy I got copy of Sony vega pro to help improve my videos and it has a TONE thanks Les..please keep up the good work you do..Love the mini BTW..

  • thanks dude, this will help me with my terminators. i just want to know, what should i do if i only want to really use citadel and reaper paints, what are the equivellants.

  • @Altier215 Citadel equivalents are listed 30 seconds into the video.

  • Will any water mixable oil paint work like the W&N water mix oil paints

  • @nehctik1986 yep. Any oils really. the W&N water oils, think they are called Winton, are more expensive and the prices change for certain colors. I chose Van Gogh because every color is a little over $4 US at Blick Art for any color. Water Oils were chosen because I didn't want to mess with turpentine or mineral spirits in my house, and water is free :)

  • good vid, i always find nmm one of the hardest techniques to do.

  • I'm not a huge fan of nmm but this does look incredible

  • i have never thought of using oils... my mom used to paint with oils so im sure we got a ton of them laying around the house, and ill give it try :)

  • Awesome vid bro, this is the effect i have on my TH's and it looks awesome on the table.

  • good video m8

  • Great video but did you notice that with the tree different oils one of them said "NEGRO BLACK"...?

  • @thatsnotumpossible not on the oils but the Vallejo has the colors in Spanish and english. Negro is Spanish for Black.

  • cool. Now I know I'm not the only one who has be fast when using acrylic to wet blend.

  • Do you purchase those oils online? If so, do you mind sending me a link. Thanks for the video man you really rock.

  • Excellent video! Just a piece of advice for next time, show the two minis side-by-side for comparison a bit longer. In this video it's only seen for like half a second.

  • Nice, I've never used oil's on a mini before. I'm going to have to give this a try.

  • Nice Tut. What's the complete dry time for oils on a plastic mini?

  • @ZatoichiBlindSword

I was going to ask the same question.

  • @ZatoichiBlindSword about 3 days before I matte coat. That's why I do the oils first when doing multiple models.

  • looks more like a 3enchanted blue mix with 1Ice for gw,great tutorial I will be using it..5*

  • Right on man, you got a sponsor!

  • very good job, i also miss alot of the gw colours they took away, marine dark blue springs to mind, although im showing my age now, also the old paint pots would keep for ages compared to the current ones they use now, i get about 6 months out of some before they start to dry, cheers for this vid very helpfull ;)

  • Hi Les is Vallejo better than GW paints??

    (please response) ;)

  • @orcgobbo98 personally I love Vallejo over GW paints but that's just me. Both are good. I just switched to Vallejo because GW started to take colors away and Vallejo has all the GW clones including ones no longer made by GW.

  • yes

  • Great Talent. Thanks for sharing and being the inspiration you are bud.

  • Wax paper is baking paper for any Aussies out there.

  • Also you need to start posting your "black templar" marines up on your blog they are starting to look like you've got something crazy going on now :P and by crazy I mean awesome.

  • @twalks haha

  • Do you commonly use the oil paints on things like capes as well? REALLY interested in using a bunch of oil paints on my mini's now.

  • @twalks anything you need to blend on twalks. It's quick and easy. I hope this helps raise the table top standard if you guys can see how fast the effects are done.

  • @awesomepaintjob Love how you said that.. Its definatly what you do.. Raise the standards.. Open new avenues, and new ideas to this hobby..

    Thanks for the inspiration bud...

  • Excellent vid. Thanks fore posting it! Again I did learn something today! Keep up the good work.

  • Amazing tutorial. I only want the egolden recipe or some advices to get the olours I need(copper, platinum, silver, iron, steel, brass...)

  • your tutorials r always out standing i will be searching out the water based oils. resently paid 13 bucks to download a vid on how to air brush a landraider it was cool but i would give my left tyranid to see u do one.

  • BoW used baking paper on their palet last time, works similar to how you use it

  • Awesile job !!!

  • excellent video Les. I was so engrossed in watching I forgot I was eating a Calippo (icy pole) that I put on the table, it subsequently melted and dripped all over the floor! Thanks! ;p

  • As usual great tutorial.

  • Awesome video again Les!

Very well presented, easy to follow and covering both paints is just perfect and very much appreciated. I'm probably going to try this as soon as I have a chance.

Keep it up and take care!

  • I know the quick and dirty painting style, but quick and awesome is new to me. Very nice effect with the oilpaint, have to get some of these.

Is the oilpaint thicker than the acrylic or is there any other difference between them when its dry?

  • great tutorial. i need to grap some of that water based oils.
