@yayayoya most would say hard bop. but mingus fashioned his own style which included more collective improvisation (from the new orleans style) combined with edginess of 50s R&B and blues. in the end though, just calling it jazz is good enough, no one will ever tell you you're wrong.

I don't really get what people are saying about the low notes of the baritone saxophone being "smooth." To me they have a very raw and powerful sound. They contain a strong and expressive "punch" but definitely not smooth to my ears. We all hear music differently I guess.

But that's a very elementary skill that a bari sax player learns, so even that doesn't account for much. I agree with you more or less, just throwing you some insight on the matter.
