I have a 90 idi turbo my father has a 95 psd my buddy has a cummins the dodge and the psd sound better than my idi but mine pulls stronger I know it doesn't make sense but I have 4:10 gears they both have 4:56 gears we all pull the same trailers with the same loaders and I can pull away from them but they do sound good!!!
Both r nice trucks, I've owned both a 01 cummins and now own a 99 psd and by far the powerstroke sounds better and as far as performance goes I'd say it's a tie
By the way, my company has 5 ford diesels and 1 dodge diesel and everyone fights to use the Dodge diesel because it starts in the cold morning and pulls much better then the powerstrokers. Like they say 6 in a row make em go ! :)
THE CUMMINS ALWAYS SOUNDS GOOD. THE 7.3 SOUNDS GOOD ALSO.... I HAVE A 7.3 POWER STROKE AND LOVE THE TURBO SOUND WHEN I SHIFT GEARS. BUT ALL IN ALL I WOULD SAY ITS A TIE. AS LONG ITS NOT A JAPP DURAMAX;)
@kubotaboy123 on diesel you want hot air in the intake genius. cold air intakes are pointless in any car. it just makes the air/fuel mixture harder to ignite.
@faded2blak That is not true. Why would they put charge air coolers on almost all forced induction vehicles if you want hot air? According to physics, PV=nRT, a defined amount of gas (moles) at a defined temperature and pressure has a defined volume. At a lesser temperature, the volume is less as well (V is directly proportional to T). This means you can pack more air molecules into the combustion chamber, and ergo more fuel as well. This gives you more power.
@faded2blak Also, especially on a diesel, you do not want hot air in your intake as this raises the engines EGT's as well, limiting total power production and hindering engine reliability and longevity. The only time you would want warm air is during a cold start situation, hence the grid heaters used on some engines.
@nate0031 the amount of fuel put into the cylinders has nothing to do with the IAT the throttle on diesels are hooked directly to a fuel pump. im not saying that you want HOT air but cold air doesnt really help anything. the hotter the incoming air the better the combustion will be. no you do not want combustion so hot the engine cannot cool itself and break down but generally speaking for a better burn you want warmer air. im just saying that cold air isnt all its cracked up to be.
@faded2blak I agree that cold air intakes aren't all they're cracked up to be. While the amount of fuel injected on many older diesels is not dependent on the amount of air inhaled, the power and efficiency of the engine is. A diesel fuel system can continue to inject fuel, but if there is not adequate oxygen present for full combustion of all that fuel, all you get is black smoke (wasted fuel, no more power). Once the engine is running, cooler air is better (within reason).
@faded2blak One of the primary benefits of cooler intake air is the direct relationship to EGT's. Let's say you have 250°F air exiting the turbocharger, you then cool it to 150°F with a CAC. You've then lowered your EGT's by nearly the same amount. Instead of 1100°F you're now down to 1000°F, allowing you to give the engine more fuel and not risk melting your pistons while climbing a grade.
@USCisgay Whats the mileage on it, you need to replace injectors and injection pump every 100-150,000 miles. Other than that there great trucks if you take care of them. Is an auto or stick.
Nice 7.3. That's in a lot better shape than my '93 F250, but I like the upgrades they made to the look for my gen (headlights, gauges, etc.). And it really is too bad it's an automatic. But ya can't win 'em all, I guess.
i gotta vote for the 7.3. Still like cummings but that just because its in our semi. either engine will last a long time but if you don't maintain it or if you just beat it to death neither will last long.
The 6.9/7.3 IDI were a very reliable motor and good decent performance without a turbo. The only thing i like about 6.2s is the 24 mpg you can achieve. Nothing more...
I like the ultra loud crackle of the detroit 6.5 turbo better. Still, gotta luv Cummins, and the 7.3. I would dare buy a Dodge, and its to bad, cause I like cummins. But have heard and seen TO many Dodge horror storys. So it would be a Powerstroke 7.3, Detroit 6.5 turbo, or Dmax 6.6!
@15puckett did you turn it up yourself, if so just turn the fuel screw counter clock wise. If not Google "Low Buck Diesel Power" find the 6.9/7.3IDI section and they will tell how to turn it up, the same process is done to turn it down.
Werent the IDIs Detriot Diesels? I just find it funny (if they are) that Ford used Detroit IDIs while Chevy used the 6.5 Detriot turbo engine! And werent Powerstrokes detroits too?
@Motorfordtoyota The term IDI was never associated with Detroit or Ford. IDI just means indirect injected. @Motorfordtoyota the IDI's used in the Ford pickups were actually made by International Harvester or more in other terms Navistar, the Chevy IDI's were made by Detroit diesel but were also available in a similar turbocharged version though, i know these cuz i own a 1985 Ford F250 6.9IDI and my best freind has a 1994 Chevy 3500 6.5 Detroit
@700wildcat Yeah I figured that out right after the comment I posted. Navistar/Ford. Detroit/GM. And the GM wasnt turboed until 92 or so, when it was enlarged to 6.5 litres. And they have been DFI motors since the mid 70's.
thanks man what is the pryometer do ? and that junked truck i believe it is a 94 its not a powerstroke but i would have to get the intake off to right?
@Fravelj it measures your exhaust gas temps, you need on to monitor the temps when you turn it up. If you get it to hot you could melt or crack a piston, score the cylinder walls and just bad stuff.

@Fravelj google "low buck diesel power" its the ford 6.9/7.3 IDI section, and the junked truck, make sure it is an IDI and not a power stroke, if it is an IDI then every thing will work fine, just make sure you get all the little things like the valve covers, glow plug wiring harness, and the CDR valve stuff.
the ford. i love cummins to death. awesome motors. but im a die-hard ford guy, and you just cant beat that diesel grunt combined with awesome V8 sound.
@mirc225 the best I've got was 22hwy, I average 16 city/hwy, no not really a slug but not fast, I hit 110mph in it with my new rev limiter. I really need to make a new video of it.
Wow ! Nice idi Ford it really sounds great it runs like a new engine, how many miles does it have ?
The Cummins I like the Dodge I don't unless you like destroyed dashboards and such.
Off topic a bit but I can not believe that the U.S military used vehicles with the 6.2L and 6.5L Detroit diesels instead of a vehicle with a more powerful and reliable diesel like the 7.3powerstroke or cummins how sick would the Hummer be if it cam with a real engine !
@stickfishy Oh, so close, International/Navistar as they were called at the time made the IDI's and the 7.3/6.0 powerstrokes, the emissions tag on my motor says International Navistar. I don't know about the 6.4 I think it was just Navistar
@dieselgaint Yup i believe you are correct, the only Ford diesel engine made of late that was in house and not by International/Navistar would be the new 6.7.
@HUTCHtopher i agree i have a 1994 f250 idi turbo diesel 5 spd awsome truck but i still got to give cummins a props i love the stright 6 sound love it
I think the 7.3 idi was louder personally. I love the way a diesel sounds no matter what brand, but i'm a Ford guy and love the old idi motors. Ford ftw.
I like the Cummins, especially since it has a turbo, which sounded great when you revved it. I also like how the 7.3 sounds. When International gave the 7.3 electronics and a turbocharger, they called it the T444E, which sounds slightly different than the 7.3 (for the better, in my opinion). Very nice video!
Personally im a ford guy, but cummins and international (not including the 6.0) make really good engines if you take care of them... still like my ford though =)
you can really hear the rev difference with the one that has the turbo. it reaches higher revs faster even with the turbo leg. im personally a sucker for the turbo whine.
your truck sounds like it has more bottom end beef for really starting a heavy hull off a dead stop.
GOD i wish we had our vrew cab 86 7.3 IDI back i love it sound way better than the cummins and way better than the powerstroke to wich is cun=mmins but you know
I love how ford sounds with a straight pipe i own a 01 7.3 with a straight pipe and it sounds awesome but Idk which engine is better the 7.3's were great engines.
the saying for the old 5.9 cummins are, its a 350,000 mile truck raped around a million mile engine. and there is no better sound than the 12v 5.9 cummins. nothing out lasts it. im not knocking the international but cummins all the way.
All you idiots think the Ford is a Powerstroke. It's not, it's a Navistar 6.9L or a 7.3. Older, but made alot better. Nothing wrong with Cummins though, even if they put the engine in a Dodge.
Thank you! Finally someone knows what engine their talking about, very true indeed the Ford has a International Diesel, I can't remember what International Called them, but it is most definitely not a Powerstroke, Thank you for pointing that out.
early international 7.3 IDI motors were 444 cube with a stanadyne rotary injection pump that eat themselves alive with the ULSD fuel, the same pump GM's detroit diesel-built 6.2 and 6.5's used.. powerstrokes are the same basic design as the IDI motors but 446 cube, different heads, pistons, and direct injection with electronic injectors located under the valve covers. all 446's are turbos, only a few IDI 444's got factory turbos, ATS and banks made numerous aftermarket kits for them though.
@roddyyy524 you right with engine but mine is not a t444e that series came out in 94 but only with a manual until 95, mine is a 90 and my engine came out in 1983 as a 6.9 and in 88 they made the 7.3 version of the 6.9, same internals except they had different heads and pistons I believe, the t444e or powerchoke is completely different.
@dieselgaint my dad had a 91 idi and the only problem it had was the belts would snap every 8-10000 miles, the 7.3 powerstroke that he has now has had little problems, the biggest one so far was a thotle control and it has almost 200000 miles on it, so i wouldnt say its a bad motor but i like all three
One thing that's purely a fact that can not be argued is that the Cummins Turbo Diesel motor (esp the 12 Valve) has FAR LESS moving parts than just about any Diesel or Gas motor on the market...less parts means less things can go wrong. less parts in a motor....less parts that can break. That's a Fact.
p.s. I like the comment about Ford guys putting the Cummins Motors in their trucks but you don't see any one putting a Power Stroke in a Dodge haha, Very Nice.
@casualty178 why would anyone put a powerstroke in an ugly dodge. The cummins 5.9 is a nice engine, which is why a person would want to put it in a nice truck. ford = better axles, transmissions, and looks (interior and exterior) than dodge, so putting a cummins in a ford is a good idea. i plan on putting a 12v in mine one day.
i think the cummins sounds better that what i like about cummins but the idi will last way longer my f250 has 373000 original miles an it runs perfect does anybody agree?
powerstroke was when they became computer controlled. pretty sure 94 was a 7.3 idi with a turbo but it was mechanical. im not a ford guy tho so correct me if i am wrong
You have my vote for the IDI, but just FYI for all of you, cummins is not as great as they all make them seem to be. The powerstrokes are just as good as a cummins, they are all motors, they'll all have problems, they are mechanical somthing WILL go wrong at one point. But in our experience The powerstrokes have out done the cummins trucks
oh really how about the 6.4 wiht a spartan chip have u seen how fast they are wiht just the chip ore how about the new 6.7 that the ford is making how much better do u realy think a doge is
i'm not saying dodge is great. in truth i have my own ford diesel and put a 2005 cummins in it and it preforms better than it did with the powerstroke. my cummins crank 395 hp with 960flbs of torque compared to the 380 and 800flbs of torque. btw CHECK YOUR SPELLING
Anyone who loves the International Motors. say that Cummins' Motors are shit. Anyone who loves Cummins say that Internationals are shit. Then you have the people that like both. Metal is Metal, and bolts are bolts.
@kaziwill i know cummins makes different sized engines im not retarded. but they are good reliable engines unlike the fords. also if you are so in love with fords pick up the february 2011 edition of diesel power and see how the new "greatest diesel of them all"ford 6.7L does up against an engine with less power. pretty pathetic how badly it does.
Man all the old diesels sounds good other than the chevy diesels. I've owned both and got more than 700,000 miles out of both so can say witch it better. I got better milage out of the Dodge. There both great diesels. How ever I think that the Dodge sounds better due to the turbo sound. With the loud diesel and the whistle of the turbo it just sounds mean.
5.9 cummins will pull any P.O.S(ford) in circles any day. but personally i like the sound of 03 6.0 stroker they got the loudest turbos but its still a ford so its just as useful as an ashtray on a motorcyle. CTD baby!!!
It's cause Cummins motors are strong enough to break shit. Everyone has their own opinions. Those 6.0 Diesel Engines from ford were pieces of shits : )

@dieselgaint Yup i believe you are correct, the only Ford diesel engine made of late that was in house and not by International/Navistar would be the new 6.7.

ive owned a 2007 f250 6.0 and i really have never had any problems what so ever ...good luck i guess
MrMustang210 1 year ago
I think the 7.3 idi was louder personally. I love the way a diesel sounds no matter what brand, but i'm a Ford guy and love the old idi motors. Ford ftw.
MustangMabry 1 year ago
Put the 12v into the Ford and you will have win.
CockYaLegS 1 year ago
all non turbo diesel sound like shit and cummins no matter what always sound better!!!
bk32591 1 year ago
I like the Cummins, especially since it has a turbo, which sounded great when you revved it. I also like how the 7.3 sounds. When International gave the 7.3 electronics and a turbocharger, they called it the T444E, which sounds slightly different than the 7.3 (for the better, in my opinion). Very nice video!

Personally im a ford guy, but cummins and international (not including the 6.0) make really good engines if you take care of them... still like my ford though =)

whered you get the gauge pod that fits on the pillar?
FORDGTFANATIC 1 year ago
you can really hear the rev difference with the one that has the turbo. it reaches higher revs faster even with the turbo leg. im personally a sucker for the turbo whine.
your truck sounds like it has more bottom end beef for really starting a heavy hull off a dead stop.

the saying for the old 5.9 cummins are, its a 350,000 mile truck raped around a million mile engine. and there is no better sound than the 12v 5.9 cummins. nothing out lasts it. im not knocking the international but cummins all the way.
my92d350 2 years ago 7
@my92d350 More like, a million mile motor wrapped in a 20 mile truck. dodge makes the worst shit Ive seen.
Motorfordtoyota 1 year ago 2
all i got to say is both trucks are nice ... ive owned both the 7.3 idi trucks and a some 12 valve dodges with the ve injection pump.....
alot better then the 6.2 or turbo 6.5 detriots made for the gm's those years

jdiep78 2 years ago
All you idiots think the Ford is a Powerstroke. It's not, it's a Navistar 6.9L or a 7.3. Older, but made alot better. Nothing wrong with Cummins though, even if they put the engine in a Dodge.
CARPEATBREAD 2 years ago
Thank you! Finally someone knows what engine their talking about, very true indeed the Ford has a International Diesel, I can't remember what International Called them, but it is most definitely not a Powerstroke, Thank you for pointing that out.
dieselgaint 2 years ago
early international 7.3 IDI motors were 444 cube with a stanadyne rotary injection pump that eat themselves alive with the ULSD fuel, the same pump GM's detroit diesel-built 6.2 and 6.5's used.. powerstrokes are the same basic design as the IDI motors but 446 cube, different heads, pistons, and direct injection with electronic injectors located under the valve covers. all 446's are turbos, only a few IDI 444's got factory turbos, ATS and banks made numerous aftermarket kits for them though.
scramblinshambles 2 years ago
@dieselgaint the 7.3 powerstroke is also international its the t444e the one in our 01 f259 has been great
roddyyy524 1 year ago
@roddyyy524 you right with engine but mine is not a t444e that series came out in 94 but only with a manual until 95, mine is a 90 and my engine came out in 1983 as a 6.9 and in 88 they made the 7.3 version of the 6.9, same internals except they had different heads and pistons I believe, the t444e or powerchoke is completely different.
dieselgaint 1 year ago
@dieselgaint my dad had a 91 idi and the only problem it had was the belts would snap every 8-10000 miles, the 7.3 powerstroke that he has now has had little problems, the biggest one so far was a thotle control and it has almost 200000 miles on it, so i wouldnt say its a bad motor but i like all three
roddyyy524 1 year ago
@CARPEATBREAD Thats how dumb you are, yes Navistar makes the engine but they brand it as a Power Stroke
BoneHerWithMyBoner 1 year ago
cummins :) thats ny opinion
mattherklotz 2 years ago
One thing that's purely a fact that can not be argued is that the Cummins Turbo Diesel motor (esp the 12 Valve) has FAR LESS moving parts than just about any Diesel or Gas motor on the market...less parts means less things can go wrong. less parts in a motor....less parts that can break. That's a Fact.
p.s. I like the comment about Ford guys putting the Cummins Motors in their trucks but you don't see any one putting a Power Stroke in a Dodge haha, Very Nice.
casualty178 2 years ago 2
@casualty178 why would anyone put a powerstroke in an ugly dodge. The cummins 5.9 is a nice engine, which is why a person would want to put it in a nice truck. ford = better axles, transmissions, and looks (interior and exterior) than dodge, so putting a cummins in a ford is a good idea. i plan on putting a 12v in mine one day.
mizzou1990 1 year ago
i think the cummins sounds better that what i like about cummins but the idi will last way longer my f250 has 373000 original miles an it runs perfect does anybody agree?
jwallker22 2 years ago 2
powerstroke was when they became computer controlled. pretty sure 94 was a 7.3 idi with a turbo but it was mechanical. im not a ford guy tho so correct me if i am wrong
caseyn720 2 years ago
ca'mon man no disrespect to your truck or nothin but who wouldnt rather be cummin than strokin lol
corvettekiller96 2 years ago
rather be strokin then walking lol

If powerstrokes are better than cummins, than why do ford owners swap out their powerstrokes for a cummins???
12VCTD 2 years ago
@12VCTD cuz they dont
kaziwill 1 year ago
You have my vote for the IDI, but just FYI for all of you, cummins is not as great as they all make them seem to be. The powerstrokes are just as good as a cummins, they are all motors, they'll all have problems, they are mechanical somthing WILL go wrong at one point. But in our experience The powerstrokes have out done the cummins trucks
2000F350powerstroke 2 years ago

builtfordguy 2 years ago
i'm not saying dodge is great. in truth i have my own ford diesel and put a 2005 cummins in it and it preforms better than it did with the powerstroke. my cummins crank 395 hp with 960flbs of torque compared to the 380 and 800flbs of torque. btw CHECK YOUR SPELLING
Spartan1990x2 2 years ago
@ Spartan1990x2 ( Well said ) : )
Anyone who loves the International Motors. say that Cummins' Motors are shit. Anyone who loves Cummins say that Internationals are shit. Then you have the people that like both. Metal is Metal, and bolts are bolts.

ya ford is so good with diesel engines having to put out a new design every couple of years because the last one fucked up
caseyn720 2 years ago
shows what you know....the changes are for emissions you asswipe.
enduroallnight 2 years ago
@caseyn720 cummins has mulitple size engines also do your homework
kaziwill 1 year ago
@kaziwill i know cummins makes different sized engines im not retarded. but they are good reliable engines unlike the fords. also if you are so in love with fords pick up the february 2011 edition of diesel power and see how the new "greatest diesel of them all"ford 6.7L does up against an engine with less power. pretty pathetic how badly it does.
caseyn720 1 year ago
Man all the old diesels sounds good other than the chevy diesels. I've owned both and got more than 700,000 miles out of both so can say witch it better. I got better milage out of the Dodge. There both great diesels. How ever I think that the Dodge sounds better due to the turbo sound. With the loud diesel and the whistle of the turbo it just sounds mean.
bigbubba357m 2 years ago
Whether you like the Dodge Cummins or not...the Cummins B Series is not a junk motor...
And the Powerchoke flutter sound is terrible
rednecksrock1 2 years ago
5.9 cummins will pull any P.O.S(ford) in circles any day. but personally i like the sound of 03 6.0 stroker they got the loudest turbos but its still a ford so its just as useful as an ashtray on a motorcyle. CTD baby!!!
crossfire600man 2 years ago
I have personally hauled more 5.9 cummins home then I can count behind my 7.3 powerstroke. All those poor KDP
all4jarrett 2 years ago
It's cause Cummins motors are strong enough to break shit. Everyone has their own opinions. Those 6.0 Diesel Engines from ford were pieces of shits : )
