great video man, very well explained. the mystery of dualism is one that plagued me in philosophy class. Searle is very insightful on the topic, Daniel Dennett is also worth listening to. However, i realized that the mystery of dualism can never be understood by a human simply because the only tool we have to solve this mind - body problem is our mind, this forces us to have an extremely bias perspective on the matter. the brain itself is something the mind can never fully understand
woooa my fingers can type you can read ur aware im aware you exist somewhere that i dont but we can communicate birds can fly dogs can bark and pussies can queef a lot of things to think about man thanks for the vid
I think this was a very open, honest and insightful video. The problem is that modern philosophy essentially ignores anything before the time of Descartes, and so it misses the Aristotelian/Thomistic approach to mind that sees the human person as an intrinsic unity with both material and immaterial or intentional aspects. That is the middle ground that allows for both neuroscience, and our experience as living subjects. I outline a current version in my 2 subsystem mind video.
Hey kid, check this out, you'll never look at your teacher with sincerity again. touch a hot pan. your mind and body working together? you have a brain dont let them tell you how to use it. but learn the teachers they just dont always show you the light. you want to get lit read the bible. those are some good words though for where you might be headed; compliments to your brain nerves 2 fluidinbrain = consciousness(matter+energy) x2 =awareness. we square?

You are correct in that the Western way of looking at these questions is completely wrong, or better said, the Westerner always asks the wrong questions or approaches these questions completely wrong.
What about the neutral monism then? The idea of that there's something more fundamental to physical stuff. We must remember that the physical world is still a projection in our heads derived from sensory experiences, we can't be sure of that model being the truth. Maybe matter is just an expression of what really is, and that something incorporates mind as well as matter. A common term describing this is that the universe as we percieve it, is a hologram, a shadow of it's true nature.
Hey Jeff, I'll be sure to check out your videos! As for now...That's an interesting point, but to really give a thoughtful response I'm going to go watch your videos. Agree on premise though, it's often how we are thinking about the problem that creates a roadblock to seeing the solution. :)
I definitely agree that we need to grow out of the mind body problem. That Descartes said the easiest thing for a mind to know is itself basically left the door open for qualia to be studied as givens (and so as a science), and I think this was the mistake of Locke and the classical empiricists: they can "discover" what mind is, which gave it a special position that allowed a distinction to be made. If this wasn't the case then we would simply talk about "things", and not that false dichotomy.
Have you ever read Noam Chomsky's take on the mind-matter problem? It's so brilliant I have no idea how to even take it all in. You should take a look at the YouTube video : "Language and the Mind Revisited - The Biolinguistic Turn."
So as stated you picked up the water bottle, this physical action was made up from a need of replenishment . This action was then processed through the mind letting you decide whether you really wanted to, maybe because it seems embarrassing or unprofessional to do this at a time when you are trying to explain something to a viral audience. Like a team the mind and body seem, well to me, like a process in which two things support each other.
I believe you proved a point in your video by simply taking a sip from your water bottle. I see the mind and body as supporting roles for each other. Physically, you picked up the water bottle. I know this may seem awkward but bare with me.
Whatever I start doing I accompany with thinking like 'should I do this at all'. This entropy follows me everywhere.
Same with philosophy, I want to find answers, instead I find different thoughts and no solution. I feel close to you, mate, because I am feeling lost in all these thoughts. It feels like the more I search, the more I get confused. Maybe we should leave it aside or is it too late to come back to ordinary physical world?
I've often found myself in this same type of situation ilike3or4. Somebody once told me that insanity is knowledge itself. However, one must also accept our nature for knowledge, this nature appears to be intrinsic; a type of knowledge born within us before we are even conscious of the world around us and our inner mind.
I should add that philosophy is controversial by its nature. And this is the kind of thing you have to be careful with, because it can be very power and mindblowing.
well, what do you think of uniting all your thoughts to the basics. Cells are the greatest forms of life. they know warfare, defence. and basically the rules of life. we are formed with cells. and if you analize any form of cells you find that they are all stuggling for life. and behold, isn't that what we are all trying to achieve???
when anybody tries to seperate body and mind it is becomes a falible arguement. If science proves me right then isn't matter the foundation of living and if living congregates thought then isn't it plausable to say the matter greatly influences thought because with out matter how could the brain make thoughts with out the cell?????
There are other stimulants that reference the mind as body impactful entity and sensation as stimulated from the observation that is mind.
the problem isnt that seeing is problematic nor that the body has insignificance, but that propositional order predicts that ways in which we are to see or feel or such...
i'm also doing this topic now. i think that western philosophy is unfulfillable, conciousness could never be put into terms of the physical world, or even neatly grouped with it if you beleive the bhudist philosophy of the sixth sense, that the sound of thought can be heard, therefore you cannot be your thoughts, but the thing that witnesses, and alot of people assume because we are in control (we can do things in the physical realm) that we are our thoughts. this is not the case, we are a witn-
essing consciousness, almost like an unconscious consciousness (in terms of the way we think now) the consciousness that we are is unbiased, a thinking conscious is, so everything we articulate pretty much can only be our own take on a truth, we must cast aspersions and categorize things just to understand the world, we cannot conceptualize it as a whole because, as a whole it is without category or concept, even the concept of "a whole" is a generalisation
From what I have gathered, everything physical runs through systems and patterns.A persons physical components can make up a mind. This mind, although only capable of comprehending things rationally through systems and is made up of a physical source, transcends the limits of anything physical. This mental realm is an overwhelming and intangible space that allows things that cant be done physically. That leads me to believe it to be a force that coexists with the physical universe.

If you get a chance, please check out my series of videos, "Solving the Mystery of Dualism".
Basically, I claim that what's prevented us from solving the Hard Problem of Consciousness (as well as Dualism) is our evolved epistemology.
Once we acknowledge how our evolved minds prefer to (incorrectly) think about this matter, it opens up a path to a solution.
Thanks

There's a great 'story' concerning reductionism / holism in "The mind's I" by Dennet and Hofstadter - If you haven't read it already.

Why is it that we sometimes are fascinated by that which we cannot reach when
we sit in the midst of what we seek? These things are beyond mere words.
It is like sitting and plotting in a prison without walls. Perfection is vastly more
beautiful than it is attainable. It is alot less
provocative and stimulating than being thrilled by the mystery of it's anticipation.
When we no longer need our hands to grasp, we will no longer need to think.
