Nice one! One more interessting point in Leo Apothekers agruments: We are leaving the Tabletmarket, because it would be too expensive to compete against a well known market leader.
Know they are entering a market with a high investment (10bilion for autonomy) and 2! well known competitors, Oracle and IBM...
But even if this thoughts might be valid for the company, the distribution of the news was so bad that no scale would masure it.
@hfGermany Thanks for the added insight. I agree completely. Saying you want to get out of the PC business without any information on how or when you will accomplish that undermines everyone's confidence. It's also very rude.
@mickeleh Bah, I just re-read my post ... "Now" instead of "Know", "thought" instead of "thoughts" the only excuse for those really bad typos is: I was in a hurry to go to lunch ;)
Another awesome explanation, Mickeleh! I hate what razor blade companies do with that tactic and you couldn't have put it more accurately, too - give the razor away and sell you the blades for a ridiculously high price! >=( Grrr!
Ok that scottrade ad is much less distracting. Now I can focus on what you're saying.
I wonder who is going to try and take over the PC market now that HP is out of it? Maybe now a bunch of people are going to drop out until there are only a few left, and then the market for them will be good again (hopefully not at the expense of the PC users, I hope).
@lightanddarklove Bear in mind that the division of HP that makes PCs (the Personal Systems Group or PSG) isn't disappearing. HP is putting them up for adoption. They haven't announced a buyer. Probably that means they haven't found a buyer (yet). They might spin out the division as a separate company.
@mickeleh very possible. I wonder if a current PC company will gobble them up, or if a newcomer to the PC world will take them on. Maybe Microsoft will start going into the hardware business again (I'm assuming at one point they did).
@lightanddarklove Microsoft IS in the hardware business. Very successfully. They make XBox. (also a variety accessories for PCs (keyboards, mice, etc.). Amazon lists over 400 different Microsoft accessories. Mind-boggling. But I doubt that they will make PCs. That would put them into direct competition with their primary customers for Windows: other PC manufacturers.
As for who might buy HPs PC business... stay tuned.
@mickeleh I didn't think about that (the putting themselves into competition with their customers). Though they could stop selling XP to other PC making companies and set up a monopoly of sorts, not that it would be good for consumers, but it might be good for them.
I knew Microsoft made XP but I didn't know how many PC accessories they made. Though I didn't see any non x-box harddrives. They could sell hard-drives pre-loaded with Windows to do-it-yourself pc building consumers.
im not very samrt about this type of stuff and and can barely understand half the terms you are saying. but im sure that what you are saying is very intelligent and you know what you are talking about.
I'm sorry Mickeleh, I was too distracted by the creepy glenn beck ad telling me to buy gold. Why is that advertising on your video? I know you have no control over it, but what relivence could that possibly have? I don't get it.
nice summary of what's gone on in HP over the past year... you should go more in-depth over the roller coaster ride that webOS has gone through in the past three years, I find it to be a very interesting story and tell it to anyone who's willing to listen.
as a PC tech in Las Vegas, HP had the only line of laptops I couldn't fix. The 6000 and 9000 series that were built for a few years starting in 2006 had overheating issues and they'd stop working (almost all of them) a couple months after their warranties ran out. All replacement boards would never last more than 6 months, tops. I eventually had to just start turning the customers away.
as a PC tech in Las Vegas, HP had the only line of laptops I couldn't fix. The 6000 and 9000 series that were built for a few years starting in 2006 had overheating issues and they'd stop working (almost all of them) a couple months after their warranties ran out. All replacement boards would never last more than 6 months, tops. I eventually had to just start turning the customers away.
My old HP laptop ran so noisily and hot, I hated it. Then it stopped working completely just after a year. Terrible it was and I would never buy an HP PC again antway.
Great video! When HP dropped the price of their tablet to $99 they can't keep them on the shelves. The funny part is the power of the power of the tablet is in the apps.
I got an HP Laptop, after I removed the cover from the bottom where it used to stow heat it worked brilliantly, even capable of playing high end games.
It's a shame they want to get out of that business.
The move might make sense on paper, but I just get the feeling that being number one in a below par market is better than being below par in a top market.
As an aside, it seems the world is going mad. Nowadays, everyone is scrambling for the same market slots. Rather than a war on a hundred different battlefields, we're getting a hundred wars on a single battlefield! It's madness!
The TouchPad was only available for 4 days in Australia before the announcement. Then they dropped the price to $99 like in the U.S. One retailer sold 6,000 in an hour - thanks to Twitter.
Honestly, except for "The Computer is personal again" I did not know of any of those other ad campaigns-- they looked pretty cool!
Why did people buy the TouchPad, despite the price, if it was such an uninspiring product? People seem very attracted to apps, good battery life, and a strong OS. The TouchPad didn't seem to have any of those. That, with the poor reviews, it seems puzzling that it sold so well.
@IJethrobot I added links to the spots in the doobily doo. I can think of lots of reasons to buy. It's a pretty good tablet for $99 vs. $499 for an iPad. It's a bit of history. You can turn a quick profit. Touchpads are already going for more than $200 on eBay. The WebOS has some excellent features.
@ZoeDahmen Not sure it's a debacle. The product is excellent and very successful reaching a broader market than Final Cut Pro 7. While FCP X failed to meet the requirements of many professional editors, they're still able to use FCP 7 — and many still do. I think Apple could have avoided the controversy if they had named the new product iMovie Pro.
It would have been much smarter to have iMovie Pro and continue with the Final Cut line separately. Final Cut X isn't meeting the requirements of professional editors and I wouldn't be surprised if many professional editors switched to Avid or Premiere. The real debacle comes in the fact that apple is threatening to nullify all of the certifications in Final Cut in order to force editors to certify in X, which no professional studio will accept.
@mickeleh It seems to me that apple has completely forsaken the prosumer market in favor of the consumer one. Which seems like a huge mistake because they had a pretty solid niche in the professional market. But that's just how I see it.
Sorry I had to make two replies, I try to avoid filling out the character limit but I just couldn't make it this time.
@ZoeDahmen In my view, they're still serving prosumers well. It's the professionals that feel abandoned. As for the future, I'm not up to predicting whether there will be a mass defection to Avid or Premiere. If a post house has built up its work flow in FCP 7, there's no urgent need to move away, is there? Do Avid and Premiere offer essential functionality that's missing from FCP 7?
Avid and Premiere offer the same basic functionality as FCP 7, there are slight differences but they all pretty much provide the same thing. The key lies farther in the future when Avid and Premiere will continue to evolve and advance their technologies while FCP 7 remains stagnant. I know that schools have already started making the switch from teaching FC to Avid so it seems like the professional world already perceives that FC is out of the picture.
@ZoeDahmen That would be the case if FCP X also remains stagnant. We'll see what the actual comparisons look like when the time comes. Since I'm not privy to the product plans of Apple, Avid, or Adobe, I'm not in a position to predict. And I'm not going to fret about it.
@ZoeDahmen Fascinating to look at the reviews in the Mac App Store. There are over 700 five-star ratings and over 700 one-star ratings. The product clearly has a split personality.
@mickeleh That's probably because those people are looking for very different things. For those of us who've "grown up" using final cut, as I have, imovie just doesn't do it for us. To me, imovie is frustrating but I'm sure to people who have always used imovie Final Cut X seems really great, especially if they're planning on transitioning from amateur work to professional work. But most of the people I've talked to in the professional world hate FC X.
Am I in the minority for having had a terrible experience with an HP PC? People keep saying they're so great and dependable, but I had an HP Pavilion laptop, and thing after thing after thing broke on it and caused me all kinds of headaches.
This amuses me. First, HP kicks Dell in the head one Dell's core business, then Dell TRIES to change to another core business (which they can't do properly, Dell wasn't even able to keep their own customer database stable for months after moving it to Dell servers from Tandem hardware) and HP prepares to kick them all over again. (Yes, I'm bitter. I worked for Dell for about a year and a half. Of COURSE I'm bitter. HP's supposed to be bad too, but at least they aren't incompetent too.)
no more Hp PCs.... this is criminal... HP makes the best blind buyer Computer on the market.... I mean they only reason I didn't buy an HP when I bought my latest computer is because Acer had the better hardware machine for my dollar and that was it.... Hell Hp just builds a good lasting computer and the last one we bought is still in use. That's probably what killed them Too high a quality in there products.... Though there printers are crap. They can't make a good printer.
I never really liked HP anyway; their products seemed to be just a bit too much (not expensive but nowhere near the cheapest) but then without the backing that would be expected from paying more (like the software and the longevity of the products). Although I have to hand it to them, they did have the easiest to aquire drivers so there's that.
I liked my pre plus until it stopped working right and I waited as long as I could for the pre 3. But I had to get a Droid incredible 2 because it was getting to be too much.
@JSMworld Not necessarily. The computer division isn't going away. It's just that HP doesn't want them. So they will either wind up bought by another company—or spun out as a New Company.
@mickeleh And, quite likely, for all the reasons IBM did it with their equivalent section: It doesn't make much money, and it's probably more or less at war with the rest of the company.
The title of this video = my EXACT reaction to this news. I have had HPs my entire life; they've always worked wonderfully for me. The idea that when my current desktop computer kicks the bucket, I'll have to replace it with a different brand, is just... upsetting :-(
@backformore06 But when IBM sold its PC business to Lenovo, both of them thrived. Took a while for people to get used to the Lenovo brand, but they're doing fine..
Not that I know that much about these kinds of things, but maybe something you could work on is keeping your white balance on your camera consistent. :)
@GONEmypurpleflapjack The names in the pictures are credits for the photographers. I'm using the photos under creative commons license. Probably would have been less confusing to put the credits in the doobily doo.
I work at staples, the day they announced this, people raided the store and bought all the Touchpads, we still have people coming in asking for them and we always have to tell them no. It was crazy and people are refusing to buy hp stuff now even though it doesn't matter at this point ahaha.

@JSMworld Not necessarily. The computer division isn't going away. It's just that HP doesn't want them. So they will either wind up bought by another company—or spun out as a New Company.
mickeleh 6 months ago
@mickeleh And, quite likely, for all the reasons IBM did it with their equivalent section: It doesn't make much money, and it's probably more or less at war with the rest of the company.

The title of this video = my EXACT reaction to this news. I have had HPs my entire life; they've always worked wonderfully for me. The idea that when my current desktop computer kicks the bucket, I'll have to replace it with a different brand, is just... upsetting :-(
backformore06 6 months ago 5
@backformore06 But when IBM sold its PC business to Lenovo, both of them thrived. Took a while for people to get used to the Lenovo brand, but they're doing fine..

@mickeleh My laptop is a Lenovo ^_^
Also I had the same reaction as your title when I read about what HP did.

Very interesting what HP is doing. Also very risky, their new strategy may or may not work. I know I wouldn't want stock in them right now.

Not that I know that much about these kinds of things, but maybe something you could work on is keeping your white balance on your camera consistent. :)

@mickeleh At about 2:46 Is the name on the picture of who took the photo, or is that pciture of a differnt person than leo apathingy entirely.
GONEmypurpleflapjack 6 months ago
@GONEmypurpleflapjack The names in the pictures are credits for the photographers. I'm using the photos under creative commons license. Probably would have been less confusing to put the credits in the doobily doo.

@mickeleh Thanks for the clarification.

I work at staples, the day they announced this, people raided the store and bought all the Touchpads, we still have people coming in asking for them and we always have to tell them no. It was crazy and people are refusing to buy hp stuff now even though it doesn't matter at this point ahaha.
