  • I love this song

  • great song, cave byblic, poetic, mystic... actually my favourite songwriter, genius!!

Sad? maybe, maybe pure and dark, is no easy the two.

  • ♥

  • this is so sad, because it is so fn true...

  • ...needs a moustache

  • As i sat sadly by her side C:

  • By far my favorite person in the world. I love Nick Cave <3

  • fantastic, his live concerts are this good :D

  • great!

  • perfect

  • i love you

  • Beatiful thing!!!!;)))

  • He's talented guy..

    Very powerfull and sentimental..

    .....Love it

  • This song was the reason I bought my first Nick Cave cd. I heard this song and thought that it was great and one of the most powerful songs I had ever heard and had to have the cd. I have of course been a big fan ever since

  • bu adamın sesine, yorumuna, şarkıalrına bayılıyorum

  • very cool..

  • help, he is so divine. thank you, dear creator, for having formed men like him, music like this. amen.

  • this sounds so shallow, i know, but i was just thinking about what woman would like him for him to write these songs for. He is talented, yes, but ugly. then i see comments like this and realize there are hopless romantics who aren't shallow like me. i use to crush on the singer from modest mouse, thought to myself this poet is my new radio boyfriend, then i saw his pic and i broke up with him. Nick cave is the coolest though.

  • i´m glad that you´ve been cured :-)

  • This song is just so moving. Thank you Nick, for putting to music what I could not put into words....

    -SoPhoe

  • no words for the feeling this song gives me...

    es ist so schön!

muss jedesmal heulen wenn ichs höre ♥

  • nicht nur du

  • no words can do this song justice, it is that awesome

  • this song is full of sentiment!!! Nick Cave is also a great blueserman, but this songs only with piano are really the best that I ever heard!!! great Nick!

  • who is this Nick Cave and why havent I heard of him before? hes very talented...

  • unfortunately the mainstream music stations have blocked out any real talent.. shame on them! Thank god for the internet and places like youtube to help us spread the seeds of truly talented musicians!

  • i agree absolutely, ive found so many great musicians on here i never knew existed before. thanks to my irish friend for pointing me in Nick's direction :)

  • Really powerful display of emotion..love it!

  • piękne!! love it ! j'adore !

  • This is the first time i have seen this and am in love with the clip. Such emotion...I think the voice is in the higher pitch to show lament. When u are upset, you do not reach into the lower timbre of your voice to show it, it's quite high.

  • ti amo ti amo ti amo ti amo ti amo ti amo

  • some one has lyrics

  • Great song and album, although I wish the singing was a bit less strained.

  • Strained in your ass. Nick is Brilliant, his voice in all its colors.

  • On this song the vocals do not sound very good as well as many other NMSWP songs. Thats just how it is. Boatman's Call vocals are much better... more relaxed.

  • I can see what you mean. I think he sounds better when his voice is deeper and darker. Still, brilliant song and fab video.

  • I also agree. I think he reached a balanced medium on Abbatoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus between his old style and "new" style of singing. Dig Lazarus Dig is just mental. Not bad. Just mental.

  • "Still, brilliant song and fab video. "

    Indeed it is.

  • I also love this album, its what got me well and truly hooked on Nick Cave. I spent a good 2 years listening to this album every night as i fell asleep, no joke. I still turn to it now, all these years later. I would like No More Shall We Part to be my wedding dance, if anyone is daft enough to wed me!

  • xBR00T4Lx

  • ve tanrı nick cave'i yarattı..

  • I was listening to this, paused it for a moment to listen to the news and caught the story on the black friday tragedy (man was trampled to death at walmart). Right afterward hit play to hear the second verse "see him gesture to his nieghbor.. and see him trampled beneath thier feet." What were the odds? I broke down and cried for quite some time. So sad.

  • Uhh... I totally understand you... rough moment = (

  • this music video is absolutely beautiful and I think it really captures the song... the movement, the feeling... it's so lovely

  • The best songwriter, the coolest cat...

  • Still one of my favorite songs of all time. Then again, all the songs of that album (and of course any song by Nick Cave in general) are brilliant.

  • Nick Cave rocks!!!. I wish I could write songs as good as him.

  • Does anyone here knows what song Nick Cave sing where there's a girl having a huge orgams?

    Thanks.

  • Are you talking about "I Love You, Nor Do I"?

It's Cave and Anita Lane. You should find the video somewhere on youtube.

  • God has given you but one heart

You are not a home for the hearts of your brothers

And God does not care for your benevolence

Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others

Nor does he care for you to sit

At windows in judgement of the world he created

While sorrows pile up around you

    Ugly, useless and over-inflated

  • Nick Cave is really a master of sad melodic storytelling.

  • this song, god is in the house, oh my lord, love letter, a album where you can listen to all the tracks without skipping.

  • great song!

  • in what record is this song?

  • It's from the 2001 album "No more shall we part". Buy it!!! :o)

  • I second that endorsement! No more shall we part contains some of Cave's best songwriting, it's gorgeously despondent.

  • genious.

  • 10 out of 10. DEADLY.

  • Well, I really LOVE the song and the piano, I could listen to it all day long, but Nick doesnt have a perfect voice. Even though, the piano is really fantastic.

  • regarding his voice, I do agree, it is far from being perfect but this is what makes it so special and moving

  • magnificent, superb, I can listen to it ever and ever and ever.

    He is definitely a genius

  • when he dies people will say he was the greatest songwriter of his generation, what a fucking genius

  • pity they'll only say that when he dies

  • I am in love with this song. Never tire of listening to it. The lyrics are as beautiful as they are heartbreaking.

Nick Cave has an incredible talent for capturing a moment, and painting it clear as day in our minds.

His work always impresses me. Its never just a song or a verse, it always poetry. Relentless, fearless and utterly spellbinding.

  • one night i woke up and i got to see this video just lucky

  • Oh, the piano.

    Oh, the voice.

    Oh, the lyrics.

    Simply perfect.

  • great great song!!!!!!

  • excellent

  • The most beautiful song on the world. Nick Cave should be Bard....as Blind Guardian sings : ...But the bards song will remain :-)

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs out there. Almost haunting, definatly enchanting...

  • great song,awesome

  • my god he is perfect

  • this song is heavier than any weapon man has created..!!!VOTE NICK CAVE FOR PRESIDENT!!!

  • Wonderful song!

  • this song is amazing really really amazing

  • Enchanting.

  • awesome.

  • he is so strange lookinig

  • Well, he WAS created at the place where Satan and God meet - and probably strikes fear in both of them for totally different reasons.

    lol

  • wonderfoul

  • Aż ciarki przechodzą.

    JEST WIELKI

  • I sometimes cry when i'm listening his music...

  • ti amo Nick

  • Unbelibevably beautiful...Nobody can sing as Nick do....He is perfect...a exceptional talent!!!

  • What can say about this guy? His music and his lyrics got me through some tough times. Abolutley magical. Thanks Mr Cave.

  • Nick Cave's performances take place on so many levels. It's like Alchemy.

  • Μόνο για τον τελευταίο στίχο.

  • Something about the verse about "Sorrows pile up around you, Ugly useless and o-ver inflated" placed together with the Atom Bomb...

    A good choice I think

  • Well the politics around dropping one of those things fits in perfectly too man. Nothing about an atomic bomb is pretty, usefull, and simple. Good call though.

  • Aside from that, I really like that the image just before was that of a blooming flower... I love the juxtipastion (this is the guy you commented on- different account).

  • I sort of disagree.

Every image in this video is beautiful, disregarding all connotations.

After all, "there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so"

In the video all these things are harmless, aesthetic, but the opinions of Cave and the woman are so vastly different that they see an entirely different world when they look out the window.

But always felt in the end Cave wins. Poor girl.

  • Epic.

  • one of the saddest songs ever produced, beautiful!

  • burner!

  • he is magic

  • and I asked a number of my friends about it, and, amazingly, not once I heard same opinion twice. Such is the power of Nick's poetry. And btw, not 3 months ago I watched him live in Croatia; I heard him perform The Mercy Seat and... somehow words fail me now... Such is the power of Nick's poetry

  • There are no words that can express my love towards this song. I've never heard sadness in such perfection. It's just unbelievably beatiful...

  • AMEZINLY DEEP, DEEP, DEEP.....Love Fiore:)

  • He did, and he wrote a novel as well, though i haven't read it yet.

  • proposition, awesome film! Nicky boy not only wrote the music score he also wrote the screenplay and has a small role near the end of the film in the bar. Is there no end to this man's talent?

  • No dear, there is NO end to Nick's exceptional talent. We're just going to have to deal with that, eh?? The Proposition was indeed an epic film!! I hope he makes many more!! He's coming to Seattle soon, and I can't get tickets. How shall we wrap our heads around THAT?? Bummmmmer!!

  • He is featured in a beautiful film called 'Wings of Desire'...

  • Well, yes of course "Wings of Desire" a German film... simply gorgeous!! Wim Winders, eh??

  • Yes, thats how I first heard of Nick Cave

;-), brilliant musician in a brilliant film!

  • The real version of city of angels isn't it ? before it was called that.

  • Anybody see The Proposition? Great Australian western written by Cave, he does the soundtrack as well.

  • Um chyeah, it's amazing.

  • could listen to this all day "not a home for the hearts of your brothers" that's such a cold statement.

  • i think cave's music is a cure for depression...u know when having no feelings at all(cause that's depression)..just listen to his music

  • I love you!!!!!

  • the irony of his lover trying to stop him sitting sadly by her side, focusing on the worlds lacking, and how she is drowning in his misery, god reminds me of my relationship, what a clever song and an anthem for burnt out support workers

  • An excellent song and an excellent video, nick cave's always great to listen to, a bit depressing but it's well worth it.

Adventurestud, yes, all australians look like Hugo Weaving - we call him the father of the nation, Australia came into existence in november 1991 when Hugo made his first clone. Look how far we've come!

  • Thanks for that mate! I think Heath Ledger had some of it - just a little. God rest his soul.

  • such a beautiful piece of art

  • Fucking amazing best song av ever heared

  • the first ten seconds are just brilliant

  • love it, im sat here 2 in the mornin, listenin to nick cave, depressin but so good...

  • It's magnificent - just a sign of the great artist, and great man - mature and gifted.

  • well me stopped by after "into my arms" another masterpiece. about contents being asked around here? don´t care for those comments, it´s what makes you feel something you thought you´ve lost. hello world, hope you´re listening.

  • He looks a lot like Hugo Weaving. Is tha tan Australian thing?

  • beautiful

  • One of his best pieces if not the one.

  • I would like to hear George Michael sing this...

and have Cave take a shot at Michaels' Older.

  • There are of course many possible interpretations of the lyrics. Nick Cave draws a setting, but the exact meaning of the picture is to be created by the listeners. You can't just passively listen to his songs like most popsongs, but you have to do an effort and to be creative and open minded. And that's the beauty of it, that listeners can discuss and share their opinion about the songs and its meaning.

  • I completely agree, I posted a number of comments on these lyrics and, truth to be told, I did it largely because I wanted to provoke anybody to stop and think about "Nick's poetry with musical background" (comment I stumbled across years ago about his older works)and because I still strongly feel that "I could not wipe the smile from my face" line brings such a rush of emotion from anybody who really listened to the lyrics and was drown into this beautiful, intimate dialog of two souls;

  • . She, however, knows better, that it is namely of the essence of humans to be bad and that there is no - at least no caring - God. But being forced to teach him her wisdom, she relieves which is why she cries. His smile is "self-disgusting" smile.

  • I cant agree with comments on the lyrics stating that the point of the song is to show her, the lady, having her dream (the world is beautiful) shutterd. On the contrary - he is in fact the one who is shutterd by him believing in the intrinsic justice of the world (which would have to presupose a living just god) which is precisly why he feels indignation at many ignoble deeds of humanity.

  • By the way, people who like this song from Nick Cave, should also watch the video of his song "Mercy Seat". One of his oldest songs, but still one of his best songs. Nick Cave, sure one of the most interesting and genuine artists for the moment.

  • It's one of those timeless songs, that you constantly can listen to, and still be impressed by the intensity of the song. And when you haven't listened to it for a while, and you rediscover the song, you are immediatly addicted again. The lyrics are amazing, you are realy drawn into the story. And Nick Cave has the perfect voice for such songs. A very powerful and intense song, but unfortunately very underestimated.

  • addicting song :X

  • Amezing! Beautiful! <33

it's absolutely my favourite! it reminds me of my dad.

  • nick cave is a lyrical genius able to direct his intentions through a feeble yet stunningly sensitive voice

  • so lyric!!

  • Everybody gets one.

  • beautiful this song *_*

  • the nick cave album is no more shall we part,a must have album my fave esp god is in the house and oh my lord

  • this song is so special to me..

  • I dont know how one man can be so amazing, but he certainly does it with ease.

  • wonderful comment...

  • I don't usually listen to Nick Cave, but this is honest to god one of the greatest songs I've ever heard!

  • Beautiful...beautiful!!

  • I`m deeply affected by the despared and self-disgusted look in his eyes when singing "I could not wipe a smile from my face...". Simply brilliant.

  • this whole album is amazing it gives me the chills to listen to the whole album but the piano on this song sends chills up my back simply amazing nick cave is the man the mercy seat is amazing too

  • he sings love in a unique way. noone ever... god...

  • he is a genius, the sadness gets another dimension...

  • falling lovely and amaazing!! <3

  • I just discover this artist, the song, the voice and the lyrics are awesome, also the music, that piano is great!! and I don't know why....but I can watch 00:19-00:23s over and over and over again!!! I love the way he moves...!!!!!

  • i think shes just having a bad fever

  • "God has given you just one heart, you are not a home for the hearts of your brothers"

Nick Cave is amazing. Can't wait to buy the new album.

  • although i don´t believe in god, that song makes me think about a "god".

"Nor does he care for you to sit

At windows in judgement of the world he created

While sorrows pile up around you

    Ugly, useless and over-inflated"

those lines impressed me a lot..

    this song is phenomenal

  • I wonder whether it's supposed to be a critique on this in my opinion egoistic position (...she turned her head away // Great tears leaping from her eyes // I could not wipe the smile from my face // As I sat sadly by her side...) or not.

  • I wonder whether it's supposed to be a critique on this in my opinion egoistic position (...she turned her head away // Great tears leaping from her eyes // I could not wipe the smile from my face // As I sat sadly by her side...) or not.

  • Bros: it is just domestic catalogue verse. Think of Genesis; it parodies that sense of location; yet, it articulates our hunger for it.

  • Look at this lyrics from "wonderful life"We can build our dungeons in the air And sit and cry the blues We can stomp across this world With nails hammered through our shoes We can join that troubled chorus Who criticise and accuse It don't matter much We got nothing much to lose But this wonderful life If you can find it And when you find it And when you find it It's a wonderful life that you bring It's a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful thing. Thats in some way what she says.
  • I dont think, that she has any illusion about the world. it´s not contradictory to see the world as it is, with all it´s faults and nevertheless to say: It´s good. If he want´s to destroy any kind of dream, he would not smile but smirk.

  • I think - she has very aesthetic attitude to life -- "all is falling lovely and amazing" she plotted comfortable theory that "god does not care for..." He destroyed this ideal picture she made in her mind in defence of ugliness of this world. She cries that lost calmness. It makes him glad that there is chance she would be able to awake from dreams.

  • Thanks to all of you that comment on NICKS CAVE lyrics, they are beautiful pero pueden tener mil fondos y son algo sificil de desifrar, "I LOVE HIS LYRICS BIG TIME" Love Fiore:)

  • All are there forever falling

    Falling lovely and amazing...

  • what do you think, why he cannot "wipe the smile from his face"?

  • For me (n.b.) the smile is about her taking steps towards the belief that there is no intervening God; as she says that God does not care about his our others benevolence, or judgement of the world.

That is closer to his (Cave's as well as the storyteller's) point of view, compared with the view of most churches (her being church personified).

  • so her tears comes from shock of recognition?

Her finally seeing Cave point of view?

  • Yes, or at least tears of denial; conflict in rhetoric and belief - with the kitten (faith) not longer being with her.

  • Or maybe she shockes herself, as the answer that she gives Cave is more suitable for her; she first judges God's creation, calling them beautiful, "out there forever falling, lovely and amazing", then judges Cave for pointing out how we are blind and self-absorbed, telling him that God doesn't care about Caves judgment on the World, when in fact she does the same; they are behind the glass, unaffacted by the world; looking at the beauty of Creation while sorrows pile up around them?

  • It could very well be so I say. ;)

Anyhow, she got no more right to judge than he got, it doesn't matter if he comments on the world and she comments on him - it is both comments of the same magnitude.

  • you hit the mark - that is why he cannot wipe the smile from his face.

Thank you for your opinion, it was really nice to comment on Cave lyrics with someone who likes his music, and takes time to think about his lyrics. Thank you for sharing your time talking to me. God bless

  • you hit the mark - that is why he cannot wipe the smile from his face.

  • She replies: Its not of your concern. Dont judge the world, it wont relieve your pain and you cant change it. There is no need for your sorrows, they are ugly, useless. There are sorrows enough, already overinflated. And it is him with the moment of recognition. He was the sad one. She is not judging him when she says: oh when will you ever learn? Her tears are for him, the man faced to her. Not someone somewhere whose fate she cant change. I think he finally sees that. Thats what i think.

  • But he asks: Can that really be good can that be fair? Witness the man reaching up from the gutter see the other one stumbling on who can not see! He is furiously desperate, his hands are even trembling

  • think it´s the question of theodicy. The situation is like a sad man waiting for an answer from a fortuneteller. The kitten, the glas, the point of view, from where you can see everything. They watch the world as it fell past. She does not judge by simply enjoying the creation. Thats why she only list the things she sees. Lovely and amazing.

  • maybe you're right...

it seems to me a point of some subtle irony in his smile; "great tears leaping from her eyes, I cound not wipe the smile from my face"; his beeing unable to stop smiling in face of her tears seems like he has some kind of greater truth about the way she looks at the world.

Really it seems to me like he smiles AT her.

That's why I posted this question here; seems to me that you and the LLiivveeeevviiLL are both right in some way, but I feel that something is still missing...

  • And that is it, you captured an essence of it; that's why he smiles; at her broken illusion of the world around her and at himself, beeing unable not to shatter her illusion, her glass, defence against the world
