  • well to tell you the truth, it looks as if he for got to install the rod bearing when rebuilding the engine, cause thats got alot of lag.

  • You drove 5 hours to get an engine for a festiva, wow

  • Not exactly; if I wanted a stock Festiva engine (not that the stock one was showing any sign of wear or anything) I could have easily found one in my local junk yard. I drove 5 hours because at that time I had a hard time finding a BP ( 1.8 DOHC from the Escort GT and Protege GT/LX) and this one was supposed to have been rebuilt, so I made the move.

  • what exactly causes rod knock?

  • Most frequently oil starvation or improper rebuild tolerances...

  • what do you mean by improper build tolerances? what exactly causes the sound? is it the connecting rod hitting the crank shaft?

  • Yes, it's the rod hitting the crankshaft journal. And I said improper REBUILD tolerances...The person rebuilding the engine could have put the wrong thickness for the con-rod to crank bearings, which accellerate wear quickly.

  • oh ic

  • @Trueno1600

after you hear very mild and light rodknock, proper oil change with heavier oil helps engine run longer?

  • Just a little play. No worries.

  • man, i'd still be very pissed off.

  • if he done that to me i would go back to the scrappers a put the engine through his windscreen and kick the shit out of him..

  • I paid 300$CAN for it and the machine shops around here are pretty expensive, so I bought a junkyard engine which came with a waranty for 350$, and sold the salvageable parts from the the crapped-out BP, so at the end of the day, my loss wasn't that big.

  • drop crankshaft take to machine shop and have them reground it and if u want balance it and put new main and rod bearings in and ur rockin.

How much did ass whole get from you? i hope not more than $180

  • ive seen bad rod wobble, but this tops my experience

  • Simple enough fix as long as the crankshaft isn't scored.

It could have been rebuilt... by someone who doesn't know what the hell they're doing.

  • drive back to the guy you bought it from and fuck him up. that s just dirty he sold it to you. Fucking payback is the name. Good luck.

  • I would but I don't really feel like driving the 5 hours it takes to get to his place loll!!!

  • Its fucking bullshit. I just got ripped off in the exact same way. Guy said it was low mileage, and that it ran great. It was from a speed shop too, which does swaps all day long, i found it kind of odd he never offered to do the swap for us. Fuck Epic Autosports in Surrey. They will screw you over, and leave you out to dry. my engine had really bad rod knock. gonna try to slip some bearings in soon.

  • idk how people can rip other people off like that.. id feel so bad

  • ouch...!

  • so ONE rod has a bit of a SHIMMY....

whoop de doo, throw sum JB weld on it and call it a day

  • that is not a BIT of a SHIMMY. im surprised that thing hasnt come apart

  • WHOA!! was there even a bearing installed?

  • Yep... knocking is a bitch. My MK3 Jetta has this.

  • well, its not impossible to fix, just new bearings
